I really can't say enough good things about this place. We were meeting family here, driving up from Connecticut, got caught in horrendous traffic, and wound up arriving an hour late, 50 minutes before closing, expecting to get the stink eye since there was only one other table that was just finishing up. Instead we got great service, friendly and very efficient, almost like their mission was to--surprise!--make sure we had a great dining experience. We are traveling musicians and often wind up coming to restaurants within their last hour, and believe me this type of customer service is, sadly, not the norm. On to the food. The food! I started with the blood orange martini, very tasty and refreshing after our long drive. Nice basket of warm chewy bread arrived at the table almost immediately, yum! I had the Aracini (risotto balls) appetizer which was delicious and fairly authentic, done to perfect crispness with an accompanying red pepper cream sauce. The forks came out all around and everyone agreed that this app was first rate. My partner had the special salmon entree with dijon sauce, highly highly recommended if this item is on the menu. I had the ginger soy tuna dish with noodles, quite good. But for me, the standout dish was the pot roast ordered by my friend, wow!! I'm not normally a fan of pot roast but the meat was super tender and the sauce completely delectable. I was only going to take a taste, but wound up taking three, and had to restrain myself from taking more, it was so good. My partner can't finish a meal without dessert and coffee, and even though we knew they were probably trying to close up, they brewed some coffee for him and comp'ed us a creme brulee (perfectly done) for the table. Just straight up great service. We've eaten at the Common Man in Claremont and I think somewhere else, and they're always great. I think the Nantucket pie is a standard on the menus and it is a winner--scallops, shrimp, haddock AND lobster baked in a creamy lobster sauce topped with Ritz cracker crumbs in classic New England fashiom. It looks like they have several restaurants and a couple of diners up and down I-93 and Route 3 in New Hampshire under different names, would like to try them all. But it would be hard to resist coming back to this location for another great meal. My tastes tend to run to funky ethnic joints but I would come back to this place any time. The burgers are a safe bet, and I really enjoy the PB&J burger! Lobster Chowder was good, French Onion Soup was too salty. The New England pot roast was also good, but I feel like the flavor of the gravy could use some improvement, it didn't taste like beef, just like overcooked carrots. We sat at a bar table, The bartender was great sorry did not get his name but we then were turned over to a girl. Sorry I do not think she wanted to be there. Food was not cooked right and husband got a totally different meal. She said sorry thought you order that?? She sent the manager over he came over they redid my husbands meal and manager said he would be back to check on him. He walked by our table 3 times never stopping by or asking how it was. Sorry but Concord location has gone down hill. Use to be our go to place but will not hurry back. We talked to the woman at the front as we said we like to talk to owner first before yelp. She asked for name and number she was excellent and said she wanted a manager to call us.....no call. Hum.... Came here for lunch and it was alright, I think the dinner menu is better. I had the crispy chicken chipotle ranch wrap and it was just okay, it wasn't really spicy and had an interesting flavor to it. The fries were great and I'm glad I added them as a side. Restaurant building has a good history to it, warm ambiance and great, friendly service. But the highlight is the food... they give you warm rolls to start and they were delicious. Burger was charred all over the outside. Mac topping was Cold and completely tasteless except for the burnt flavor from the burger. Tried the signature margarita and it was nothing but sour mix. Waitress came by maybe 3 times in 2 hours of our 8 person party being there. We were there at 4 so before things got real busy. Had lunch with my daughter and her two children (4&2) at The Common Man in Merrimack. The Common Man restaurants are predictably & consistently good. I have been to several of their restaurants without any complaints. We had very good service from Kaitlyn who was quick to get our drinks to us and take our food order. I had the Asian Bowl which had just the right amount of spice for me ( I don't like really spicy food). My daughter had a Chicken Ranch wrap with chips she ate it all and shared some her chips with me & the kiddos. The kids shared the kids Cheeseburger and Mac & Cheese and a side of carrots. The serving of Mac & Cheese is generous and I tried some-delicious. There was plenty to take home. The kids enjoyed their food and also chocolate milk. The restaurant is nicely decorated with lots to look at. Plenty of parking. Recommended. read more

Amanda and I were looking for some good hearty soup on a fall day for lunch. We are visiting family locally. The Common Man came up on Yelp! Glad it did. The building is a rare find with a ton of history. Our server, Gina, cued us in and was almost a historian of sorts. I ordered the Common Man Whiskey Sour and Amanda ordered a Sam Adams. Lunch was the French Onion Soup for Amanda and for me the Corn and Lobster chowder. We split the ABC turkey avocado bacon wrap. Everything was delicious. Came here fresh after arriving to Merrimack, NH and received a very friendly greeting as soon as we walked in. We were sat with Violet who was an absolute delight and helped break down the menu. We ordered the buffalo empanadas and sticky meatballs which I both highly recommend. For our entrees we had the smokehouse burgers which were a bit on the tougher side, but still tasty. We ordered the corn and lobster chowder which was delicious but my only complaint is there wasn't enough lobster. This was my first visit. Though I was at the main bar it seemed like it was well organized and food was dispatched quickly. It nice to seem that wait staff and manager ensure food gets out regardless of the server. Brittney was the bar tender and was very friendly and attentive to the 15ppl she had at the bar area. The item I ordered was very good. Plates could be warmed up as to not making the food cold minutes after arriving at the table. Considering this is NH in January with temperatures 10° outside I would think this would be a no-brainer. I am not sure what the do to make the bread so good but I am addicted. Overall this is a 2 thumbs up for me and I expect to return espl since my son and his Fam now lived a couple miles away. read more

My son wanted to find a local place that offered good clam chowder. He discovered this place and gave it a try. The staff were very friendly and were able to seat us a table right away. They told us about the free cheese and crackers offered before we sat down. The cheese was tasty but I didn't want to get too full before my entrees. The restaurant was decorated like the colonial days as the theme. The lobster clam chowder was made perfectly not watery. I enjoy the chunks of lobster added in to the chowder. The mussels we order were good. The sauce to it was ok. I had better sauce in other places. The not escargot was a different twist to it. Cooked like escargot but not escargot. Just cheese and mushrooms. A Great choice of a vegetarian dish. Overall we were happy and satisfied with our craving for the clam chowder dish. read more

Stopped in for date night. Used to frequent the restaurant when I lived in Merrimack 15 years ago and just moved back from Florida. Food is still great and the atmosphere is still as comfortable as I remembered. The service was decent and unremarkable. Will definitely return. read more

On this particular sunny New England afternoon, we decided to try lunch. Well....not *decided* so much as discovering they have a lunch menu; which is very different from their dinner menu. Translation: wifey and I came in for lobster pie, but settled for a pot roast and baked haddock, respectively. As you can probably guess, the lobster pie is a dinner only item. Lunch menu is smaller both in portions and size. After careful inspection, the wife and I decided the two most innocuous meals on the lunch menu were the pot roast and fish. Even though I ordered the haddock, I also got a chance to sample the pot roast and....DAYAMN! No, that's a good "damn" because that beef melted in my mouth like a peanut butter cup. Okay, that analogy didn't make any sense, but you know what I'm trying to say. Still, it was strange. The entire time, I kept wondering how on earth could a place that apparently can't make a decent prime rib.....somehow produce the metaphorical equivalent of gold in pot roast form. It boggles the mind! Be that as it may, we also have the baked haddock to consider. There's two versions, depending on which topping you prefer. I went with the Ritz cracker topping with lemon butter sauce. But it wasn't quite as...mmm....buttery as I expected. It also lacked seasoning. Almost as if they flavored the topping with unsalted butter. Otherwise, I'm not sure how a breadcrumb topping still comes out bland, despite using Ritz and butter. The haddock itself was phenomenal! Seasoning was just lacking a bit. 7 out of 10 for the fish, 9 out of 10 for the pot roast. Oh, each meal came with mashed potatoes and some kind of forgettable veggie, I suppose. And....you guessed it: potatoes needed more seasoning, too. Look, I realize restaurants mostly play it safe when it comes to this. But...*sigh*......guys.. One caveat to considering before entering here: they are understaffed. And it shows. On a half empty house, seating time was 20 minutes. The time to wait for refills on drinks? .... Don't ask. This isn't the first time we've visited a Common Man. The experience was similar though; just okay, nothing too extraordinary. I guess that's why they call it The COMMON...Man! Eh? Eeeeeh? :D Right. Jessie our server was great, provided lots of stories about the place, was extremely attentive and never made us feel rushed. We were lucky to be there on 1/2 price bottle night, so we shared a bottle of wine. I had the Pot Roast, wonderful comfort food. Wife had a fish dish and loved it. I was shocked at the bill. I've paid double at some restaurants for far less quality and serving. Next time we're up here, we'll be back to this place. Ask for Jessie when you go. I haven't been to a common man in decades and I can say I was impressed. Although this is not my go to style of cuisine, I thought The Common Man was still pleasant. They have a help yourself cheese and crackers section which is great. The taste was average as you'd expect but I like the fact it made you need to get up. Perfect for that moment when you're on a date and don't know what to ask so you get up to google some questions. I ended up ordering the Asian Bowl with Chicken which was a $6 up charge. In my opinion $6 for some grilled chicken is too much. I was told it was a spicy meal and maybe for some it could've been but for me it was not. Good flavors nonetheless. My wife and I absolutely love it here! As regulars for the past 14 years, we dined twice this week including today for St Pattys day. The maple sausage and butternut ravioli special on Thursday was absolutely amazing. My wife even ordered another one to go for her lunch the next day. We also had the pleasure of having Jesse both visits who is an amazing waiter. From his charming personality to his attentiveness and service, he is just great!! I'd also like to the point out that the corned beef dinner was the best I have had in my 52 year life. From the flavor to the tenderness, it was just perfect! Chef Joe is a very talented young man! We got to chat with him as he was grabbing water on our way out, he even let us in on his recipe to try at home! Side note: We also want to say how great the manager Jen is, she is always so pleasant and makes us feel so welcomed. We love seeing her. Overall, we love the Common Man, from the food to the people. Pros: really cool restaurant. The food was good with some really nice home style dishes that are different from other places. We were there on the night of August the 12th and the guy that was at the upstairs bar grill area was amazing. He kept chatting with us and made my friend loaded fries when the server said he may not be able to so we appreciate his work! The manager (I think his name was Mike) came and checked on us. I always appreciate a manager that is on the floor and helping. Cons: service was just a tad off but our server did have a bunch of tables so I definitely won't take off stars for that. I'm very surprised by the low reviews here, I've come a couple times for dinner recently and have not been disappointed! I've had the quinoa stuffed peppers and the ravioli with blackened chicken. Both were delish and gave me enough for leftovers. Their meals can be a little pricey here, $18 average for dinner. But they all come with cheese and crackers, rolls and white chocolate bread yum and shaved white chocolate for dessert! They make it fresh in house. They do have beer and sangria happy hour specials as well as half off wine bottles on Wednesday's. If you like history, this place is known to be haunted with the original owner buried across the street. It was also thought to be a part of the Underground Railroad. read more

What was once an extraordinary place for a country vibe and good food has become tired and clearly not managing to its once excellent standards. We are in the second floor lounge/pub area (19 Dec 22) A lone bar tender and server covered the entire space - no bar back or help waiting tables. Glasses pulled up on the bar, and would eventually fall over breaking glass and sending shards into patrons food at the bar. We waited a long time to order drinks, and then our drinks sat at the bar for 10 minutes before the bar tender bright then to our table. The guests seated at the table next to us complained about cold food. Our appetizer arrived after getting our main dish. The food was good, but average. Arancini over cooked. Steak tips grayish in color rather than grilled well. Cobb salad tasty but fish salmon cold. Hopefully, this is a wake up call. Let's get some good management in place. read more

Wife read about this restaurant so we decided to check it out. Loaded the kids in the car, masked up, and drove down for a late lunch. Usually I do an expansive review with pictures and what not but I won't this time. We were promptly and courteously seated and our drink orders were taken and delivered. Ordered two cups of soup (as apps - Lobster Corn Chowder and the Soup of the Day) a side of chicken for our toddler, kids pizza for the older kid, Waldorf Wrap and a Common Man burger. The soups were OK. Not bad. I thought the soup of the day could have used some more salt and pepper, but I think everything could use more salt and pepper. Wife thought the Lobster Corn Chowder was a good deal ($7.99) for the amount of giant lobster meat chunk that was placed in the middle of the chowder - could have used some more corn and vegetables. We ordered the food and the main course took over 30 minutes for the food to hit our table - I honestly don't know why the kids pizza, a burger and a rap should take well north of 30 minutes to come out. Beer selection was slim - Common Man Ale was decent, though. Ordered the burger cooked medium rare, came out without a single spot of pink. It's whatever, but don't ask how I'd like a burger cooked if you're going to bring it out well done no matter what. The sides (home made fries and fresh potato salad were both pretty good, both needed a bit more seasoning) were better than expected. Hamburger was fine, bun was good. Wife said wrap was as expected leaning towards good. The pizza looked good but the sauce was ratchet (my kid are it but I think it would have been an improvement to just use some Rao's spaghetti sauce straight out of the can). I think the wait staff was spread thin - our waitress covered a large section inside as well as outdoor seating - I only saw two waitresses while there. Burger came out with no condiments and I asked for some and she forgot about them until she saw me staring at her, expectantly. Annoying but understandable. Just disappointing. The best part of the visit was the ambiance of the building itself - nice converted barn motif, and the outdoor seating looked great in the outdoors. Wife thought 2.5 stars but I think the polite staff edged it to 3 stars. If you're looking for a cool experience give it a shot but don't plant on making it a regular occurrence. read more

The wife and I were more than satisfied for less that 60.00. We have gone to bars and had much, spent way more and was not nearly as satisfied. Fantastic place. Food was AMAZING. Two of us had the Cobb Salad with chicken and although huge, was so delicious we both ate the whole thing! I had a lovely Hot and Dirty Martini. If I had to complain about anything, the AC was set to 69 which had us all running to the car for sweatshirts in August.
