I came into Cotton Patch looking for fabric for my kids' crib bedding. I was immediately asked if I needed any help. I said I was just going to look around as I thought I was not going to find anything b/c I had previously gone to Michaels and didn't find anything I liked. So I found 1 fabric I liked and asked for help picking out a few other fabrics for the quilt. I was a little overwhelmed. The woman who helped me was fabulous! She helped me with the amount I needed for the 2 quilts and 2 bedskirts (twins). I had no clue b/c my MIL was the sewer who wasn't there. But the fabric pefect! This store has a wonderful selection of sewing and quilting needs. They had fabrics that ranged from baby themes, Asian, holiday, color filled patterns and more. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They helped us select a set of fabrics, thread and size of our quilt. I would definitely recommend this store to others. read more

I've spent many happy hours in the Cotton Patch. My favorite spot is at the fat quarters drawers at the back of the store. And there are always two or three knowledgeable, friendly fabric gurus within sight to bounce ideas off. I've taken a couple of sewing classes there, and just loved them. This is a store to plan a day around. Great fabric, great assistants and most of all GREAT CLASSES. I have taken the most informative lively and enjoyable classes here. Where else can you take a class from Alex Anderson one week and Gwen Marston the next with Freddy Moran soon to follow. I love love this store. It has a large variety of fabric, threads and notions. They have great classes. The sales staff is so nice, always helpful never pushy. I'm excited, today I just purchased a new machine from them and they answered all my questions. It's nice to know they know their product lines. A cute little fabric store in the east bay. The ladies there were all friendly and ready to chat. A good selection of fabric, but the prices were not very competitive. Also the precut selection was disappointing.... I will probably only return if I'm looking for that one special thing, but I don't think I can justify the cost of shopping here regularly. read more

Rude! I hope this is not typical of this store, but when I went in to pick up my wife's prepaid order (of about 20 items), I was not greeted, and the woman who "served" me was aloof, disinterested, unfriendly, and rude. Upon leaving with my two heavy bags of merchandise, I said, "Thank you very much." She said nothing--no eye contact, no thank you, and no merry Christmas wishes. Another customer within earshot was friendly, but not this clerk. Whether you buy 100 items or just one, it seems to me that you at least deserve a thank you. The staff is friendly and the prices are mid-range. Usually quilt shops have a specialty but this one seems to have multiple personality disorder. It would be nice if fabrics in the same line or by the same designer were grouped together. When quilting you often need coordinating fabrics in the same line and here you have to hunt for them. It is worth a stop if in the area but this isn't a shop I make a special trip for. read more

I love this store. It's filled with colorful fabrics, great patterns and sewing/quilting supplies and the staff is warm and wonderful. They can help you become a quilter and an even better quilter! Whatever your level, it's welcoming and they offer classes at the Learning Center across the street. Knowledgable teachers and bright light with big design walls for each student. It's been in business for a long long time and its sure good knowing that there is still fantastic brick and mortar stores around the bay area. It's worth the price to pay a little extra to see it in person and have the hands on experience vs buying it online. read more

The Cotton Patch Trip So, yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with Chris who is the resident machine tech who keeps my Bernina in tip top working order. I had signed up for a class with him on maintaining my machine and, somehow, lost the note which had the date on it. For some reason I thought that it was a day during the last week of the month, so I called Sunday to see when it was. Oops, it was the 19th! Dismayed, I called Chris the next day. He graciously invited me to come in for a one-on-one lesson. Having maintained my own mechanical machines, it was easy to follow his instructions. I learned about some other oiling points that I can service on a regular basis to extend the life of my machine. I use my machine a lot and will probably oil it about once every week or two. He is patient, very pleasant and very knowledgeable in the repair and servicing of Bernina's and other machines. He loves what he does. I so appreciate The Cotton Patch's commitment to service. When my machine had to go in for repairs while Chris was on vacation, Carolie Hensley, the proprietor, sent me home with a loaner machine similar to my own. I know that this is not usually a store policy, but due the the longer time period, I asked if this were a possibility. Thank you, Carolie for making my day! Unfortunately, Carolie was in a meeting at the time I was taking my pictures. However, I did manage to snap a couple of the staff. Speaking of the staff, whenever I have had the occasion to talk to or ask for help from the staff at the Cotton Patch, they have always been courteous and helpful. I encourage anyone who wants to buy a machine, get one serviced, take a class or see/buy the latest fabulous fabrics that are offered, to go to the Cotton Patch for a great selection. My flabber was gasted! I searched craigslist.org, the yellow pages, and made numerous phone calls trying to find someone in San Francisco to repair my Bernette sewing machine. I finally called The Sewing Workshop on Balboa and they recommended the Cotton Patch. I had called some other places and could NOT communicate with them. I was hesitant to call yet another, but the phone experience was encouraging. I found Alison to be very knowledgeable and helpful. So, I fought the traffic jam on 24, found the place and was quite impressed. The young man (I think his name is Chris) who fixed my machine was quick, thorough and excellent. A good place to buy notions. Excellent display of high quality threads. I've found every notion I ever came in to buy: snaps, hooks, zippers, threads, needles, elastic... All for decent prices. Easy parking and easy access from Highway 24. Lucky for me, I have no need to go to ugly big box mediocre fabric stores now. read more

The fabric selection is over the top in variety and beauty. The store is organized well so I can always find what I want. The Cotton Patch has a great selection of quilting fabrics, patterns, rulers and thread, and a whole bunch of very nice sewing machines that I try to hustle past so as to avoid getting the itch to buy one. :) The fabric is good-quality cotton, and the prices are competitive with other specialty quilt shops. The Cotton Patch has high quality fabric, but that's not all!! The classes I have taken are amazing and they offer a wide variety taught by knowledgeable instructors who make learning fun. Two years ago I started my quilting journey by signing up for Susie Northrop's Beginning Quilting Class. I was worried that this old dog probably couldn't learn a new skill, but Susie proved me wrong. She is a WONDERFUL teacher, if you have ever thought about learning to quilt this is the place for you and Susie is your teacher. You will learn everything from buying your first yards of fabric to quilting your finished quilt top. I have taken this class twice and learned something new in every class. I have taken Susie's Beginner Plus class twice as well and it will remain one of the best classes I have ever taken. I think I have become a Susie Groupie. I now have a basic foundation and have taken several other classes. Cheryl is another great teacher, I have taken a Christmas Tree Class from her and am currently taking a really fun Block Of The Month class. Cheryl's instructions for the blocks are so clear and full of pictures even I can do them. I always find fabric to bring home for my stash when I go to the Cotton Patch. It doesn't matter if i am starting a new project with a new colorway, or if I am adding to my existing color collection, there is always something new to see and touch. I have taken some terrific classes there also. My favorite was the Christmas Goose class that Carolie taught. The salespeople are friendly and know their stuff.
