They have the best Shrimp Wonton Noodle soups! Every time​ I am craving some wonton this is the best place to get them! The wontons are about 1.5 inches in diameter stuffed with shrimp! And I'm not talking about little pieces of shrimps or shrimp paste but chopped shrimps that still have a crunch when you bite into them. The broth is clear and tastes fresh with a balance. They have a side of chili oil and some red wine vinegar too that you can eat it with. The wontons have a thin skin but loaded with yummy shrimps with a good helping of egg noodles! The restaurant is a bit small and its in a small plaza but parking is not too bad. And if you want dessert, there are a few places in the plaza that you can go to! read more

Upgraded to 3.5 stars. Mostly for their house made fish balls. They were really good, great flavor, very light and fluffy. The fish ball soup came with thin sliced fun in a light broth--delicious. But note to self: their wontons have gotten really big, which is a very bad thing. They're so large, one wonton is like the size of 2.5 regular ones. Wontons should be small and bite size. And they put in big pieces of shrimp, but at least now there's more pork in it. The noodles are almost perfectly cooked, and the broth is good. Service was excellent. After a weekend where I gorged on really heavy duty stuff (hot pot on fri and korean bbq on sat), I was ready for some detoxification via congee on Sunday. I came to this place under recommendation. While I found the congee to be tasty, the price was too much. I also had the fried chicken wings and that was super tasty also. I only gave this place 3 stars because the service was really, really bad. For starters, my waitress forgot a second order for congee that I had originally ordered. Then it took her a while to get me the check. She also didn't pick up finished dishes that I purposely pushed to the edge of the table. I also noticed that many other patrons had to flag her down many times to get service. For such a tiny place such as this, patrons shouldn't have to flag down the waitress for service so often! Howzit!? Despite all the 2 star Yelp reviews on this Won Ton Time replacement joint, I give it a rare 4 star rating. Perhaps they have improved their food since grand opening in October. The 2 dining experiences I have had were quite good. Yes, it is a bit more expensive than other places. But the 2 notable dishes are worth the extra quarters. Won Tons are a bit larger than the previous WTT version in different shapes. Quite flavorful in tasty broth garnish with fresh chives not green onions. 1st class Won Tons almost always serve in a broth made with shrimp shells and fish bones and garnish with fresh chives. Look Fun is sliced in perfect width to show off its smoothness. Fresh Fishcake Congee has a hint of sweetness which all good congee should have. Friendly staff. Notable dishes: Won Ton look fun. Overall rating: 3.5 Star I don't think too much of the rice/egg noodle soup. I feel there is definitely too much MSG in the soup base. The noodles are ok. If I had to pick between the rice or egg noodles, I would go with the egg. However, I really like the wontons here. They are huge and meaty with chunks of shrimp. Randomly came here for dinner because I had an eye appointment in the plaza. The pictures posted outside seemed to promise authentic Hong Kong style food so I was enticed to come in and try. Having lived in HK for several years, maybe I had high expectations? But I have definitely experienced better... I ordered the Fish Ball noodles and shared the Chicken Wings with my parents as an appetizer. The portion of the noodle was small with only a few fish balls, and all I could see while I was eating was the amount of oil floating in my soup. I would think that they would try to scoop it out but there was so much oil that I almost didn't want to eat it anymore. The chicken wings were okay but for the price, I don't really feel like I got my moneys worth as there weren't that many pieces. Service wasn't that attentive either and the waitresses never smiled for the entire time we were there. With so many different HK style cafes and restaurants in and near Alhambra, I doubt I'd come back to The Congee. read more

I am a regular customer of The Congee because of the Wonton noodle soup. I went yesterday and my wonton taste sour/spoil. Seems that when they were preparing the shrimp wonton, they left them out and forgot to put in the refrigerator. Usually I will eat all four but because of the taste I ate one only. I don't have good impression about the food quality for many years. 2 weeks ago, I gave it a try again. My friend ordered Beef Ball noodles, dry. However when we got the food, the beef is not beef ball, they were heavily covered with Baking soda which look so gross. I can't believe they serve such kind of food. My friend did not touch any portion of it. I complained to the waitress and she said she has told us if we want beef noodles. Congee is one of those ultimate comfort dishes in the Asian communities. It's essentially rice porridge with various items to enhance the dish. This place has excellent congee - it was very smooth and they have different types depending on what you feel like eating. My go-to is the beef congee with ginger and scallion. They give generous portions for the price and the taste is not overwhelming, but also flavorful. The place itself is in a pretty crowded complex on the corner of Valley Blvd. and Garfield. It's directly across from The Hat. There is plenty of parking behind the structure. The restaurant itself is small with limited seating. I'm not sure if they had air conditioning, but when we went, it was in the summer so it was pretty hot and stuffy. The employees speak English and are polite, which is a definite plus since I don't speak Mandarin. This is my go-to place if I ever have a craving for congee! read more

I ordered the "fish fillet" with cilantro lo mein while my buddy ordered the wonton and beef stew lo mein (doesn't look like it's actually on the menu). First off, "fish fillet" should mean a fillet of fish. Apparently, it doesn't. It means a fish ball. Second, "with cilantro" should mean that there's cilantro somewhere in the dish. I don't think it means that either. I could find no cilantro. If it was there, I neither saw nor tasted it. They did, however, have one thing in there that wasn't part of name. Grease. Lots of it. As to the wonton and beef stew (which I got a piece of each on an exchange program). The wonton wasn't too shabby. Solid pieces of shrimp in a decently made cantonese-style wonton. The beef tasted ok but it was about as tender as lovemaking with a paddle and a whip. I wouldn't choose to go back, but you might be able to coerce me once in a while. read more

The Congee is a terrific place to go for a quick but high quality meal. Food: The wontons in soup comes with about 7-8 large shrimp & pork wontons the slightly larger than a ping-pong ball. The vegetables in the wonton soup are fresh and delicious. I didn't drink the soup but I'm sure it would have been delicious. The fried chicken wings was also a stand-out. It was crispy and slightly spicy having been fried with jalapeños and garlic. It is a must for anyone visiting the congee. I didn't eat the congee with pork liver because I don't enjoy the liver-taste, but my dad enjoyed it and it seems to be one of their specialities. Service/Cleanliness: Prompt and friendly. We received our order within 5-10 minutes. They were patient, kind, and friendly. We were seated right away on a clean table. The floors seemed to be quite clean. I wonder if the earlier complaint about cockroaches is more epidemic to LA and the dumpsters outside rather than a reflection of the restaurant. We ordered the Chicken/Abalone Congee ($6), Fish Ball Noodle Soup ($6) and the WonTon Noodle Soup ($5.50?) The noodles themselves are good. It's a really thin, chewy yellow noodle that I dig. However, everything else is meh. The Congee had bits of bone in it, and was really salty. I've never liked that type of Fish Ball where it has a ton of that orange rind flavor and this place makes it with extra of that. The wontons themselves are HUGE, and has a ton of shrimp in it but the flavor was just OK. The broth was also really salty too. The only things I liked was just the noodles, and the green veggies. We went here for lunch on a weekend and wanted to try their "congee" hence that's their NAME. I ordered the highest price "seafood congee" in their menu ($6.50) thinking you can't go wrong with a dish that has their NAME on it. Now that's pretty OVER PRICED, and when it arrived it SUCKED!!! The congee was plain and the seafood but little or none. a few fish paste chucks that are the size of a cheetoes, the shrimp was the tiniest you can buy from the market, like a size of a dime. there were some frozen flat squids that tasted like rubber. Also, they ran out of twisted cruellers during their busy hour for lunch. How can you call your business "THE CONGEE" without a decent congee and no twisted cruellers. OVERALL : OVER PRICED, BAD FOOD, ...SERVICE IS OKAY. This place is not gonna last if it continues like this. also, what was funny was this mom at the next table ordered a beef and fish ball combo noodle and had to return it, because she thought the fish balls were suppose to be like the old "WonTon Time" fresh made fish balls. I went to The Congee for the first time and found their noodles are quite good. Love their big and fat wonton. Perfectly cooked noodle and excellent broth. I also try their noodle with beef stew. The beef was well cook and tender. Noodle was perfect. Can't stand why people writes some bad reviews about this place. Can't compare the foods here with those in Hong Kong. This little mom & pop spot might be a little bit hard to find but it's located next to Yogurtland and Crepe Luv. Parking is a bit tricky too since it's located in a plaza with other businesses but it's not difficult. I came here and ordered a shrimp wonton noodle soup to-go for $8. The price is a bit steep considering that it's such a basic noodle soup and I can find other options elsewhere. However, the wontons are packed with huge shrimps and that is probably why the price is a bit high. The noodle soup itself was good but I was given such a small container for soup. When I transferred everything into a bowl, my poor wontons weren't immersed in the soup at all. The service here is like any other Asian restaurant so don't expect much. You can say 'please' and 'thank you' as much as you'd like and still be stared at with the same stern face. Speaking as a HK native living in the US, the best compliment I can give to a wonton shop is this, "This is as close as I can get to Hong Kong wontons without actually flying there." And that is definitely the case with this restaurant. The Chinese congee is also excellent here, smooth feel and the right consistency, I highly recommend the beef slices or preserved duck egg and pork toppings for the congee. The only downside I suppose would be that it is not a spacious shop by any means and during rush times seating can become a problem. Their menu is very simple, they offer a few ingredients and you can choose how you want to assemble it together; type of meet, type of noodle, and whether you want to include the soup with it. I usually come here for the noodles, but when I'm sick I order their porridge (congee) too. They have a good variety and I think I've tried all of them. I like the preserved egg with shredded pork. The fish porridge is good too, but fish and ginger in porridge was never my preference. The noodle I usually order is the wonton and beef brisket flat noodles with soup. The wontons are HUGE and their meat pieces are big and hearty. You can ask them specifically if you want or don't want tendon. My family usually just orders the wonton noodles, and I think it's also delicious. The low-carb option could also be just a bowl of wonton noodles, trust me, it's enough to fill you up. The noodles are cooked right and it's never soggy. The flat noodles do get soggy, though, so I would recommend you eat them fast. It's just the nature of flat noodles. The chicken abalone congee is absolutely amazing. It is so flavorful and they add a ginger-onion oil to it while it cooks to give it a little extra oomph. I've tried the pork liver congee as well and it's just as delicious. If you're feeling some noodles, the wonton noodle soup is good also. Get it with fish balls. They melt in your mouth! Cream of the crop: Pan fried rice rolls! OMG I can't even begin to tell you how delicious those were. We also ordered some dumpling noodles, and the liver congee. The congee had a good amount of flavor and liver in it. Dumplings were okay but I would try the wontons.
