This place makes you reminisce and step back in time to old school diners. very casual, friendly staff, still has the glass room that was used in the 90's for smokers lol of corse mow clean and just a nostalgic look. Appeared to be a local's place however we felt welcome.. full menu and they will change anything to make the plate just how you want it. We had chicken fried chicken and ordered a side of sausage gravy just because I wanted to taste it also and it was yummy. Coffee was good diner coffee. Price was reasonable. I guess the only reason I didn't give it a five star is because some of the things they use are instant or out of a box but it appeared that most were homemade. I ordered a regular old breakfast with coffee. Everything was delicious. So far, this is the only place I'll eat at again in McAlester!!!! I found What About Bob's and even though it was a bit out of the way but found a pretty packed parking lot so I thought it was a good sign. It's definitely a place for locals and I didn't feel unwelcome but I didn't get the friendliness that other reviews here mentioned. They were polite and all but it was very perfunctory, like they were going off a checklist. I got their local specialty, the Sunrise Surprise which was ok. Good, but nothing to go out of my way for. Restaurant is popular with local people. Seems that many dine at this restaurant day after day. Was there at 10 AM on a weekday in the summer. There are two dining rooms. One dining room is 15 degrees cooler than the other. Apparently the air conditioning did not work in our dining room. The parking lot was full and most tables were taken in the restaurant. There is no music and no television. They give an un-fancy menu. Had a hot roast beef sandwich. It came with a lot of bread and a small amount of meat. (2 stars). The French fries were average. (3 stars). Had pancakes. They were good. (4 stars). My friend had a chicken fried steak that he liked. (4 stars). All three of us shared biscuits and gravy. They were good. Everything was hot. It seems that the breakfast foods were better than the other foods. The service was average to good. It was busy there. The bathroom was clean. Considering that I have eaten at other local restaurants that were five star, I would not eat there again. There are better places to eat in McAlester, OK. read more

Great place to eat!!! We were there on a Sunday morning on our way to the Talimena scenic drive and stopped here for breakfast. We went in at about 8:30 am or 9 am. The place was packed!!! Saw a bunch of local folks there and that is always a very good sign. Our server (I think her name was Marigand) was extremely polite and courteous with a very pleasant smile all the time. Food was great and came out quick. I had the omelet (was delicious) and my son had french toasts (was good too) and two water - nothing fancy. But the overall experience was very good. I mean, I could not ask for more-- we were looking for a good restaurant for lunch on our road trip through Oklahoma. A good kids menu was clutch to please our 8yo and 2yo and WAB's delivered. They got nuggets, fries, and fruit (though Mac and cheese or a turkey sandwich were contenders). I had a great chopped salad with fresh crunchy lettuce, and the hubs had a burger with mushrooms and bacon that was delicious. Fries cooked to perfection.
