Very disappointed. I only went for a short period of time (the museum closes at 5pm), but I think that this was enough to get a general picture. The galleries were small, crowded and cluttered, and it was as if as soon as you went in, they were throwing information at you. I didn't know what to look at first and, although the exhibits were interesting, the way they were presented put me off before I even had a chance to see them. There was a beautiful painting in the 'Bristol People' section, and I would have loved to find out more about it (why it was there, what it was of etc...). But there was nothing: not even a card saying "We don't know where this comes from". In the Bristol museum, the exhibits were well placed and you knew what you were supposed to be learning about; in M Shed, there were different periods in history, different places and different events all jumbled together and I had no idea what to learn about. In my opinion, museums are like books: if you aren't gripped from the first page, you won't have the heart to carry on reading. M Shed put me off as soon as I walked into the first gallery.
Also, there was no variation from the placards and signs posted all around the room. I love reading, but when every single item is labelled in the same way, you start to get bored and loose interest. The sections that I saw had no films, music or audio information worth listening to and the exhibits that DID have audio did not have headphones or anything to control the noise; you just had to try and hear what was being said over the din of other people listening to them too.
Overall, I was disappointed with the result of £27,000,000. I don't think that I'll be returning in a hurry. read more
