If we are just going by price and food quality I'd give Compass 4 stars. Reasonably priced, pretty solid wood-fired pizza. The stuffed mushrooms were good too. But unfortunately I have to drop it to 3 stars as the setting is weird and the service was bad, teetering on horrible. It's located downtown at the back of a building that looked like it had a flower shop, a coffee shop and a salon to walk through before you got to the restaurant. I understand you gotta do what you gotta do as a business owner, but it was a bit strange. That didn't detract from our experience, but when we DID get into the restaurant, it's not a good sign that you feel unwelcome and frankly a burden to the staff. Which is exactly what we felt like. We were told "sit wherever". "To drink?" "We have Pepsi products but Pepsi out" as she walked away. It never got better from there. When I came across this place online I wasn't really sure what to expect. When you're in McAlester most times people always tell you "Go to Pete's Place! 1925 Pete's Place!" Well I went to Pete's around 12:30 for lunch and it was dead. I was also struggling with whether or not I wanted to tackle an Italian Meal in the middle of the day, so I started to do some research. The reviews for The Compass were pretty good and the pics looked great so I made the 10-15 drive in a different direction to give it a shot. Now upon entering I was even more thrown off. This restaurant sits at the back of a coffee/antique style store in one of those old downtown strips. (Pic posted) You know the ones! Hesitantly I pressed on to the back. I was greeted by a nice young man who sat me and then approached by a very nice waitress. This place was great about giving recommendations. Although the seemed to be know for the pizzas and pasta I just wasn't feeling it so I started to ask about the menu a bit. I felt like the people working their enthusiastically voiced their opinions about what they liked and it all sounded great. I myself really like wings and always tend to try them if they are on the menu. With what appeared to be a lot of great flavors to choose from I went with the traditional approach and got the standard Buffalo sauce as my app. I don't know what they are feeding their chickens in McAlester but these great big party size wings made their way to the table with an excellent buttery rich buffalo coating on them and they were really good. Now I'm not going to sell you on the best ever, like I said I've had tons of wings over the year and that's always a tough call. Plus I plan on saving the best part for last. The Jerk Chicken Sandwich This thing kicked ass, a perfectly fried chicken breast on a house made bun perfectly accompanied by a pickled coleslaw and mango habanero jelly. This place really caught me off guard and I highly recommend giving it a shot! I know I will be and I will be taking the next recommendation from the staff. Food was good lots of options I loved their appetizers and salads however one of the cooks came out to our table to ask how our steak was which is a wonderful trait but you could tell they did not wear a hair net while cooking and the person smelled of cigarette smoke strongly that was a turn off to going back. This place is a good find in main downtown area. Everyone passing through town should definitely make plans to stop by, except closed Sundays. Wonderful bread for a starter! We ordered stuffed mushrooms that were good. Then the Greek Chicken pasta with banana peppers and bacon with the best sauce! I will be wanting this again for sure. Ordered a Individual chicken pizza that was good and bigger than I thought. They have several sandwiches that sound good too. Next time will try something with meatballs. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. This is not just a pizza place but an Italian heaven. Such a relaxed friendly place with good service. So about two weeks ago me and my friend went to eat at the compass and everything was going good the service was good until the end when we were paying. Our server was splitting our checks and when I went to pay she snatched the receipt out of my hand before I could tip and said " I need that". I thought nothing of it at the time until I looked at my receipt it came out to $20 mind you my meal was only 12.99!! I was gonna tip her anyways but she took the receipt before I could and as I walked away turns out she filled it out herself and gave herself a hefty tip. I am very disappointed because I love the compass. I can't remember her name but she was short dark brown hair that was up in a ponytail and was at least in her 30s. read more

Everything tasted great, but we were hoping for a bit more wood fired flavor in our food. The two pizzas we order needed a tad more cooking as the centers weren't crisp, and the wings had more of a deep fried texture than wood fired oven. But- we ate most of it and left full. read more

ORDER TAKE OUT!!!!!! overall, compass's food is pretty good. Their servers however, are not. Today we walked in, and were told to sit anywhere. Every table was dirty, so we picked one and sat down. Our server took a very long time to come to the table, and she was not kind at all. She took our drink order, delivered our drinks, and took our food order quickly and never returned to the table. I specifically asked for bruschetta "as an appetizer" and you may be able to guess that it came with our food. We ordered 16 wings to share, and asked for extra ranch. A different server brought our food out (all at once) without ranch or plates. We asked him for refills and ranch, which he brought but we didn't see another server after that. The food was fine. I often feel like their food is slightly on the undercooked side but the wings were white throughout, so it was fine. We ate without any other service, even though I would've loved a plate, refill and some napkins. And to top it all off, their Dr. Pepper was gross! Awful experience, the food is the only thing keeping my rating above 1 star. (In case you missed it, no one ever wiped the table down!!! We ate at a dirty table, y'all!!) read more

After a 550-mile drive, I was looking for a very cold beer to wind down with but Katie convinced me to stay for dinner and get a drink later as The Compass doesn't sell alcohol. So I started dinner with some delicious focaccia bread to start with which came with homemade garlic n chives butter. The bread was so soft, fluffy and delicious that it didn't really need the butter but it was smooth and spreadable. Ordered a cranberry spinach salad a small Margherita pizza as well as a small habanero Hawaiian pizza. Everything was delicious except the Hawaiian pizza came out with a white sauce instead of a tomato sauce, which I do not prefer. This place used to be so good, but the last couple visits have been bad. This most recent visit had us waiting 45 minutes after ordering before we left because they hadn't even started our pizzas. Pretty terrible experience. Place needs to shut down and fix the issues before opening again because it's really awful currently. They don't even clean the floors, there was dirt and trash all over. Fantastic restaurant. Super excited to have a gluten free option and the staff was really nice and friendly. I had the gf white pizza and the crust was really crispy which can be hard to achieve when not using traditional wheat flour. Also tried the monster fries and the thick pieces of bacon were almost like jerky and really stepped up the traditional cheese fry experience. Jalapeño relish added some great flavor too. Happened to stop by on my way through town. The staff was nice but seemed bored. I never see it as a good sign when the waitresses are sitting at a table on their phones and talking. I didn't have to wait long for my food and the pizza I ordered was decent. However the main reason I give it 3 stars is the the arcade game in the lobby. It's soooo loud and obnoxious. It would be impossible to eat there for lunch and not be annoyed by the music and sounds on repeat. I even asked the staff about it and they said it was new and yeah they hated it too! I got the brussels sprouts pizza--though I really wondered what it was going to be like. It is delicious! The brussels sprouts are very thinly sliced and sautéed with caramelized onions in a garlic herb sauce and balsamic reduction. I got it without bacon or cheese. As a vegetarian, I struggle to find tasty pizzas. This one really delivered. My husband had the Messy Jesse, and loved it too! Not bad, not best pizza I've ever had. Better than your standard blah Pizza Hutt pizza. Pizza was made well, service was great, and place was clean. The jalapeño bombs are not what you might think. They are just mini bread stick balls with melted cheese over the top, sprinkled with a very small amount of peppers and bacon. Super greasy. Wouldn't order them again, but the pizza was good. The last time I went, I ended up leaving after 15 mins of sitting at a table waiting for any kind of acknowledgment. Mind you, the wait staff sat us there. My boyfriend and I went here to have dinner one night and the food was pretty good. We got two pizzas and garlic knots. They were the traditional pizza taste versus an overly processed cookie cutter pizza. The only problems I had was the ones we got were very greasy (classic margarita which has marinara, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil and I had the Delilah which has spicy marinara, chicken, bacon, red onion, bell peppers, cilantro, ranch drizzle), it's a bit pricey if you do the pizzas, and the atmosphere in the upper part of the restaurant isn't what I'd expect from a top rated restaurant. Plus the table we got assigned was still dirty when we sat down. Mainly just lots of crumbs so just could have been whipped off pretty easily. It was very tasty so it's really one of those places to definitely try for yourself. Experiences can be different so maybe you'll have a better time read more
