Centro is the brand new SU bar at UWIC's Cyncoed campus. Anyone who ever visited the previous bar,…read moreTaffy's, will be pleased to know that Centro is bigger and you don't have to run from the main building in the rain to get to it. It also doesn't have that weird smell that Taffy's had. However, I have to admit that I kind of miss Taffy's. Taffy's had big, comfy, leather sofas, was split into a couple of different sections, and there was hardly ever anyone in there. In comparison, Centro is all hard uncomfortable seats, stools that are the wrong height for the tables they're meant to be for, and there's not a single sofa to catch a cheeky nap on between lectures. Comparisons to Taffy's aside though, Centro isn't that bad. The downstairs section with its bright, stripy seats and pool tables is funky, and there are quite a few different seating areas to choose from. The upstairs part does resemble a cafeteria a little bit, with its hard pine tables and chairs and bright lighting, but then it is the cafe bit, so I can't complain too much. The food and drink is pretty much the same as before, only it all looks a lot classier now. There are sandwiches and chips and things, and general consensus is that it's loads better than the canteen. One thing I really do hate is the toilets. These toilets remind me of public toilets that drug addicts hang out in. While the toilets at Taffy's had one or two toilet seats ripped of, these horrible stainless steal things don't even have toilet seats. If you're in there during the day, I would definitely recommend going to the other toilets (that are really very close) and not venturing into the ones that Centro provides.

But we found the food and staff great, and it was good value. Our three courses came to just over £32 a head, including service and drinks: whitebait and a bruschetta (very generously smothered with tomato and garlic) to start; Pizza San Guiseppe (mushrooms, ham, tomato and mozzarella) and Penne Primavera (tomato, garlic, peppers, aubergine, courgette and olives) for mains, and for dessert a Panna Cotta with caramel, and a "Gusto D'Italia" ice cream sundae with cherry ice cream, whipped cream, amaretti and flaked almonds. All were freshly cooked/made and very tasty. Service was efficient and friendly. Somewhere we'd happily return to.

Restaurant is priced well and is ok given natural market around them. We had an overall pleasant experience and food was fresh and prepared with some care. Food is typical Italian American or Italian British cuisine- an interpretation of Italian dishes anglosaxonized to local pallet. Not bad, but not what I rate a 4+. I'd have to lower or change my expectations to return, but have to be fair in that they served us with little fuss. It is decent and definitely recommended given all choices surrounding them.

We did eventually get our food. The wetherspoons was nicely decorated and the atmosphere was good they had a quiet zone where people was using laptops. It's just like any other wetherspoons the food was hot. I would have rated more but where the food took ages to arrive I only rated it 3 stars.

This was a welcome lunch stop after seeing Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral on a sunny summer day, and a nice place for restorative drink and sustenance. Also, an ideal spot to try some traditional pub dishes - one of my daughters tried the bangers and mash; another had the fish and chips (not all of us went with pub grub - my eldest daughter had a good ole American cheeseburger while my wife had some new-agey quinoa salad and stuff. Well, one does try at least). The bangers and mash was generous with plenty of gravy, tasty and juicy sausages; the fish and chips comprised of a nice piece of haddock, crisply fried, and surprisingly good mushy peas which tasted much better than it sounded. Oh, and the drinks were good too!
