I would love to give this place 5 stars and am trying to be fair here, but since the main focus of this business is the lodging part (according to the name) I have to be true to the purpose of these reviews. Summary: Food is very, very good, staff is friendly for the most part, but the rooms are less than clean. The good: the food is very good (for Hoonah or anywhere else) and this is one of the only places in Hoonah to have a sit-down meal. They bake their own treats like muffins, brownies, cookies, etc. which are great for breakfast or dessert. The establishment is right on the water so you can stroll out at anytime and appreciate Alaska's beauty from just steps outside the door, or perhaps even from some of the rooms. My room faced the road so I am unsure of this. The bad: my room was one of the dirtiest I have ever slept in. There was a coffee stain on my wall that looked as if someone threw an entire cup/pot of coffee at the wall and no one so much as looked at it let alone cleaned it up. Nasty is the only word that comes to mind when contemplating my room cleanliness. That being said, I do believe that I got the last room available during my stay, and I was happy to have it as there was nowhere else. Perhaps I got that room that all hotels/motels have but keep as a last resort to occupy. The bathroom cleanliness also left something to be desired. In all fairness, I did not think the rest of the establishment was overly unclean/dirty, but I will say that the standards in Alaska are on a different level than the lower 48. Perhaps I'm just a prissy, spoiled mainlander. Dunno. read more

This place is a diamond in the rough!!! The staff is so pleasant and kind!! The food is delicious and mouthwatering!!! My sheets smelled fresh and clean!!! My view was absolutely spectacular!!! The fishing was amazing and the company was absolutely out of this world!!! I will be back next year for sure!!! read more

We stumbled upon Icy Strait Lodge completely by accident when we visited Icy Strait Point in Hoonah, Alaska. We were originally planning on visiting Icy Strait Brewing to sample some Alaskan beers. We walked 30 minutes along a beautiful waterfront trail to the brewer only to find out they were closed! We decided to head down to the waterfront as there appeared to be a restaurant there (The Fisherman's Daughter). When we got to the window, the server immediately stated, "You're looking at an hour wait at least for food." On top of that, they didn't have the Alaskan beers we wanted to try. We walked next door to a tourist spot and asked if they had Alaskan beers. "Nope, but it's about a 7-minute walk up to Icy Strait Lodge; you can try some beers there." Google Maps to the rescue! We plugged Icy Strait Lodge into the gps and headed out on our walk to the lodge. First impressions: The lodge is unassuming. No big signage to ruin the beautiful Alaskan landscape; rather, just a simple sign that invited you into the lodge, bar, and restaurant (gift shop, coming soon). When we got to the door, we saw a Summer Hours sign advertising the fact that the restaurant and bar run a "split shift" that gives their staff a break in the middle of the day - which was right when we got there. Our hearts sank. We walked in and stood in the lobby. I'm sure we looked a bit lost. A friendly worker came out of the office and asked if she could help us. When we explained our situation, she apologized and reiterated the hours on the sign. Disappointed, we thanked her and wished her well. It was at this point, the miracle of Alaskan hospitality kicked in. "You've come all this way, let me grab the keys to the bar." She disappeared back into the office momentarily and came back with a ring of keys. She led us through the closed restaurant to a locked gate that sealed off the bar, unlocked it and turned on the lights. "What would you like?" she asked. The bar was very well stocked. In addition to all of your staples, they had Alaskan seltzers, IPAs, ales, and more. I picked out a Cherry Grapefruit hard seltzer from Alaskan Brewing Company. My cruise partner got the Island Ale, also from the same brewer; his was brewed with tangerine, passionfruit and guava. The friendly worker led us out to the back patio, asked for our names, and headed back inside while we took in the views. After about 20 minutes, the worker came back out to check on us and see if we needed refills. Of course! For our second round, we tried Alaskan Brewing Company WHITE and Mango Peach hard seltzer. She followed us back outside and shared with us that she owned the lodge! We proceeded to learn about the lodge, Hoonah, and how challenging it can be finding staff. The love for Alaska and Hoonah was clear in the owner's stories. We couldn't believe the luck we had stumbled on finding this place. After we finished our second round, the owner asked us if we'd like a ride back to the cruise port! We paid our bill ($24 for 4 local beers, very reasonable) and loaded up in her vehicle with her blind dog and best friend. She then drove us around Hoonah, sharing more history of the town, waving at everyone she saw - it's clear, the she knows the locals and the locals know the lodge! We stopped by a local park to take in the beautiful views before finally heading back to the cruise port. Upon arrival back at the drop-off spot, we thanked her for the hospitality and promised that if we ever come back to Icy Strait Point we'd visit. What a truly unexpected day and experience in Hoonah, Alaska. If you ever get a chance to visit, swing by Icy Strait Lodge!! Whether you stop in for a quick visit like us, or book a room at the lodge, you won't regret it. The Alaskan hospitality is so genuine and welcoming. Even weeks after our visit, I can't help but smile as I type this. read more

We didn't stay at the lodge. This review is of the bar and restaurant. The bar has a super friendly bartender named Bill. He was very friendly, fills our drinks and held a conversation. We came back for breakfast at the restaurant the next day. Oh so good! I had the Icy Straight special. Eggs, French toast, bacon and hasbrowns. So so good! read more

The Icy Straight Lodge and Restaurant is at the edge of town across from the US Parks Rangers Station. Worth the walk. Wow! What a wonderful staff! Stumbled on to this place when trying to get away from the cruise ship. They were not opened but still hooked us up with drinks and food. They also have cars and boats for rent so we took advantage of the car. They also gave us a map and pointed out areas that we might see a bear. Great, friendly staff! read more

This property has it all...friendly employees, comfortable rooms with awesome views, an attached restaurant and bar, boat and car rentals and much more! The owners Barb and Eddie are amazing and personally make sure all their guests are having the best Alaskan experience possible. Providing warm meals (halibut Pizza!), warm rooms( looking out at the bay and an occasional Brown Bear), boats and rods to go out pull out massive Halibut from Icey Straight. Buzzing bar life where you'll find folks off the cruise boats, on fishing trips and locals spouting off all sorts of stories and jokes. Later in the night The bar is littered with laughter as people were playing free foosball, pool, karaoke, and dancing. Then in the am they have boats to take out to watch Humpback Whales, Porpoises, Sea otters. Sea lions, Eagles swim and fly around you while you fish. Se you next year Icey Straight Lodge!! It seems important to clarify that this is a completely different business than Icy Strait Point, which is the big cannery complex that serves the cruise ship crowd. This is a family-style restaurant/bar on the road to the airport. It's a mellow 20-minute walk from town or the harbor. The dining room is fairly large. At one end of the room, there is a pool table, a foosball table, a jukebox and a big-screen TV. A small raised corner stage for live music. And a separate bar with seating. They also have a large outdoor deck with a nice view of wetlands. Don't know if they have outside seating on nice days, but one can always hope. Bafflingly BAD customer service here, wow. Our call ahead to confirm hours should have been a sign. Grumpster! Upon arrival, we stood around feeling invisible. It was a quiet Sunday evening with two tables of customers. We had to ask if we could sit down. When we asked for two waters and one beer, we got one water and one beer (no glass, not a big deal, but notable). Hot food came without silverware, which she went to get. We waited, and finally got up to find her. Found her filling sodas for another table. Silverware? "Oh. It's over there," she said, pointing to a cart. So I got it myself. I asked her for a water, which she brought. Water glasses soon went dry. Did I want another beer? Maybe. Did we need anything? Yes (and so we looked for and found butter on the aforementioned cart). But we never saw her again until we went to the kitchen to ask for the bill. When she brought the bill, it was incorrect. We pointed out the bill listed a price different from the menu. Her reply? "Well that's how it is in the system." And....? She corrected the bill, but it clearly inconvenienced her. Just all around unbelievably bad service. All that said, this is Hoonah and your options are few. Chalk our experience up to an anomaly and/or just laugh at the bad service (we sure did), then you may find this to your liking. We heard they have good burgers. The pizza at the next table looked really tasty. We had the ham dinner special (overcooked broccoli, but otherwise just fine) and the soup and salad bar, which was fine (though the beef stew would be better without canned green beans). The menu has a little something for everyone (especially errors, lots and lots of spelling, apostrophe and capitalization errors if that entertains you). There are tables large enough for big groups. I don't know if it ever gets crowded, but it feels like the kind of place where you can hang out afterward for as long as you like, have a drink, play a game of pool, socialize with friends and family, especially if you are just passing through and are otherwise lacking a large hangout space to do such things. We stay at the Icy Strait Lodge every time we are in Hoonah. Excellent customer service! The food is fantastic as well. Tastiest fried chicken I've ever had and I travel a lot! The soft serve ice cream is a real treat when you've been out on the boat for awhile too. Ed and Barb are the best! Highly recommend! read more

I go to this lodge every year because it is one of the best values for your money anywhere in Alaska and the fishing is just wonderful. It's nice to go fishing and have a full restaurant and bar to enjoy between fishing adventures. No where else in SE Alaska can this be done. You can enjoy yourself on a economical budget compared to some of the lodge prices elsewhere so go to Hoonah and stay at the Icy Strait Lodge for the best value in Alaska!!!! read more
