A friend had two 2 for 1 tickets for $29.99 to the Comedy Cave for the new year which included dinner and the show. It was not our first time and we had went two times before about 8 years ago. I knew the headliners were generally hilarious but I had forgotten how the food was. Four of us went on a Wednesday night and made reservations for 7:15. The restaurant is attached to the Travelodge on the north side. The menu is nothing special: standard pub appetizers like nachos, poutine, fries and garden/Caesar salads. Their entrées included ribs, teriyaki salmon, chicken with lemon sauce, ravioli and a burger. The entire dining room had only one server who was actually quite attentive. She came by our table a few times to refill our drinks and gave us our bill right after the show. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, lower your expectations for the food and you won't be disappointed. It's standard pub food. Our tickets included either one of the salads and all of us got the Caesar salad. The entrées came out lukewarm and the portions weren't huge. They did come out pretty quick. The food was unremarkable and the "ravioli" Alfredo came out as cheese baked tortellini. Each of us ordered a different entrée but none of us were overly impressed but weren't disappointed. After all, I DID mention expectations for the food were low. I would've given one or no stars for the food, but I gave three stars overall to Comedy Cave because their headliners are freaking funny. The headliners at Blackfoot Hotel are nowhere near as funny as the ones at Comedy Cave. The host looked exactly as he described himself: The secret love child of Jim Carrey and Justin Bieber. The other openers weren't as funny and the crowd was tough. I'm glad Paul Ogata was the headliner for the show because he was freaking hilarious. We were overall impressed with the show but the food leaves some thing to be desired. I would eat dinner elsewhere and go for the show, regardless of the minimum beverage charge. read more

The host, warm up act, and the headliner's sets were all ruined by this intoxicated couple that showed up late and heckled the entire act. Management decided liquor sales were more important than the show, the people who showed up, and the comedian's safety as the guy in the couple threatened him and the manager let them stay. They should have been kicked out after 5 minutes of them being there. Not one performer could get to their punchline because the female kept sharing her own stories and making comments on how the comedians can do better every 30 seconds. Everyone in the audience was frustrated and one guy even left. The most upsetting part of the night was when the boyfriend threatened the headliner while he was on stage. This man did the hand to eye signal to the headliner as he was leaving as if to say watch your back. Once this couple finally left everyone started clapping. The manager then brought the woman back to her seat (in the front row) and poured her wine glass to the brim even though she was very obviously intoxicated. The headliner even said 'wait, she's watching the rest of the show?' The manager then said 'yes her boyfriend is in his car and is not coming back'. When we left the show, we saw her boyfriend at the bar next door... The manager obviously didn't care about the performer's safety. ***I've emailed the club about this twice and no one got back to me (it's been weeks) so this will obviously keep happening. Located at the base of Travelodge by 90th ave of Macleod Trail is the Comedy Cave. The place is pretty dark on the inside and has the same brick backdrop as you see at other comedy places but this one is Faux Brick! hehe. Is there a comedy code that says you can only tell jokes in front of a brick (or faux brick) wall?! haha. Well, I got free tickets from work and so I ended up going twice! 2nd time was more enjoyable. How much fun you have really depends on the entertainment and the crowd that happens to be there that night. 2nd time had a funnier line up and also more people and bigger groups = more interactive = more fun :) They have a host who tells a few jokes, then a starter comedian who tells more jokes and hopefully warms up the crowd before the main line up comes on. Inside is super dark (as to be expected) and pretty casual. There's only one waitress but she was attentive throughout the night. Food is usual bar/lounge food e.g. burger, fries, wings, etc... and they have a full bar. I shared the appetizer platter both times ($20 for the platter). With the free tickets there's a minimum $7.50 pp order but they're pretty flexible, as long as you order a drink or some food you're good. One thing I thought was strange was they don't really let you loiter much.. once the show is done... it's lights out! No more drinks, no more food, the place just closes down. You know those tickets you get to the Comedy Cave that magically appear in your mailbox at work? Yeah we get those all the time. Finally got around to using them. Group of 4 of us went out to take in dinner and a show. The tickets we have allowed 2-for-1 and included the show price. That wasn't extra. Unlike some other comments we had no issue with any extra charges. As we went the Sunday following New Years it was quiet so not sure how busy they normally are. We had also reserved seats in advance. Good view of the stage. Food wise - it is what it is. Please don't expect anything grand and there will be no disappointment - think just ok pub food and you'll be fine. Not terrible, not great, but I would eat it again. All had ceaser salad to start which was tasty and lettuce had crunch. 2 people had the cheese + bacon burgers which admittedly had the smallest single half slice of bacon on, no complaints. One guy had the salmon, said it was much better than it looked, liked the rice and veg. I had the ribs which had a good sauce but had been cooked slightly too long so were a little chewy in places. But also not bad. Service wasn't bad, one server for the whole place. If it was packed I could see it being really hard to get a drink. If you go on a popular night recommend ordering straight away and maybe getting a couple rounds of drinks. Sure bottles would help speed it up to as only one surly bartender on shift too. If you get there late, the lights go down as soon as the acts come one the stage so you will be eating in the dark. Comedy wise - the host is just ok. Someone mentioned his Simpson jokes, and he still does those. Felt like he was doing the same routine he normally does to me. 2 people at our table had been before and said the hosts routine was a little different - but the second guys routine was exactly the same and just as bad as the first time they say it in early Nov 2015. And it was bad. Now the main act - PAUL OGATA - was worth every cent spend and he did a great show. Had us laughing the whole way through and would see him again. You can look up the calendar of events on their website to see who is playing when. Recommend it if you would like to check out their acts before you go, or just role the dice and take a chance. Four of us Thursday night Nov 30 2017 paid $16.95 each for a cold dried out hamburger & a handful of fries, no mayo or relish only mustard & ketchup. This new location not great parking. All comedians were awful & only 12 of us in the audience. Waitress was friendly but anxious to keep the change when we paid cash. Never again, worst show, food ever. Oh ma gawwd! You're tank is so huge you'd have to step sideways just to fit through the door. Have you seen the toilet tanks in the ladies washroom? I swear they're a double wide! And I think the air freshener smells like bubble gum. Odd choice for a washroom. Comedy Cave has been around C-town for the last decade or so. I remember getting free passes dropped off at an office I used to work at. That's what used to get me through the door. The thing about any entertainment spot, whether it be comedy, music, performing arts or other, is that the experience is only as good as the act on the stage. Catch a comedian on a bad night (or just a bad comedian), and the rest of the building doesn't really matter. It's not like you came for the food in the first place. Lucky for us, we had a funny comedian on a good night. The rest of the Comedy Cave favours having a pretty decent time once you've got the comedy bit all ironed out. Rows of tables, a full bar at the back, and standard menu fare... like chicken fingers, wings, onion rings, poutine, burgers and the like. And at pretty cheap prices. I don't think anything on the menu was more than $12.95. We shared an appy platter (wings, some veggies, onion rings, chicken fingers and ribs) between 5 of us. If you're hungry, order more. I love stand-up comedy and have been to many dozens of shows in Calgary. The Comedy Cave disappoints for several reasons. I think the venue is terrible. The space seems cramped with cheap furnishings and if you're seated in the back left corner of the room (which I have been), you basically have a large pole blocking the view of the stage. Of course they try to help you out by putting a small, ugly TV nearby so you can watch the show on that if you can't actually see it. How absurd. I didn't drive there to watch TV. I hate to say it, but I have never been entertained by the host. Ever. And the staff doesn't appear to be very happy to serve you. Yes, I've had a few laughs, but unless you have free admission, it's not worth the money for such a drab environment and dealing with the pain of watching headliner predecessors who struggle to be witty. read more

The worst customer service I've ever had in my life. I'm glad the comedians were good because we would have left otherwise... in fact, other people did get up and leave. There was probably 150 people? It was full. There was one bartender who was also seating people and delivering food and he was slower than molasses in January. There were two waitresses and it was only the 2nd day on the job for the one. I can't blame her for all that went wrong - it seems nothing worked well at all. It was very obvious however that the new waitress had no idea about anything. She kept getting all the table numbers mixed up, along with the orders. She was finally taken away from taking any orders so there was only one waitress taking orders for the entire place! We ordered our food and drinks at the same time, about 10 minutes after being seated. It took 40 minutes for our caesar salad to come, with no drinks yet. Our drinks came 5 minutes later after we bugged a waitress about it. The sad thing, is that we saw the drinks were made only just before they were served - 45 minutes to make a rye & coke and a caesar? And... there was no coke in the rye & coke. The main entrees came 15 minutes after our salads.. not bad. The food was decent for a cheap comedy club. The caesar salad was decent, and I've had a worse hamburger. The sweet potato fries were overcooked and cold. Oh well. The poor people beside us - they got their salads 1.5 hours after ordering! They didn't get their entrees until 8:35 - when the lights were out and the comedians had started. There was absolutely no chance to place any 2nd orders for drinks until just before the comedians started when the waitress who was 'allowed' to take orders made her way around the room. Sadly, I will not go back. If they want to make any money on booze, they have to provide the service. They need more waitresses, servers, and 2 bartenders (or one effective one). In one of the rare cases where the name actually describes the place, the comedy cave is basically just that: A dark little hole-in-the-wall where comedians congregate to tell you funny jokes. Also, you get dinner! We had more of an adventure actually finding the place than being in it, though that was more due to our driver's navigational skills than the directions. This place is deep south. Deep, deep south... We arrived just in time for the doors to open, and they weren't letting anybody in early, so there was a bunch of people standing outside. The inside was very dark and a little old fashioned, with deep velvets everywhere - definitely a hole. We had reservations, thank god, so we were given good seats really close to the stage. They took our drink and dinner orders before the show started - my friend had some kind of coupon for a group dinner rate with ribs, beans and fries. It was surprisingly decent. The show itself varied from moderately haha to laugh out loud funny, but it never really hit its stride. There was the local MC, who was alright, followed by a pretty funny warm up guy. Then some guy who has been on the comedy network! I don't remember his name, though he was pretty cute. He was funny when he hit his stride, but he was doing the show that night with a friend who was a little less so... But he was on TV! So it must have been good. I have been here a couple of times now so I feel comfortable in saying that this is a solid comedy club. I have enjoyed the comics and the drinks, and each night has been a good time. I have gotten some of the food and it's edible. As I have said in other reviews, I firmly believe in judging a spade only as a spade, and to me a comedy club should be judged on the diversity and quality of its comic and that's about it. I have never gone to a club for its menu, service, or ambience. In fact, I except clubs to be dingy, to have mediocre food, and to serve decent drinks, at best. So with that in mind, I think this is a 4-star comedy club. For instance, the Punch Line in Atlanta is a famous comedy club. Many comics, such as Patton Oswald, have performed their numerous times in their career. On a good day it looks like its fighting off a mold infestation. However, its a wonderful place and I'll go time and again. Anyway, this place is dark and in the basement of a dingy hotel. There is ample parking. You can buy well drinks for about $7 and $1 more gets you slightly better liquor. The food menu is basic but edible. If you're looking for fine dining, maybe you should try someplace in the area and *then* come to the Comedy Cave. The service is also just ok - I don't think I have seen more than two wait staff at any given time. I would definitely check out their website as they list the comics that are coming up. You can watch their videos and see who you like. I think it makes the experience better if you actually enjoy the comedy. :-) or you can roll the dice - its $10 per ticket (and $5 some nights) so it's a great way to get out of the house for less than the cost of a movie. read more

I really hate seeing negative reviews for places I love to hang out. It makes me wonder what people were expecting. With that being said, I understand different strokes for different folks. If you're looking for a cheap entertaining night, the Comedy Cave is for you. It IS a hole in the wall, but that is definitely by design. Is the food great? Not particularily but it's no worse than any pub food you'll find. I too have found the service below average, but I don't go to a comedy club for 5 star service. Do I get the food and drinks I order? You betcha. That's good enough for me. And as for those saying the staff aren't inviting and nice, I have NEVER experienced that. My hubby and I went to the 7:30 show may 28th 2018. You really get what you pay for our MC was funnier than the both of the other comedians, and when I say funnier I mean I laughed maybe 8 times... I was very disappointed in how the comedians talked to each other one the side line so I couldn't hear the person on stage, there were no drink specials and a waitresses didn't give out bills until the very end so everyone was in a massive line . 10 of us arrived when the doors opened at 630 to celebrate a birthday.Service for drinks was very slow and our server also told us she can only take orders for 4 people at a time or she wouldn't rememeber (pen and paper????) 6 out of the group of 10 had dinner served at a reasonable time and the remaining 4 including the birthday girl waiting over 2 hours. Finally dinner arrived half way through the main act with no apology from the server. The Comedy Cave is quirky place with some very strange rules. Some of these rules really turn people off, but it's all part of the package. The Comedy Cave is an important part of Calgary's comedy scene because it is one of those places that helps LOCAL comics get their start. It is also where some comics get their last chance. Nobody considers the Cave to be an A-List venue, but it's still an important venue and I am happy to have been a customer for far longer than I can remember. I think this really deserves a three and a half. We went with a large group (12+), and when making the phone reservations they told us that we had to be 45 minutes early or risk having or seats given up. We got there, and the door was locked. Anyways, we were seated, and it took the waitresses - there are only 2 in the entire place - 20 minutes to get half of our group served with drinks only. The other half of the table were randomly skipped by her, and had to wait an additional 15 minutes. The service there is probably the worst I've had in any city (I've been to many cities) in any country, EVER! Terrible. Awful. She even spilt water on my gf and I, and when we looked up to see where it had come from, she said, 'It's only water' in a snotty voice, as if we had complained! The saving grace of this place, is the actual acts that perform here. Consistently the headliner is always super funny, the opening act is pretty good, and the local guy who hosts, is good, except he reuses his jokes a lot. I've been here 3 times, and do comeback. The venue itself is ridiculous. It's an old convention hall in the basement of some hotel. It's stupid. They use 5ft high cloth partitions to box us off from the remaining third of the convention hall. The stage also has the obligatory fake brick behind the stage. I would normally bemoan such half assed interior design, but this is a comedy club, so this kind of set up just makes me laugh. Most importantly.... the comedians are hardcore, they are not the family friendly types, although they have some pretty raunchy comedians also doing the sunday afternoon family friendly set. I haven't seen it, though. Regardless, I love this place. And to make it even funnier, they have a newfie bar on top where you can hear them line dance from above. It's yet another hilarious example of the half-assedness. The ribs aren't that good, but by Calgary standards, they would pass. Regardless, I come here to watch comedians, not eat. I've had a chance to visit this place a few times. Like others mentioned, the name is pretty descriptive. It is a small dungeon-ey dark little place, but let's keep things in perspective here... it's a comedy club, not a performance theatre, and for the price you pay for tickets, it's really a great deal for an evening of entertainment. Food is not the best I ever tasted, but it was all right. Again, keeping things in perspective, the servers have to push food out to about 100-200 people in a really short amount of time, so keep that in mind when you're ordering. I would suggest ordering sooner rather then later. As for the acts, it really depends on who's headlining that evening but the host is hilarious and acts I've seen were funny. The waitress and manager were extremely rude and the vib there was dark and depressing. Do not go there. the following is a recount of my service here at the Comedy Cave. I am not making any allegations only stating what happened and the service I received at the establishment: I came with a free ticket to see the show with a couple friends. I asked the waitress if this was a free ticket to see the show I asked the bar tender if this ticket was valid to see the show, they both said yes. I asked about how this club works and the waitress told me "if you don't have a ticket its 10$ to see the show" by the waitress. I ordered a water and the owner came and took my ticket, I enjoyed the show, it was great we all laughed. All of a sudden a bill came to my table for 20$+ ontop of any food or drink charges. I said that I had a ticket and what was the bill for? The owner then said theres a minimum charge per person and I asked "how come I was not told about this?" I said "I will not pay for a charge I was not made aware of". The owner then locked the front door and held everyone captive. He told me that he was going to punch me in the face. Eventually he opened the door because there was a lot of people who wanted to leave , so I shoved him out of the way and exited, then he yelled "F*$K OFF AND NEVER COME BACK". I will never be back and my friend said the burger here was horrible he only ate it because he was starving. read more

Went to The Comedy Cave for the early show on a Friday night. We had dinner and drinks a bit before and during the show. The food was fine, regular pub style food. Drink menu was good and the waitress was friendly, chatty and attentive. She did a great job and took care of our table well. The comedians were pretty good, kudos to the headliner that night Matt Fulchiron. He was current, entertaining and didn't trash anyone too badly... audience had a good time. :) read more

I love comedy shows, and this place makes me depressed. I don't go in with high standards, I've been in quite the comedy club dives, but this other can the comedians this place blows. Other than the fact that we always get free admission coupons, I would NEVER go back. They actually have a 2 drink minimum - good luck getting even ONE. I've have about 3 of the servers there and they all suck, they forget, they don't bring stuff, they never ever see if you want another drink. Last time I sat through an hour and a half and not one person came over. I don't need 5* service but I'm here to watch the show, I shouldn't have to not listen to 5 minutes because I need to track down my own drink every 20-30 mins because the servers can't do their job. I've never been to a comedy place where they DON'T want to you to drink. Not just alcohol either, they can't even bring water. We've asked at least 3 times for a glass of water and the girl never brought it. The food is also bad, overpriced, and small portions (rock hard chicken fingers, anyone?) I'm not sure if that's their policy to leave customers alone once the show starts or what but it's silly. Any other comedy place I've been to, the servers know how to be discreet and still check your drinks/food, and they come as often as you drink them because they want that money. The comedians they get have always been funny, though, so I'll give them one extra star. Too bad the service makes the experience bad, disappointing, and overall frustrating. read more

We had an awesome time. Very affordable compared to other comedy clubs in Calgary. Drinks and food were delicious and reasonably priced. The show to get in was $10 pp and registering on the website was the best way to get a great seat and also see a you-tube video of what the comedian will be like. Great night out with the girlfriend. I love how it has an 80's look to it. funny club with good service

Disgusting place, very dirty, the staff are very rude and the comedians were trying very hard to make the crowd laugh. My partner and I received free tickets for an 8pm show last week and we decided to drop in after dinner. After the show was finished we decided to leave, however we were told we weren't allowed to leave unless we paid our bill. My partner explained we had no bill as we just came to see the show with our free tickets. The man explained there was a $7.50 compulsory charge per person and we would not be allowed to leave until we paid. My boyfriend was physically held back by two men and verbally abused, one which appeared to be the owner, finally we were able to run off before either of the employees at the Comedy Cave could physically harm us. I have never been to a comedy show like this before, I was so fearful by the end. read more

I would love to give this place three or four stars as the comedians they had were hilarious, but I just can't justify it on the grounds that the food and service were excruciating. My fiancee and I had a four course meal which started off with side salad so small that I almost didn't see it in the dark. Next was the main course. It was a bacon cheeseburger of some kind and it was okay but nothing special. I've certainly had better. The sweet potato fries on the side, however, were almost inedible. They were greasy, hard and cold. I have no idea what they looked like which amounts only to saying that I am not a cat, as this place certainly had the visual milieu of a real cave. Dessert came next. We both had the German chocolate cake. I'm not sure if it has that title because they had to go to Germany to get it, (the wait is certainly suggestive of this,) but it definitely was not a proper German chocolate cake. We went back a couple days later, despite the horrendous food the first night. We asked for drinks but didn't get them for a full hour. Meanwhile, the table next to us only recently occupied received a table full of beers. When we finally saw our server and asked where our drinks were, her reply was that it was busy at the bar. Maybe understandable except that we had ordered beers too! The second night we waited over an hour for our main course. When it finally arrived it was okay, but nothing to write home about. We got dessert what felt like hours later. I had an apple pie. It was actually frozen in the middle. I'd have sent it back but I didn't have a clue how to get our server's attention. read more

I was hesitant about this place after all the fairly poor reviews posted however a group of us went tonight and had a great time. The headliner was super funny. The food was good pub style cuisine. It may have taken a bit for the kitchen to keep up with the orders but felt it was paced nicely. The servers were quite attentive for being the only two on the floor. Horrible experience was sat down with our party of four waited twenty minutes for a drink only to be told that we had to move to be behind a pillar told to watch a Terrible quality TV to view the show because they had the area booked despite No reservation sign and we were seated by the staff, the owner forced the waitress to move us they fought in front of us and then the owner said if we didn't like it tough but would give us tickets for future show We ended up leaving before the show started as the manager rude to use was abusive to his staff in front of us and put zero respect to us when telling us we had to sit behind a pillar and tough luck about the seats. read more

Went here for the dinner special that was offered with the hotel. This place definitely needs a facelift. The server was attentive but not very knowledgeable. Only have bottled beer would love to enjoy a pitcher with a show but that's not an option. The act was pretty decent. My girlfriend's husband, the father of two amazing sons fought this disease for four years and succumbed at age 45. He had a truly horrific end. I'm glad that my friend fought to have boys across Alberta vaccinated for HPV and so SAD that comedians like Matt "the drummer" think they are funny when they make light of it. Friends and I went here last Tuesday. The comedy was good! But the service wasn't the greatest. It took a long time before we got asked if we wanted another drink and our food look a very long time. Which I'm pretty sure our food got taken to the wrong take.. read more
