To us, this was the best meal of our entire cruise to Alaska, including the ones on the ship! This lovely establishment is run by a lively couple - Todd and Srisa. Todd is the fisherman who goes out to catch your crab just an hour or two in advance of your meal. Together, they prepare a wonderful meal of steamed Dungeness Crab that is the freshest ever, accompanied by servings of Thai Fried Rice for everyone in your party. Mix the chunks of crab into the rice and voila' - The best crab fried rice I've ever tasted! Both of them cook and together they come out to present each course. The dessert is a delicious homemade berry cobbler made from wild berries that Sri handpicked herself. Just WOW. C A L L A H E A D ! ! ! Their usual mode of operation seems to serve private small tour groups, but my advice is to call ahead of time to reserve your table (ideally before you board your cruise) and tell them which day you are coming into Icy Point Strait. They'll definitely save a table for you if you give them a heads-up! D I R E C T I O N S : If your cruise ship itinerary says "Icy Point Strait" as a stopover, take the little shuttle bus on the far side of the visitors center for $5 each. Or.. just walk the 1.2 miles over to the nearby town of Hoonah. Hoonah is a tiny little village filled with fishing boats and a minimum of touristy kitsch. HBH is on your way into town. The shuttle bus passes HBH on the way in, and drops you off in front of the harbor marina. Set your sights a couple of blocks back along the shoreline from the harbor and you'll find Hoonah Beach House (HBH). We would love to dine here again!

My husband and I got a medium and the bisque. I heard the crab is usually caught and frozen and steamed so usually tourist season it's just rewarmed but honestly the red king crab we had wasn't chewy at all. It's chocked full of protein so even the three legs for big eaters like us and three claws plus the bisque which had plenty of crab in it as well was filling. The legs were partially cracked so for us so accessing the meat was quite easy. Honestly, all in all, a bucket list meal fulfilled.

Although I wasn't a guest at the Glacier Bay Lodge, it was actually my AirB&B Host who suggested I make a reservation for dinner first thing in the morning when I arrived at the lodge. And...btw, Glacier Bay Lodge is the departure point for boat trips out on the waters of Glacier Bay. The dock area is located right in the rear of the lodge. I was fortunate enough to grab a 6:15pm reservation, though this was for one of the last weekends of the tourism season, at the end of August. Also, one more thing, lol...to explore Glacier National Park...by boat is the only way it can be navigated. The National Park Services in conjunction with the Glacier Bay Lodge offers one, 8 hour excursion from 8am - 4pm every day throughout the summer season. Another thing, lol, if you're not staying at Glacier Bay Lodge...then there's not many options to eat in the remote town of Gustavus. After dinner, my AirB&B Host was kind enough to pick me up at the lodge and drive me back to my cabin. Some details about this Fairweather Dining Room... - It had a cozy and rustic feel to it. There was a fireplace right nearby within the lodge. - The menu is limited to just a few options including salmon, halibut and fish and chips. There was also ribeye steak and a chicken dish. But, of course, when here on the Glacier Bay waters of the Inside Passage of Alaska...how can you not have seafood? I chose the halibut. According to the menu... "Baked Alaskan Halibut with lemon herb compound-butter, red-skinned garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed carrots and asparagus". As usual, it didn't eat heavy so I had room for dessert...a warm brownie with vanilla ice cream, drizzled caramel syrup and whipped cream (which wasn't even on the menu, but suggested by my server). Lastly, I had a decent view of the boating dock pier though the whole day was dampened by cloudy, foggy and tough conditions outside. Overall, eating here at the Fairweather Dining Room was still a rewarding way to end my visit to Glacier Bay National Park. I really liked the food, service and charming setting.

Overall it's a nice spot right next to the Alaskan Brewing Company, which has lots of great beers and a nice patio spot out back to eat your fish, have a beer, and hang out with your dog. Yum!

There's a reason people keep coming back--it's some of the freshest seafood you can get in Alaska! The entire setup is casual and fun. There is a lot of seating, but keep in mind it's all outdoors, so bring rain gear and dress warmly. Juneau weather can change quickly! There are several bars nearby if you want to grab a beer or wine to enjoy with your meal. You order your food, find a table, put your number on it, and somehow the staff always manages to find you and deliver your food. I have no idea how they do it, but they always do! Yes, it's pricey, but the quality is worth it. They only serve fresh, sustainably caught Alaskan fish, and you can really taste the difference. My go-to order is the Variety Taco Trio (I know I should branch out, but it's just so good!). The fresh salmon tacos when they're in season are fantastic, and the halibut is always a winner too. My husband loves the rockfish and chips--the fries are seriously stellar. They also have a great selection of local sauces for dipping, and you can help yourself. If they have the halibut chowder available, do yourself a favor and order it. A big bowl of warm, creamy chowder on a rainy, chilly Juneau afternoon is absolute perfection. They also offer oysters and champagne if you're looking for something a little extra. A quick note: they have plenty of signs about no outside alcohol, and they are very serious about it. Do not even think about BYOB--they will ask you to leave. They have free water available from jugs with cups, so just enjoy what they offer and follow the rules. You do have to walk about 15 minutes, but the dining room by the water really is the best spot. As we head to the tented dining room, a bald eagle swoops across the sky and lands on a post in the pier. While this is regarded as the best king crab in Alaska, eating king crab in Juneau is actually insanely expensive. Well if you have come all this way, when in Rome? You can order the king crab legs per leg or in a combo that also includes 4 mini crab cakes, a cup of crab bisque, and rolls. If you have a group, get a bucket of crab legs. They offer both red king crabs and golden king crabs. Go with the red and don't bother with the golden. The red king crabs have more meat and have a sweeter flavor. (Also, if you bring cash, you can avoid the 3% credit card fee.) We get a couple combos including crab chowder, crab cakes, drinks, and red king crab legs, plus legs for the rest of the group. They give you a crab cracking tool. There are a couple prongs on top for holding the top of the shell in place and a sharp edge for ripping the shell open from the bottom. Watch out for the sharp pointy spikes of the shell, so tread carefully. You sort of rock the cracker up and down in a straight line lengthwise until the entire cylinder of crab is free. There are three main pieces. The biggest leg segment has the sweetest and firmest crab meat. The smaller leg segment is more tender and even juicier. The body segment has a big bundle of flaky flesh. I can't remember if I've ever had a red king crab leg all to myself, so this is definitely the most and best king crab I've ever had.

At nearly $100 for a single King Crab leg, it certainly is one of the highest "cost per bite" you'll ever have. And to be honest, it didn't taste much different than the frozen King Crab available at our local grocer's meat counter. Some folks will stand line for nearly an hour to score a seat at a shared table. The crew are friendly and once you finally order the food comes quickly. The room is small, cramped and loud. But, again - it's an experience you'll not get anywhere else. I'm glad we finally crossed this off the list, but I doubt we'll do it again.
