I recently built my gaming pc but came across some problems. I'm not one to leave reviews on places, but I just had to for this one. I called Ray and told him my issue with the new PC. I am a tinkerer and DIY-er so when I broke my Surface Pro 4 while replacing the battery, it took a while to find a shop that was even willing to look at a device a customer had already opened, let alone a Microsoft Surface Pro. In the end, I was told that likely a bad MOSFET, and they were unable to fix it. Not due to the lack of skill, but owing more to the fact that Microsoft doesn't supply spare parts for these things (of which I'm aware). Still, I'm happy they were at least willing to look at it! I should be able to salvage the M.2 drive in there at least. It's gone through 2 battery replacements and a new display, so I guess I got as much life out of it as I can. So I'm sure that as long as your DIY adventures aren't a complete disaster, Ray will give you a fair shake! Hopefully my next laptop or 2-in-1 is more repairable. read more

I almost feel late to the party. So many posted reviews say in their own way what I'm about to state here. Yet I suspect I have been a customer at this establishment longer than most of those who have posted. So allow me to offer some insights as someone who has been a patron of The Computer Shop for over eight years. Since essentially buying the old shop that used to operate at this location, Ray, the owner, has turned it into a service-centered, customer-focused enterprise. He and his small staff have never let me down. Whenever I have needed some repair or maintenance on my devices - either of the two laptops I've owned since 2010 - the problem has been diagnosed, explained to me in plain English, a plan for repair discussed (including a timeline for delivery of any needed parts and when the work would be completed), and an estimate of the cost provided. Inevitably, the work has gotten done as discussed - on time, within the projected cost estimate, and, importantly, right. Maybe that ought not be any big deal, but considering the current (poor) state of so much of what is alleged to be customer service (which is often little more than some representative mouthing platitudes before putting us on interminable hold), real service rendered substantially and effectively and at a locally owned and operated business is not only worth crowing about but absolutely worth a few minutes of my time to write a short review. It is easy to look at all the five-star reviews for this place and ask if something is fishy. I suppose it is a sign of our times that we might look a bit askance at peer feedback that seems universally laudatory. We hear about sites that facilitate all sorts of fraudulent product reviews and wonder if what is said about anything is really true. And for so many Yelpers, ratings are either zero stars or five. This is THE place to go for all your computer repairs. Knowledgeable, fast, thorough, polite. I called the shop because my mother's Windows 8.1 computer was seizing up. Despite the fact she had just loggged on, her disk usage displayed at 100%, preventing her programs and the Internet from loading. From what I have read, this is a common problem among Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 users. There is a wealth of information on the problem with a multitude of solutions out there on the Internet. Most involve disabling Windows essential services, such as SEARCH, and are therefore unacceptable -- even if the supposed "fixes" worked, which they don't. Ray, proprietor and chief technician, immediately knew of a permanent fix for the throttling problem. Evidently, the only tried and true solution to this problem is to have a Solid State Drive (SSD) installed. Yes, this a problem that occurs when the Windows operating system interfaces with older, mechanical hard drives -- hence the 100% disk usage readout in the Task Manager. It seems like a Microsoft problem, but let's face it, Microsoft isn't going to fix the bug anytime soon (I mean, the problem has been around since Windows 8). And, since the goal was a functional PC, I opted for the drive replacement solution. Ray's shop is open on Saturday. I called a little before noon -- Ray closes at 3:00 PM on Saturdays. I got the computer to him around 12:20, and he had the job finished before closing -- same day! Can you believe that? Much of his competition isn't even open on Saturdays. Well, my mom is just thrilled with the PC's performance. Ray mirrored her old hard drive's image on the new SSD and backed all the files from her mechanical drive onto the new SSD. The machine now performs faster than it ever had -- even when new. And, it is transparent to my mom, who at age 89 hates change of any kind. I have no idea why her PC operated fine for so long, then took a turn for the worse, but that's what happened. It just slowed down over a period of months with the throttling problem, then ceased to operate. The bug is there, it just doesn't bite everyone at once. I have the same problem with my own home Windows PC. Believe me, since I tried ALL the fixes on that one, Ray will be getting my business again in the near future. I know that my work laptop (I work from home), a Lenovo Thinkpad Windows 10 computer with SSD, runs flawlessly. So, now you know the solution to the problem of the disk drive thinking it is being 100% utilized, when it in fact is using only .5% of its resources. And, you know where to go to get the problem fixed. Thank you so much, Ray. No reason to go anywhere else for your computer repair needs. Fast, efficient, friendly. I've taken 2 computers here this past year and Ray has worked his magic on both of them. The first one was a very old PC from a Mackie D8B mixing console. The mixer relies on a CPU "brain". Ray was able to fix this within 1 day. The 2nd involved putting in a new ssd drive (that I had already formatted and cloned) in an iMac. I chose this place based on the Yelp reviews and vicinity to my home. My laptop needed a new screen as well as performance upgrades. Ray was very kind and took the time to answer all of my questions. I had a lot of questions and he was very patient with me. My laptop was fairly dated and pretty slow. Ray upgraded my RAM and changed my hard drive to a solid state drive as well as upgrade the OS to windows 10. He told me the job would take 3-5 days, but he got it done in 2!
