We decided to go with the large one so we could have a bigger selection of meats, and it was all succulent. The chicken was absolutely wonderful, as were the beef and pork. The sides of cheesy cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes and such were spot on. And the Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball and gravy were so yummy. Excellent friendly service here too! I'd love to come back for a Sunday roast!

Staff is almost always friendly when they hear my accent (American) so I can't tell if service was great because of my accent or because it was just that good. I was in a party of 4. I ordered a cider which came quickly and chilled. Others ordered juice and water. A child in the group had a fun little meal ordered and a juice. The 3 adults went up for the carvery. Although there weren't many veg options, I was pleasantly surprised with the offerings. Yorkshire pudding is what I crave most in the States and this one was lovely. Had my first gammon here, too! Yummy! I am partial to cranberry and although there wasn't a heaping pile of it, there was enough available for my liking. The child ordered a personal pizza and that suited him. Didn't order pudding but should have! Another table ordered some and it looked wonderful! Next time!!!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they're making up these monikers in band meetings. Did you know that tribute bands make a heck of a lot of money? I have a lot of musician friends, one of whom packs away shedloads drumming for a Status Quo copy. You'd be surprised, but people absolutely love bands that try to look like and/or play the songs of other people. Is there a Meat Loaf tribute in the UK called Malt Loaf? Please let there be. In fact I'm Googling it. YES! http://www.myspace.com/maltloaftribute How truly fantabulous. I'm veering off the point slightly. Let me gather my thoughts. I've seen a few in my time, but my favourite FAVOURITE act at the Witchwood (apart from the support band I was actually there to see) was Ironically Maiden. Once I'd finished giggling myself into my Southern Comfort it was a definite bonus to watch them. I think part of the fun of tribute bands is that they're very tongue-in-cheek, so there's a comedy element to some of the performances... well, certainly in Ironically Maiden's case, that much is for sure. Leather pants and huge onstage mascots aside, the Witchwood is a great little pub in the centre of Ashton. It's perfect for live music and has a pleasant outdoor area. It turns into a club on a Friday night, open until 3am with free admission before 10pm AND a free bar. You're spoiling us! The drinks in general here are very reasonably priced, and it considers itself a real ale pub, so if you happen to be in the area, pop in for some entertaining music. You won't regret it.

Entry was (and apparently still is) free and the DJ, Tom Smith (still there, I checked!) was really fun! The Witchwood is a wonderful live music venue, too. Although it's a pretty small place, there's a good sized stage, which has seen loads of touring, tribute and local bands play over the years. It's a particularly good place to catch old punk bands there always seems to be at least one scheduled to play here! UK Subs are lined up at the moment. If you prefer something a little quieter than a gig or clubnight, there's also a separate bar at the front of the building, which has some great real ales. It's a lot calmer than the chaos of the backroom and you get a really interesting mix of people going in. Like most of the people who work here, all the bar staff are lovely, and the booze is very reasonably priced.

They have tables reserved for diners only which, is a nice touch, and we were shown to one quickly by the staff. You order your food at the bar and it came very quickly. Certainly welcome when on your lunch hour! I ordered a seafood salad and my friend went for the summer chicken salad. A strange name for a garlic chicken and bacon salad especially in January! The food was really good... lots of the freshest salad with a homemade coleslaw. My seafood option consisted of some scampi, fresh prawns and tuna mayo with a seafood sauce on the side. This sounded like such a weird combination but it actually really hit the spot! My friend's summer chicken salad was just as fresh with 'real' bacon and chicken. Not the horrid processed stuff you find on similar salads at some of the pub chains. The staff were attentive bringing us extra coleslaw and mayo, nothing was too much trouble and we were bid a friendly goodbye when we left. A complete surprise and something I wasn't expecting in the middle of Ashton town centre! I'll be back soon...

Now they looked more like wine bars, obviously geared for younger clientele in the evenings. I can be quite comfortable in this kind of establishment but none sold cask beer. Every pub advised me to go to Weatherspoons. On my was back to my tram, by then I was spitting feathers, I saw The Caladonia. What a brilliant find! Real, good ale. Folks of every age in, which is the sign of a good pub. There were plenty of diners in and I ordered food which was excellent. The staff were extremely friendly and wished me well when I left. I will certainly be going back again. I have a lot of overseas visitors and they love to go in a typical English pub, few and far between these days but I will definitely be taking them into The Calidinia.

There's no atmosphere and there's no wow factor of an amazing aroma as soon as you walk in! For the price you pay, you could go to one of manchesters top restaurants for not much more! Another thing is the desserts.. Everyone has been going on about the cakes and ice cream there for weeks! They have them all lined up in a cabinet so of course, you have a look and see toffee ice cream with actual tofifees in it! 'Wow!' And bubblegum ice cream with real balls of bubblegum in it! 'Ever better!' So you order them both and just get a plain scoop of ice cream from a tub which is nothing like what they show you! and for £1.80 a scoop! WHAT?! I could have bought the whole tub you just got that one scoop from!!! So overall, I won't be returning! And as I can recall, I wasn't the only one unimpressed as there was a lady behind me complaining that she had found hairs in her food, not that they wanted to do much about it and just replied with 'the kitchen staff wear hats!' Brilliant customer service you have! (Not!)
