After Hyde's doing the Abel Heywood in town, it's cool to see Holt's doing something similar and really moving with the times in offering a relaxed (if somewhat still faux independent looking boozer) and multi-faceted 3rd place. I had a meeting here and decided to stay on for lunch so I can comment that the coffee (9 different blends - I only had one mind you...) was pretty good, the black and blue burger was tasty (lovely chips and sides - although the pit beans were a bit off in the spicing - a bit too much star anise I think...) and it was a good place to meet and also get some work done with loads of room to move around in and fairly quiet on a Thurs lunch. Although I wasn't partaking on this visit, the beer selection on draft was a good mix of Holt's and local breweries - plus regular lagers. What I was impressed with though was the large selection of bottles from Sierra Nevada (3 types), Founders All Day IPA and other great breweries. Ok so this place is very towny and I imagine could be a haven for the 'shirt and shoes brigade' on a weekend evening but overall it had enough to make me want to keep coming back. This is a suburban Joseph Holt's pub which has recently undergone a massive renovation and is an…read moreobvious attempt by Holt's to capture a different market. Gone is any mention of Holt's on signage and the whole look is trying to convince you it's an independent free hold. Even the Holt's branded pump clips are absent at the bar replaced with little chalk written clips. Overall this re 'un-branding' works and the pub was very busy though big enough to be full of people but still not rammed. Small touches linked the place to it's location right next to a train line, with signage alluding to a train station and concrete rail sleepers used as fencing in the beer garden. The beer was Holt's fairly unremarkable standard, though still far superior to most pubs normal selection of lagers, they had one guest beer on which was a pleasant pale but not amazing enough to have held it's name in my memory. The big selling point of this new refurbishment is the restaurant. You can tell a lot of money and thought had been placed into the new gastro focus. The place has been re done pretty much like most places you'll find in the Northern Quarter with lots of wood panelling and mis-matched chairs and edison style light bulbs. The dessert bar was the most impressive I've seen in any restaurant for a long time. A full ice cream bar on display as well as their huge selection of 5 inch deep cheesecakes. The menu was extremely varied but had a focus on the new trend in American style street food dining with pulled pork and hot dogs amid a selection of more standard choices like pizza or fish and chips. Everyone's food looked amazing and there was a general consenus that nothing served was sub par. My pulled pork hash was great, served with a mustard apple sauce and poached egg were spot on choices and a side of dirty beans which seemed to come with everything which they were calling P5 Pit Beans. Overall it's a local gastro pub done very well by a local chain which has been very underwhelming in recent years. But they are clearly trying to overhaul their image in selected locations around the city. I can only hope this happens in more of their locations and it was a very welcome change.

So whipping out yelp..We tried a nearby pub which was packed..in defeat and stomachs a-gurgling I rang this place and spoke to a John who was polite and promised us a table.. Eagerly we arrived to a lovely traditional pub with a fire and good vibes. We were led to a lovely dining room and seated. Looking around at fellow diners eating Yorkshire puddings the size of a large boat we were encouraged. They offer lamb, beef turkey or all three meats for 14.99. I chose the lamb Sunday dinner with mash, green beans, red cabbage, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and a massive home made Yorkshire. There was little bit of a wait but God when it arrived it was one of the best Sunday dinners I have had in a very long time. The portion was generous and we even got cheese cauliflower for the side. We ate in utter silence and every single thing on that plate was cooked to perfection. These wolfed down we ended with a cheesecake each which was also divine and a decent portion. We chose the pub sharing platter to start between 4.5 of us (our 2 year old daughter has a great appetite...) which consisted of some great fresh pork pies, sausages, scratchings, bread etc - and then followed this with some tasty roasts (mixed pork and beef really hit the spot) - with all the trimmings - lovely veg and of course those ace Yorkshires (check out my pics) Dessert was tasty with a great selection - Eton Mess and Choc Brownie were awesome. We weren't drinking for various reasons but they did have a fairly decent selection of traditional ales and wines. The soft drink selection was great too - Fentimans all round for us. A lovely country inn, great food, drinks and surroundings - can't wait to go back!

Situated just across the road from Mersey square and tucked in behind one of the main railway arches, it's a hidden gem that is perfect for starting the night before heading up to the Magnet and Hope on the A6. Lots of quaint little rooms with plenty of seating for large groups, the atmosphere is relaxed and unthreatening with a classic decor throughout. I didn't make it in to it but my friends I was meeting were in the beer garden out back beforehand which is a nice additional touch. The beers are all from decent UK and fairly local breweries with around 12 on tap and a couple of ciders. Prices are super low and the beer is excellent - what's not to like!

The hostess corrected that quickly, but it is a bit disruptive to the overall meal flow. Location is beautifully quaint tucked away inside of a forest Glen and brings about a very peaceful experience. Decor reminds you of visiting a small cottage. If you don't mind the occasional flaws, which are immediately corrected dining here could be a wonderful experience at a very unique establishment.

There was a good range of beers on offer, some nice bottles and there seemed a great environment of banter and middle aged folks catching up. Staff were also very friendly. The Brook nowadays has two Landlords well I presume they both class themselves as the Landlords but anyways, and they have certainly improved the brooks atmosphere from where it was with the previous occupant. They've brought in live music like most places do nowadays on a saturday night, and currently dabble in a Comedy club night every couple of months in the function room upstairs While it is not back to the haydays of many years ago it certainly does seem to be doing better. They do have a lot more TV's now though some are cleverly hidden behind traditional looking pictures and only come out when sports are on. The Beer is ok, though they have no bitter which seems odd, and if you ask for a pint of bitter you get a pint of Greene King IPA, which is a nice drink and a bitter it is not. They brought in a new rule when they arrived that children had to stick to the wings of the pub, I'm not really fussed where kids are in the pub as long as their quiet but from speaking to other locals apparently some people didn't like the idea of kids being in there at all, so hidden away in the wings seemed a good compromise I guess. The Brook does offer one important thing to Bramhall though, it's now (if geography serves me faithfully) the only Pub in Bramhall now, everywhere else having been turned into some form of Wine Bar, bar/restaurant combo. There are plenty of tables and friendly staff. The bar is obviously used by regulars, but they are friendly and you are not given the impression that you are not wanted there. The best thing about the Hesketh is the food on a Sunday!! I have only ever visited on a Sunday so I'm not sure what food they do on other days of the week, but on a Sunday you will find a carvery restaurant. There is usually a choice of about four different meats, and if you like your welcome to have a slice of each!! You then serve yourself with vegetables and potatoes. The food is of a great quality and it is always hot and very tasty!! The price for a Sunday carvery is around £8-£9 each. The pub/restaurant itself is lovely to sit in, especially in the winter with the fires going.
