Sat outside 10-15 minutes without another employee interacting (unless you count the server who looked the other way while walking by us). So we went to El Toreo up the street and spent our money. The Crazy Cucumber is a place I visit whenever I'm in town to visit family. The manager greeted us and made sure our server arrived promptly. Service was fast and accurate. I had the blackened chicken pasta which did not disappoint. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and the pasta was the right firmness. Drinks were good as well. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. For an enjoyable casual meal, I'd recommend giving The Crazy Cucumber a shot. read more

I was excited for our first Restaurant Week and Crazy Cucumber was one of the restaurants to participate in it. Unfortunately it seems they forgot all about it. When I sat myself at a table I noticed the two menus in front of me and perused them but saw no mention of any specials. The same for the indoor chalkboard. My waitress also had no idea what I was talking about. The manager? Clueless also. It only makes sense then that the cook too was out of the loop. Some time had passed and I was beyond frustrated. The waitress promised me just a couple of minutes. The solution? The cook, on the fly, was going to make a version of a dish for a particular price. It was unappealing and I just left. Stopped in for the first time for a business lunch today and got seated right away by attentive staff. But the menus were so filthy and gross neither of us could touch them--good thing they are just one page. What are they thinking? If the menu is gross, I want to see the kitchen! The dining room seemed clean, but those menus put us on edge. Ordered clam chowder which was cute, interesting and pretty decent. The side salads tasted a bit like weeds and had really undercooked poached eggs on them (a bit scarey). Finished with blackened tuna sandwiches that seemed properly cooked and nicely plated. Crazy Cucumber is a new restaurant in Ocala that has apparently become hotly popular. I can see at least part of the reason why: it is located in an outdoor mall area off Highway 200, has a full bar, has enough TVs to function as a sports bar, it's brand-new and its furnishings likewise are brand-new, so yeah, it will attract a crowd at least until something similar to it yet even newer pops up. I think however it could become a very popular neighborhood spot for the middle-aged middle-class client base it obviously hopes to attract: Overall, it has the formula down pretty well with classic American food, a variety of house drink specials, indoor and outdoor seating and just the type of environment that works for this approach. The interior is bright and clean, spacious, and works well for groups plus has a long and inviting bar which also has an outside area opening to some of the outside seating. The other section of outside seating however is cloistered away to the front left side of the restaurant and isn't as large nor as nice. The outside tables seem a bit cheap but pragmatic, I suppose. The staff is young, attentive, and overall seems pretty adept. Now on to food and drink: this is where things are ok but could be better. I had a whiskey-based drink called Doctor's Orders which I think also contained some vermouth and tasted just as bitter and medicinal as one would expect by its name--in mostly a good way though, if that makes any sense. Most of their house special drinks are reasonable in price, too. Then I had their Chicken Cobb Salad. The salad was overall very tasty--most ingredients were very fresh, the dressing was good, and it had roasted, spiced nuts which were a nice touch. However, the whole salad was too small for a main course and it contained very little chicken and what it did contain was substandard cuts of dark meat. There is nothing wrong with dark meat, but you could easily order a chicken salad at Zaxby's and it would contain more and probably better meat. I wasn't impressed with this. The pricing on most menu items for dinner, unlike the very reasonable cocktails, seems steep, too. I would probably return if friends wanted to, but overall I felt this is yet another case of a restaurant plying its trade in a way that may turn a profit but doesn't demonstrate any impressive dedication to going above and beyond on any level. read more

I travel for work, and it's not always easy to find a place that is consistently good. This is one of my faves. BEWARE 20% gratuity is added in ALL receipts!!! Doesn't matter if you spent $10 or $200, there will already be a tip included and added into your total. The service wasn't great, had to wait an hour and a half for our food and the food wasn't even that great. I got the Mahi tacos and the fish was drier than the Sahara. The drinks took forever and the waitress would often ask me if I would want another and then forget that I placed another order for a drink from the bar. We were there from 5:30pm-8:15pm and left 20 minutes after getting our food. Definitely did not deserve 20% added onto my bill, so I definitely will not be eating here again. read more
