The £12 veggie burger (minced mushroom) was very good and also generously portioned and cake with sweet potato chips and coleslaw. For s busy Sunday, service was very quick and friendly. I stayed here over the course of 2 weeks on business. During my stay I have a walk around the area and I found many jobless youth standing outside the nearby Job Centre in the day and homeless people roaming the streets in the night. Premier Inn hotels pride themselves with guaranteeing quality sleep. This by offering comfy beds and quality sound isolation. The beds were comfortable. Nevertheless, the sound isolation wasn't up to the standard of the rest of Premier Inn hotels that I stayed in previously. Traffic noise, especially buses, found its way to leak into the rooms and Exhaust fans were noisy. Also, you could here footsteps coming from the corridor. This will be problematic if your neighbouring guests were party animals. The staff were cheerful and respectful. They didn't hesitate to offer help. I parked my hire car in the NCP car park to the rear of the hotel at a 50% discounted rate for being an Premier Inn guest. I enjoyed my stay in this Premier Inn. I hope they can upgrade the noise isolation. I recommend it for business guests who would like to have a place to do work in the area.

But, as I've mentioned numerous times in previous reviews, Thomas street on a late Saturday night has begun (unfortunately) to resemble (much like somewhere like Printworks or Deansgate locks) a George Romero film from the 70's. That's exactly how we felt driving through it on our way to Abel. Now Turner street on the other hand has always been my favourite. It's that street in the George Romero film the Zombies haven't discovered yet. So we quietly parked there and tiptoed into the Abel avoiding attention of the Thomas street crowd. And wow, what an oasis. Calming music plentiful booths and comfy couches to sit on and timely bar service with friendly staff. The drinks range I've been told is fairly decent and there's a restaurant and a boutique hotel on the first and second floor respectively. Most of all the chilled out vibe on a saturday night was a clear winner. The seating booths are super comfy with heaters lined in between, which is likely to be a God send in the upcoming winter chill.

Fair enough -- it was late on a Saturday night. Next up, "Hummus, Pesto & Bread." Simple enough, right? After a 35-minute wait, our food arrived: two sad pieces of bread and a ramekin of watery, orange-coloured hummus. I asked where the pesto was, and the young server confidently said, "It's under the hummus." She went to fetch cutlery, and when I checked -- of course, there was no pesto. When she came back, I asked again, and she replied, completely blasé, "We haven't got any." I pointed out she'd just told me it was under the hummus, and she just shrugged and walked off. Why lie? As for the hummus itself -- it was an abomination. Orange, watery, and utterly tasteless. Hummus should be made from chickpeas, garlic, olive oil, and a bit of seasoning. This was none of those things. So effectively, our "snack" was two pieces of bread. When I raised it with the barman, he said he'd pass it on to the kitchen. An hour later, the kitchen staff packed up and left. I asked again -- still no apology, no offer to put it right, just another shrug. For what they charge, the quality and service are a complete disgrace. My friend's wife and daughter came out of the restaurant later on with similar complaints -- apparently their meals weren't much better. I won't be going back, and I'd strongly suggest anyone thinking of eating here to look elsewhere. There are plenty of pubs that actually care about their food and their customers. Sadly, this isn't one of them.

The rooms are clean and comfortable with good televisions and shower etc. We had a room overlooking the street and it had a bit of road noise so I suggest that you ask for a room facing the other if you want a quiet night. Breakfast was absolutely awesome - with a great choice of hot dishes which were very well prepared - kippers, salmon and scrambled egg, omelette, eggs benedict as well as the classic English breakfast to say just a few - much better than I get in Hilton's or Marriotts etc!! recommend!

I was told by reception on check out that the company 'Brilliant Hotels' have only just taken on the Staindrop Lodge and the pandemic has a terrible effect on the hospitality service. I appreciate these are challenges BUT the hotel SHOULD NOT be open to the public & taking bookings in its current state. Visiting Sheffield for the university open day. I booked Staindrop Lodge having read the reviews online, without taking into account the date of the reviews. Turns out they are very out-of-date. Since the hotel changed hands the older reviews definetely no longer apply! Neither does the AA 3+stars, in fact the hotel is no longer listed on the AA website. I was the only adult with 3 childern, 4+ hours from home. If I could have moved to another hotel I would have done! But despite constant checking through out our stay the nearest availablilty was in Leeds. Our visit:- We arrived late Friday evening. There were parking spaces in the car park but there was also a very large overspilling skip. I was surprised at check-in, Covid QR code display, no symptom check list or any mention of covid at all. We went to my daughter's room first, on the stairs outside the room door was a pile of dirty towels, crockery and used face mask. Inside the room, it was very warm/airless & stuffy. The toilet had a skid mark in the bowl and only one towel for two people staying two nights. Mine & my son's room was the other end of the hotel and very grubby. The overwhelming mildew smell from the bathroom (the extractor fan did not work). The kettle had water in it that was black & mouldy. In the wardrobe was balled up pair of used trousers that also contained a used pair of underpants & socks. The carpet was heavily stained and very dirty, used ear plugs around the bed. Ther toilet seat was only attcahed by one hinge, so slipped around if sat on. The cold water pressure tap barely dribbled out. The shower lever was very tempermental, so we had to keep pulling it to get the water to come out of the shower head. We also only had one towel (grey & smelly too). In both rooms the TV and kettles were lasted PAT tested in 2018. During our stay of three days I did not see any staff cleaning the rooms and/or public areas. Other than a box of disposable face masks and a tub of hand gel there was no consideration for covid safety. Yes I complained as did many other customers and continued to look for aleternative hotels in the area. We booked through Booking.com and paid at time of booking (£345). When I checked out there was finally someone on reception that looked as if he may be able to help - he did not. Other than repeat the hotel had just been taken over and they are planning a refurbishment, he just listened to my list of issues but said he was not authroised to make any refund as the booking was through Booking.com. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!! I now read that the hotel was leased by the local authority during the height of the pandemic to house homeless people. This would have been over a year ago and the hotel shows no signs of being cleaned in anyway since. The hotel cancelled our booking after we returned home so I can not leave a review on Booking.com. Wow just WOW!!!!
