The Knott has long boasted a sign declaring it the best pub in Manchester, but a glance at the small print reveals that this award refers to the Hulme and Salford area (I don't know how it got itself into that category and avoided the competition from the numerous bars of Deansgate, given that it lies about 15 steps from Deansgate station). Anyway, the Knott is not quite the best pub in Hulme and Salford, that title belongs to The New Oxford, but it is certainly a close fought battle. The Knott boasts an array of superb drinks, from wines through spirits to lagers and ales. The showpiece has to be the Ginger Ale. No, not Canada Dry, nor another incantation of these horrible alcoholic ginger beers that seem to have sprung up in recent months. This is a real ale with an authentic fresh ginger twist. The ale itself is lovely, and if ginger isn't you're thing, you can have a pint of the standard (ginger-less) version. What it does have over The New Oxford is a set of nice lagers, unusual in a bar where ale seems the main thing, and a pretty decent food menu serving a middle class take on pub food. Its location is excellent, opposite Deansgate station and right on the canal linking Oxford Road with Castlefields. This makes it an excellent place to include on a pub crawl route encompassing Dukes 92 and Cask (avoid Atlas Bar opposite!). It has a nice heated roof terrace and a decent décor, the best bits of which include some old wartime posters and retro music posters. The Knott is one of the few places that strikes the right balance of both busyness and noise levels. We all know there's nothing more annoying than a bar where you can neither dance nor hear yourself think. And I'm not the biggest fan of a strange tendency of bars to play loud trance music with only three elderly men present to enjoy its beatz. No such criticism can be made The Knott though, which boats excellent music played at the right decibel level and an uncanny capacity to avoid ever being too busy whilst never being empty. Pay it a visit (and at least £3.50 if you want a drink)!

Probably more aptly titled under its previous guise of Nowhere bar, Knott bar is seemingly the forgotten man of Deansgate. For the life of me I can't imagine why as with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, lots of cosy corners, a fantastic roof terrace, a well pieced together jukebox songlist and an affordable pint it is probably one of the better bars around town. But I do have to admitt that like everyone else, I do always tend to forget it's even there. Perhaps it is it's Chester Rd end location or the fact that it is nestled so comfortably into the stone of the railway arch, or the fact that is coloured in a tasteful and non-attention seeking olive green that renders this place virtually invisible to the man who isn't really looking, I just don't know. What I do know is that I'm going to make a concerted effort to turn up more often from now on!

I love The Knott. I have done since the first time I went in there. They've won awards from CAMRA and feature regularly in the Good Pub Guide, and it's easy enough to see why. With around 8 or so rotating casks accompanied by a beautiful range of bottled beers, you might have a hard time picking your poison - but that's part of what I like about The Knott. Whatever beer you like or takes your fancy, you'll probably be able to sate your craving here. On my most recent visit, though, I got chance to check out the food offering. I'm not sure how I never noticed it before, but I've been frequenting The Knott oblivious to their kitchen for ages now. I ordered the steak sandwich, which from the menu said it came on a sesame bun (i.e. a burger bun) but that was not a problem. The steak was sliced, alongside onions and mushrooms, on the bun with some green leafy salad and a horseradish mayo type sauce. Despite being sliced thinly, there was still a glimmer of pink in the steak - points for that. It was also so tender, you barely needed to chew it. Brilliant snack. I ordered a side of the spiced wedges alongside the sandwich, which were actually spicy. Not blow your head off, but enough to give you a bit of a warm glow at the back of your throat. Beer wise, I was fairly unadventurous: BrewDog Punk IPA, Beavertown Neck Oil and Magic Rock Salty Kiss. The latter was a new one on me, but I liked it. I've got a bit of a thing for sour beers at the moment, which isn't quite the right description for Salty Kiss but it's kind of similar. The interior is the same as it's been as far as I can recall; dark wood everywhere, exposed metalwork from the structure, and dim lighting that's not overpowering. One of my favourites, and definitely worth a visit. I'd recommend the steak sandwich!

What a pub! Left the rather weak-tasting Wren's nest at The Briton's Protection down the road, and used Qype Radar to find somewhere decent that was doing food. And my oh my, did we hit the jackpot here. No less than 5 delicious ales, including Marble Ginger, and Millstone (hop heaven!), and very probably the best burger I have ever eaten in my life. Everything else about the place is great, nice tables, cool posters (including an old-skool Stone Roses one), lovely staff, etc etc. We came in at 1700, and left at 0100. I literally cannot wait to go back!

The Knott is always a consistently good choice if you're looking for a good quality beer, meal and general surroundings for a chin wag - unfortunately with it being situated the polar opposite side of Manchester city centre to Piccadilly station (and my laziness) it means I don't get here that often. Saying that - it never ever changes and I mean that - in the 8 or so years I've been going here so it's great to know it will always be there. Loads of quality craft on tap, bottles and cans - plus very tasty good quality food makes it a winner!

The Knott is a simply decorated well laid out pub that stocks a range of local cask ales and beers from various continents. The Knott is a great place for a quietish drink in the week and a busy one at weekends. They also have a jukebox and provide terrace seating ideal on sunny hot summer day.

An odd little fellow perched on the entrance to both Castlefield and Deansgate. It's almost as it got lost on the way to the Northern Quarter or Chorlton and really for the area it's a bit of a gem. Several reasons: Fantastic range of ales (take that Deansgate Locks); very welcoming staff (i.e. they actually start a conversation with you rather than silently awaiting the insertion of your maestro card into the their cash slots); generally good crowd; fantastic terrace with superb views (eyeing up the length of the nearby Beetham Tower); superb jukebox (none of that 'clothes shop house music' played here); wonderful, if DIY, décor. Haven't as yet tried the food so I cannot comment. Knott is always on my lists of bars to takes pals on excursions to Manchester.

The menu was pretty standard, so I quickly have chosen what to have and went to take a seat. The breakfast was of the right temperature, no twists, does the job. The wait was a bit too long - but again, this is a pub, not a breakfast place, so not sure it's fair to expect fast service at this time of day.

Although it's traditional and there's nothing that makes you go wow like some nearby trendy bars, it's definitely this which appeals to me - in fact I found a lovely little table towards the back with a roaring fire which warmed me up on a day when the weather was starting to look rather autumnal. I was served by 3 different staff and all were friendly, polite and welcoming. For some bizarre reason I decided to go for their 2 for £12.95 lunch deal (why I needed 2 courses at lunch I'm not sure but it seemed good value - plus I'd been in meetings all day so needed a fair amount of comfort food) and I went for the ham hock terrine to start with (lovely piccalilli) followed by the steak and ale pie with chips and vege's (devine). The quality and taste was excellent and with a very full belly I felt my work here was done! Speaking of work, it was also a good little spot to work for an hour on my laptop afterwards - with free wifi. That's the right way to blend tradition and modern so as the customer has the best of both worlds :-)

Located in a part of the city that is clearly on the up (just off St Peters Square) it's a traditional boozer of the very old school variety - deceptively sized with a tiny front bar but loads of seating in the back! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! City Arms is somewhere that's cool to pop into if you're after a quick pint or meeting with friends, I just can't see myself wanting to spend all night here - I think I'd get very bored, very quickly of the beers on offer - but this is my own overly pretentious beery opinion!
