My first visit at Maven Coco left me pleasantly surprised - the inventory was similar to the way it always was. The racks were still perfectly filled with quality items at decent prices. Items were nicely displayed and it was easy to peruse the racks because they weren't overstocked. I was able to find several pieces to buy that day. Sadly, my next two visits left me a bit disappointed. First the young girl behind the counter does not greet or talk to you at all. She sits looking down at her phone the whole time I'm in there. Yet, the shoe shelf is disheveled, lots of the clothes on the racks are not straightened - buttoned, tied, adjusted on the hangers so that it doesn't fall off when you move the hanger, etc.. The racks are filled almost beyond the ability to move the items easily. The prices are now pretty outrageously steep - even for quality, higher end items. I hope this is just temporary and that my next visit will prove me wrong.

The salesperson would not accept the return or exchange because the shirt "didn't look familiar" to her. Umm, excuse me...? I returned the shirt in the Lafayette store and the salesperson said that what I was told in the Orinda store was completely untrue and inappropriate. All returns are accepted within 30 days with a receipt. Would that have happened to someone of a "lighter hue"? I doubt it... Yes, I'm a Black woman. Needless to say I will never frequent McCaulou's again.

But once I got to the showroom, it was apparent my info got through, because Stephanie had set aside the pieces I was interested in. She was very helpful, and patient with my indecisiveness. One of the bags I wanted was out of stock, and not coming back, but Stephanie remembered there was a return at the warehouse, and managed to get it to me. I fell in love with Ember + Fog candles during a pop up at one of the Embarcadero plazas during this past holiday season. While small batches typically cost more expensive than large corporation offerings, I prefer supporting local small batches for gifts and a little pick-me-up. The prices are beyond great if you love vintage clothing and know fabrics. I may have found my favorite dress of all time here for a whopping $14 (because it's a two piece set of decorative vintage fabric) it was in the premium section and the volunteers were adorable making sure I knew why it was priced this way. (I couldn't afford a yard of this fabric retail I'm giddy about a vintage two piece set that I can customize). To then discover that the proceeds go to support women's scholarships was the ultimate bonus! My grand total for everything was $54 and I happily gave my change to the donation bucket by the register. If you are in the area and love unique vintage items this is a must explore. I had to resist the urge to buy several of the tea cup collections. I'm a sucker for vintage tea sets and they have several that are stunning! Here is how I landed on picking Josh over my other comparable option. First, customer service. My initial call with Josh's was met with patience and professionalism. The person who answered my call helped me understand what I'm trying to get done, how long it would take and a good estimate of how much it would cost. On top of that they answered me on the first call. I couldn't say the same about my other options. Second, service. Josh's website makes it easy to book an appointment. I went on, booked a 20 min consultation and arrived to my appointment. I want to say thank you to Josh for being patient because I arrived ten minutes late due to coming from the east bay and he still gave me the time and care he normally would if I came on time. Josh knew exactly what had to be done before I even told him anything. He just looked at me and started pinning things up--I was very impressed. He gave me his honest feedback and allowed me to pick the best option possible for my needs without being pushy about additional alterations/alteration methods. I felt like I was in very good hands. Last but not least, the work. Josh's is only open on Saturdays and closed Sundays--so I had to pick up my suit before work at 8 AM. I tried on my suit just in case I needed additional work and it fit like a glove. I felt ready like I was going to a red carpet event and you can tell how well he did from my photo. Everything fitted perfectly and I left extremely satisfied. The cost was also very reasonable for adjustments on both my blazer and pants--it came down to $200 cash flat and finish time was less than the estimated 2 weeks. So if you're looking for someone to get you ready for that special event in your life, I highly recommend heading over to Josh's. Price is reasonable, work is professional and customer service is topnotch.
