    Dungeness crab

Little spot in Hoonah. Stopped by after a stopping on a cruise. Had the Dungeness crab, reindeer chili, and Bloody Mary. Everything was great.

I was lured in by the crabby Bloody Mary! We ordered the Salmon chowder, which was delicious and the bloody art was delicious and fun. BUT the crab leg was complete frozen. Sad :(. Also very expensive here.

Located near the cruise terminal at Icy Straight Point, we stopped here after our early morning whale watching cruise with Allen Marine. (They guarantee a whale sighting and give you $100 back if you do not see whales. We were so lucky to see mommy whales and baby whale calves swimming together). The salmon chowder was fresh, piping hot, filled with chunks of Alaskan salmon and topped with salmon bacon. It was so delicious and a perfect quick bite after our whale watching excursion. So nice to be able sit outside and enjoy a clear summer day in Alaska. TIPS: There is also free Wi-Fi here. Check out the free salmon processing museum next door. Although fishy, it is interesting.

First, there is not a lot of places to eat in this tiny town and lines are very long, and prices are expensive. Town is for cruise ships and several of the restaurants are reserved for excursion people and closed to everyone else. Waited at least and hour to order and another 30-45 minutes for our food. Hard to find a place to sit and inside the building is very stuffy and very loud. Ordered snow and Dungeness crab clusters which both were very delicious. Another in our party ordered the jambalaya but was very disappointed in it and threw it out. Salmon chowder was just ok. Very little salmon in it.

Definitely get the live Dungeness crab. So fresh and sweet.

I was not planning to eat at a place that resembled a tourist trap. However, I saw the cook cracking huge live Dungeness and I could not resist the temptation. I mean what can possibly go wrong with live fresh seafood? This turned out to be one of the best Dungeness I ever had. It wasn't seasoned with anything except maybe some fresh ocean water, steamed, and served with warm butter and a lemon wedge. I say skip the frozen snow crab and king crab and go for the fresh Dungeness.

The Crab Station is one of the few food outlet at Icy Point Strait. Of course I had crab here. They tasted ok but I found them a little pricey but they have monopoly at this location so they can charge you a higher price. Service is OK.. it was not busy at all as there was only one cruise ship in port. The food was quite fresh and great to wash that down with some local beer.

Alaskan King crab. Worth the experience
    Pat E.

Yes it is expensive! They may even run out of a certain item or it not be in season. The line may be long and you are expected to bus your own table. The lady at the counter can be "raw" but she will answer your questions. Given those minuses, it is still a big plus having fresh caught crab in Alaska along the pier. It's an EXPERIENCE. We spent $70 bucks for a cluster of KING CRAB ( 4 legs & body part) not counting the beer. They were meaty & succulent. With butter and lemon..... Over the top. Lip smacking, finger licking delicious. Think of it as a decadent snack. When in Alaska.... You just have to Indulge sometimes. You may not have the opportunity again. Glad we got the KING CRAB.

We stopped in for some drinks! It was good! If you go stop for a Bloody Mary. I tried one of the other specialty drinks too and can't remember the name but I was good too!

To us, this was the best meal of our entire cruise to Alaska, including the ones on the ship! This lovely establishment is run by a lively couple - Todd and Srisa. Todd is the fisherman who goes out to catch your crab just an hour or two in advance of your meal. Together, they prepare a wonderful meal of steamed Dungeness Crab that is the freshest ever, accompanied by servings of Thai Fried Rice for everyone in your party. Mix the chunks of crab into the rice and voila' - The best crab fried rice I've ever tasted! Both of them cook and together they come out to present each course. The dessert is a delicious homemade berry cobbler made from wild berries that Sri handpicked herself. Just WOW. C A L L A H E A D ! ! ! Their usual mode of operation seems to serve private small tour groups, but my advice is to call ahead of time to reserve your table (ideally before you board your cruise) and tell them which day you are coming into Icy Point Strait. They'll definitely save a table for you if you give them a heads-up! D I R E C T I O N S : If your cruise ship itinerary says "Icy Point Strait" as a stopover, take the little shuttle bus on the far side of the visitors center for $5 each. Or.. just walk the 1.2 miles over to the nearby town of Hoonah. Hoonah is a tiny little village filled with fishing boats and a minimum of touristy kitsch. HBH is on your way into town. The shuttle bus passes HBH on the way in, and drops you off in front of the harbor marina. Set your sights a couple of blocks back along the shoreline from the harbor and you'll find Hoonah Beach House (HBH). We would love to dine here again!

Although I wasn't a guest at the Glacier Bay Lodge, it was actually my AirB&B Host who suggested I make a reservation for dinner first thing in the morning when I arrived at the lodge. And...btw, Glacier Bay Lodge is the departure point for boat trips out on the waters of Glacier Bay. The dock area is located right in the rear of the lodge. I was fortunate enough to grab a 6:15pm reservation, though this was for one of the last weekends of the tourism season, at the end of August. Also, one more thing, lol...to explore Glacier National Park...by boat is the only way it can be navigated. The National Park Services in conjunction with the Glacier Bay Lodge offers one, 8 hour excursion from 8am - 4pm every day throughout the summer season. The website for boat tours is: https://www.visitglacierbay.com/tours/glacier-bay-day-tour/ So, it just efficiently made sense to have dinner here at the Fairweather Dining Room after finishing seeing Glacier Bay. I would also recommend to others out there to take the day boat tour and come here for dinner. Almost everyone on my tour was a familiar face eating inside the dining room afterwards. Another thing, lol, if you're not staying at Glacier Bay Lodge...then there's not many options to eat in the remote town of Gustavus. After dinner, my AirB&B Host was kind enough to pick me up at the lodge and drive me back to my cabin. Some details about this Fairweather Dining Room... - It had a cozy and rustic feel to it. There was a fireplace right nearby within the lodge. - The menu is limited to just a few options including salmon, halibut and fish and chips. There was also ribeye steak and a chicken dish. But, of course, when here on the Glacier Bay waters of the Inside Passage of Alaska...how can you not have seafood? I chose the halibut. According to the menu... "Baked Alaskan Halibut with lemon herb compound-butter, red-skinned garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed carrots and asparagus". As usual, it didn't eat heavy so I had room for dessert...a warm brownie with vanilla ice cream, drizzled caramel syrup and whipped cream (which wasn't even on the menu, but suggested by my server). Lastly, I had a decent view of the boating dock pier though the whole day was dampened by cloudy, foggy and tough conditions outside. Overall, eating here at the Fairweather Dining Room was still a rewarding way to end my visit to Glacier Bay National Park. I really liked the food, service and charming setting.
