I wanted to love my first experience at "Mateo's" on March 26, 2026, but it fell short, so I'm going to have a solo working lunch or breakfast here hopefully soon to get a better sense of the dining scene. The cutoff at 7 pm is a bit early for dinner in my opinion, but that's when they close. Also, when I just wanted a few items to take home with me to add to add to my homemade taco dinner, a young female employee explained that they had to take the chile con queso off of their menu because "nobody liked it." Lol. I mean, I appreciate the honesty, but maybe just mark it off of the menu and be a little more professional next time. The salsa tasted homemade. The small bag of chips did not. My daughters did not like their birthday cake cookies. That was a bummer. Super small cafe, but colorful Mexican decor all throughout. Located on the south side of Albertsons Market in the plaza.

I suppose it's because I am catching up with Season 4 of Netflix's The Crown that I am likening the overall feels of this coffee shop to the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana (RIP). On one hand you love it because the product is what your buying. You want good coffee after a long night of drinking with your brothers and their families. On the other you hate it because you feel as though their looks were deceiving... that underneath the cute writing on the menu and the idea of not one but two drive-thru lanes makes it seem they've got their act together when in reality they were as conflicted as the above-said members of the royal family. This being said, I would go here over a half-heartedly made Starbucks (in which there is a location in Hobbs) drink every single time.

Parking in the unmarked lots on either side of the building was available. I hope they improve this someday with an even ground and painted lines. With as packed as it was, I was surprised our wait was only about 15 minutes. The host was friendly and attentive, asking if we liked our seat. A basket of soft table bread reminiscent of rolls with olive oil was served sooner after we received our drinks (2 sweet iced teas, $5.98 and a Mug root beer, $2.99). They do not serve wine or other alcoholic beverages. My youngest and I had dinner salads served in bowls. The salad, while simple, was freshly served with mostly green lettuce, a grape tomato, and single ring of red onion. I appreciated their serving mine plain and bringing olive oil for me as dressing. I dashed a bit of grated Parmesan cheese and a touch of salt on top of the drizzled oil. They also brought red wine vinegar. My oldest enjoy a small supreme pizza ($16.99). For a small, it was considerable size. She brought most of it home. My youngest chose manicotti ($13.99). She must have enjoyed it because she did not share. I had really high hopes for my piccata entree, but my (gluten free) penne pasta per request was way overcooked. I prefer my pasta al dente, but much of it was mushy. But the sauce was really good. I had this dish with shrimp ($20.98). I gave two of my shrimp to my youngest and I had three. Service by Kelvin was great! Just a minor hiccup in forgetting our takeout boxes. He remembered our Italian cream cake ($7.99) which was divine and made in-house. It's markedly loud inside. This restaurant took the place of longtime meat market resident, Kendall's - in which case I saw an old sign in the corner that said "Welcome to Kendall's" on it. There are a few things they could do to take the ambiance and overall Italian vibe to the next level. Overall, I do recommend this place. I look forward to trying more dishes. I opted for the #15 shrimp fried rice ($13). Their fried rice is mouthwatering delicious. Beneath all my rice was even more shrimp. I didn't count them, but it was more than I could handle in one setting. They really loaded my takeout box! It also came with an egg roll, fork, napkins, and condiments. So appreciated. My daughters' great grandmother on their dad's side used to make me egg foo young. This outfit makes it too! Might have to try theirs for nostalgia as I never make it at home. Awesome service. Order. Pay. They assign you a handheld buzzer. My food came out in less than the estimated 5 minutes. The only thing I would change is to add prices to their menu. Huge fan! I was seated right away and served some very good red salsa and crispy, semi-thick homemade tortilla chips. I liked the variety of high-top and normal-height tables. I knew as soon as I saw "blackened tilapia" on the menu I had to have it. "Served on a bed of rice pila" ($12.99), it also came with my choice of two sides. The charro beans and fried okra were excellent! While my fish wasn't the freshest, the seasoning was really delicious. The outer edges were crispy, but inside the fish was flaky and moist. I also ordered a refreshing Sprite. Paid cash. Got just a little less than $4 back. Service was nice, but my waitress only checked on me after she realized I was ready to go. The food is fairly unique to Lea County. I can see why my employees like this place. I'm glad I had a lot on my mind that day... Really dumb parking lot, though. How it works... you either sign in or let the hostess know how many. The lobby area is tiny. There are seats but you'll probably have to share a bench. They accommodate large parties of it seems up to 12. I kept hearing that number. Lol. On 7.11.2025, I was seated at a a quieter area by myself. Reba took over as my waitress. She is the sweetest little ol' lady! She brought me fresh rolls. Even one to-go before I left. The buffet seemed interesting, but I wanted the 8 oz. ribeye steak ($16.95 with a side & a salad bar visit). They served it in a reasonable amount of time, medium rare. It was perfect. Good fatty pieces to keep it juicy. Reba asked me if I wanted steak sauce. No thanks. Not needed. Before that I visited the salad bar. It's a decent salad bar. The ladies refresh it often and tidy it up. I just don't like the tight fit and the cords in the way on the floor if you have to use the other side like I did. The brisket was melt in your mouth and the BBQ chicken was moist and feel off the bone. The sausage was not spicy but very flavorful. The dinner rolls are like clouds! And the strawberry pie, brownies and peach cobble and chocolate pudding and ice cream were available if you still had room for them!
