On a snowy Tuesday evening in January and with the aid of our trusty Sat-Nav, we went in search of…read morethe Cock Inn, a place reputed to serve great homemade food. The car park is in the front of what is a fairly large pub, courtesy of its large dining room extension in 2000. Having negotiated some fairly narrow roads to get there, it was good to get inside the warm cosy surroundings and peruse the menu. The bar area of the Cock Inn was packed with locals and the bar itself had a wide range of drinks on offer, sadly driving, I had to stick to coke. The dining room was large with a variety of seating, tables in the window, to make the most of what I suspect is a tremendous view, large tables in the centre for groups and cosier tables for couples. The beamed ceiling awash with what looked like Christmas tree lights, and even trees that appeared to be coming out of the floor, decked with the same lights and the occasional Robin. Sounds strange, but it really did work, the feeling of a calm relaxing environment was great after a day's work. Menu wise, not huge, just right, we skipped the starters and went straight for the main courses, a good variety around the £10-11 mark, like gammon, various different pies, cod and other slightly more expensive dishes like rump of lamb and steak. I went for the fish pie, clearly homemade, a large portion packed with fish (cod, salmon etc), perfectly cooked in a creamy but not overpowering sauce topped with mash potato and a sprinkle of cheese, comfort food personified! My wife had the steak and ale pie, packed with filling, gravy and a thin pastry top, so good. The accompanying peas, carrots, new potatoes and cabbage were the perfect sides. Probably full enough to stop, we ventured to have a dessert, because we were so enjoying the food and the ambience so much. Classics like a cheese board, sticky toffee pudding were on offer, but I had the chocolate fudge cake, with ice cream, slightly disappointing, could have done with being a little more chocolatey. My wife had the homemade apple, date and ginger crumble; an unbelievably good crumble, arguably the stand out dish of the night, I was lucky enough to be able to finish it off, so often desserts flatter to deceive, its nice when a dessert lives up to its billing. On the completion of our meal, we immediately booked in for Sunday lunch in few weeks time, we were very impressed!

The food is wonderful, very high quality, and depending on what time you eat, very good value. The lunchtime menu is very good (it includes most of the the same things as on the main menu), but the meals are cheaper, althouh they dont seem to have any less food on the plate! You can happily leave Wilbrahams Arms at dinner time stuffed from a 2 course lunch having spent less than £6 which i think is fantasti. The staff are all welcoming, friendly, and the service is quick, and i've never been served the wrong thing. Because it is away from some of the other pubs in the town, i find this is a nice pupb to go to for a meal and a drnk for a special occasion, rather than just because you are already out. There are a lot of picnic benches outside and the garden is large so you can easily sit outside ithout being disturbed by anyone else sat around you.

Good range of beers, ales, etc. Lots of tables to sit at near the bar, or in the extension/conservatory. Gets busy at weekends, so always best to book a table. Weekly music provided by Willies Jazz band. Toilets are always extremely warm, due to central heating pipes running directly though. Also there always seems to be a disinfectant smell as you walk in the entrance, due to the toilets being right next the the entrance. Clean and tidy toilets though!

It is set off the cobbles in the town centre and it does have steps up to both doors so access isn't fantastic. The local restaurant Cafe Symphony has recently taken over the food side of things and this has meant a significant improvement! The food is great and choice is wide. They've even got themselves a decent coffee machine making it a pleasant stop for a lunch time coffee and bite to eat. The toilets are very clean and there is a baby change facility a nice surprise for a pub!

Now the bad stuff - the old barman was rude, sarcastic and obviously modeled his customer service on Basil Fawlty's own inimitable style! He seemed to go out of his way to be off-hand and his patronising remarks when we asked about the menu were uncalled for. We are well aware that the Black Bear has stood the test of time for hundreds of years but no pub these days can afford to rest on it's laurels (the amount of for lease/for sale boards nailed to previously thriving pubs is testament to that). It's not rocket science to greet your paying customers with a smile, not a snarl, and they will recommend you to others. This pub is old, quaint and characterful - sorry barman, you were just old, rude and in need of customer service training. If you don't like dealing with customers then stay behind the scenes and let somebody with a personality take over. The Black Bear loses a star from us for bad customer service which is a pity because the food was so good.
