this place has saved me during my pregnancy. i have Hyperemesis Gravedarum- basically morning sickness on steroids - and rarely string together 3-4 days without getting sick. i've struggled with the ability to recognize the feeling of hunger.. and once you cross a certain hunger threshold - you're nauseated and eating becomes near impossible. i've had too many 'take a bite of toast to throw it up' moments - and after 7 months of this... i am so over it! This place helps me get a big increase in protein that i desperately need. The chocolate banana PB is my go-to, but the aloe teas are also great for hydration!! The staff is knowledgeable and caring, and I often see people just hanging out at the 'bar' style seating. They have overnight oats and protein bites and protein donuts, even! I came in a few weeks later with my bf, and he tried Thin Mint, which was also very close in flavor to the girl scout cookie. The best part? I think my second visit will be my last. I went for the first time earlier this week and I was greeted with a very uninterested and emotionless "do you know what you want" I responded with "not yet it's my first time here" and he offered no further information. I made a decision and got an average smoothie for a little over 10 dollars. I thought to give it another try so I went back today hoping to get something better. I was once again greeted as if I was an annoyance but whatever I'm not there to hang out and make friends, so I found one I wanted and asked if i could get it without protein and at first he said no and had some pretty illogical reasoning but, I didn't relent and he ended up agreeing to make it the way I wanted it so I said hey let's make it one size bigger (mega) which is about the same as a large smoothie at other popular smoothie places. She's was welcoming, but at the same time made me feel a little dismissed. They did not have my drink on the menu, which i thought would have been the standard at all Herbalife shops. BUT they were very accommodating and said they would try to make it (& the owner also mentioned she had a lot more drink recipes on the side). When i got the shake, it was only full up to the brim of the cup, i felt it was a waste of a dome lid. I tried to drink it all, but i tossed it halfway because i could not stand the chalky taste anymore. So, on my last trip to Subway I noticed a new place. A place called The Core. At first, I thought it was just another smoothie place. Like a Jamba Juice...or...um....some other smoothie place. But I was told otherwise. They are not a smoothie place, they are a meal replacement place. So, I decided to come back on a day where I hadn't eaten a veggie sandwich. That day was today. Me and my lunch buddy parked on the other side of the lot, because parking blew donkey balls for some reason today. We walked over to this new place. Upon entering I noticed that there was a full crowd in there. I then had three different people ask me if I was a "first timer". One would start, and then stop midway for something and walk off. The third person got our answer, and began to weave their tale of healthiness. They were enthusiastic, and began our meal replacement with a shot of flavored water. "It will lubricate your joints!" said the guy. It was flavored water. It wasn't Simi Tap water. After the shot of water, he put a cup of iced tea in front of us. "It'll burn 80 calories straight away by thermogenically reacting with things!" said the guy. Personally, I think he was using big words to sell us something. He then rambled on about something or other, and before I knew it I had a peanut butter chocolate smoothie placed in front of me. "It's only 330 calories and it will keep you full for hours and hours with no crash!" said the guy. He was very enthusiastic and answered whatever questions we threw at him. He was friendly and asked if we wanted to set up a health measure test thingy. Where they measure everything and tell you how unhealthy you are. Probably so they can convince you that you need more of their healthy stuff. But hey, who knows. My peanut butter banana smoothie was tasty enough, the iced tea was good, and that shot of water was very flavorful. I can see how meal replacement is healthy and good and I'm sure their stuff is retardedly high quality. But, it was 8 bucks for the 3 beverages. I'll fully admit it, I am probably not this place's target audience. Because personally, I'd rather have a burger at Carl's Jr for $5.00. I admit, the first time I tried coming here...I left a little pissed off. Someone had been walking around Regal Plaza passing out free vouchers for your first visit. So I decided to go by after eating...and they were closed for some private thing! I'm glad I gave The Core another chance, because the guy (Ross) passing out flyers remembered me and hooked me up for my first visit. This place is just what I needed, a quick place to go before or after workouts, even in between, to get my dosage of protein or a healthy meal replacement. As hard as I work out and as much as I can eat, I'm the laziest guy I know. Eating healthy, gets old. I'm constantly left thinking and thinking about what I'm allowed to eat, so much so that I get to the point of not even wanting to eat anymore. The Core takes the guess work out of it all. They start you off with a shot of mango aloe vera, which I was told lubricates your joints. I'm no expert on aloe vera so I'm not quite positive about this one, but I do know that aloe vera makes you take #2's easier, so I'm with it. Next comes a raspberry tea blend which is supposed to hydrate rather than dehydrate you. Caffeine is a diuretic and in-fact, does dehydrate; I'm guessing this is decaffeinated? Either way, it wasn't sweet and was actually pretty refreshing. Next comes the smoothie, and I guess you can get pretty much anything in it you want. I had the chocolate, strawberry, and banana smoothie with soy milk and soy protein. Yes, I am lactose intolerant. The soy protein powder they use contains casein, but I didn't have a reaction to it...thank god. Every smoothie they make has 25 grams of protein, more than enough for your body to process before or after a workout. They also offer health measurements (i.e. body fat, muscle mass), which is a nice addition albeit somewhat odd for a place that sells food. I can appreciate it though. The Core definitely gets a recommendation coming from a (very particular) fitness junkie like myself. read more
