A couple of old guys will be playing bowls on the extensive bowling green, and they'll be staff from Christie's having a well earned break! The food menu is fairly broad, and about what you'd expect for typical pub food. Good food, at a not-too-pricey level. You could actually make everyday Sunday, and have a roast carvery if you wanted to! If you love roast potatoes (as I do) then this is the best way to make sure you get enough :) Today I couldn't resist the lite bite that they'd called pie! Served with chips still, it was a fairly normal sized pie, and just the job. (Imagine how big the normal pie is? :O ) I ate with someone who had nachos for one, and as the portion size was fairly big I got to steal a few as well. Really is nice with all this great we're having to sit out in the sun at lunch, and have a proper break. I'm happy that I only live a couple of minutes away. Was also happy that when my phone got to boiling temperature there was umbrellas to sit under. I'm not a football fan, so it's great to along out of the season for me. In season, in the evening I would expect that most evenings there's football. So I tend not to go as much then. If you're a fan then it'll be a treat for you. In summary. Traditional pub. Great in the sun.

I opted for the a chicken burger with fries whilst my mum went for mini fish and chips which looked lovely. My burger was a buttermilk chicken burger with thai mayo and monetary jack cheese along with the usual burger salad. Pure fitness!! Lots of cheese just how I like it. Enjoyable visit all round. As its the Euros the pub is temporarily called the three lions lol

If one of those cool, quirky bars in the Northern Quarter and a down-to-earth, tatty geek of a…read morestudent bar on Oxford Road were to have their eyes meet across a crowded dancefloor, The Ram & Shackle would be the resultant one-night-stand lovechild. Or rather, fraternal twins. Yes, this is a bar of two halves, two very different halves, and they could well be two separate establishments to the naked eye. Last night when a group of us came for a drink here, we realised that these halves seem to split opinion... the locals prefer one, the students the other. One half is a little colder and more austere, with on-screen sports and ramshackle tables. Oh! I just felt like Phoebe from Friends with her Central Park/Central Perk revelation. This is where the older crowd tends to gather with pints. The other half is warmer and home to some thumping beats and lends itself well to student nights out. In the middle of all of this is a bar, with some cheap house ales and spirits, but overall what you'd find at most bars - big brand drinks. No imported unusual bits and bobs, but hey, if it sells Crabbie's it's fine by me. This place has something of a spooky effect upon its clientele. What starts as a social drink can turn into a spontaneous belly-laugh of a tipsy night out (no wonder it's so popular with students!)... we're not sure how this happens, but the round of Jagermeisters spoke for itself. Hey, medicinal purposes you understand. Down the road from Indigo, Solomon's and Fuel and within staggering distance of my new apartment, I can easily see a few more visits happening.

However, I haven't visited this place for years, and was looking forward to going on a Saturday for a mates birthdays. There were 16 of us on a Saturday afternoon, starting here for food and drink before heading to a few other places in Didsbury. It's actually a really nice place - the interior is lovely and location spot on. It often gets scrutinised for being a bit pretentious with the crowd it attracts, but I have to say I prefer the crowd of didsbury locals - this place is always filled with a nice crowd and attracts no trouble. You can sit outside under the heated area, inside at the main bar, or in the restaurant/dining bit. Each area is always busy, with a bustling atmosphere and traditional decor. I ordered the Butternut Squash Risotto for my dinner which was the wrong choice - I should have gone for the burgers which a lot of my friends went for, and they looked amazing. The burgers came with a nice looking ciabatta bun, and were fully stacked with meat, salad and cheese. My risotto was very standard., The butternut squash was a little bit hard, and I didn't really feel full or satisfied after it. At least I had buckets of sweet potato fries to pick at from everyone elses order afterwards, which were home cooked and delicious! Quite a pricey place to come for lunch and a drink if you expect it to be a typical 'pub/bar' type place. But it is west didsbury after all. I'll be back to give the menu a second chance with a competely different order!

The food here isn't half bad, and on Sundays they do a heartwarming roast. They often show the latest sports on their big screens, but if that's not your thing then there's always pool. What I like most about this pub though, is it seems to be unaffected by Didsbury's prices and occasional pretense. It's cheap, cheerful and down to earth.
