My husband had a burger and fries. The dill dipping sauce that was served with it was great for the fries. My son had a French dip with fries. He said it was good. Had lunch there today. Shared a few appies with a friend. The chicken fingers were burnt to a crisp. Not even edible. The server never came back after food was delivered to check on us, which was surprising because it was not busy. When she came back to table it was too late for us to send back, as our lunch break as over. We told her the chicken fingers were burnt and sent them all back except for 1. She never took them off the bill or offered to take them off the bill. we paid full price for something we could not eat. That was my last chance for State and Main - last time I was there the server did not know how to split our bill and I ended up paying for the whole table. read more

We stopped into this location during our drive from Edmonton to Banff. It was happy hour and we were able to try out a few dishes to share. These were all happy hour specials. The lettuce wraps were so tasty and well balanced. The truffle park chips were so crunchy and yummy. The portion was huge. Brussel sprouts were savoury. Crispy bacon was perfect with it. I didn't love the spicy tuna bowl, but my husband enjoyed it. Lots of drinks on special. I had wanted red wine, but was given white. I didn't say anything because I tried a sip and it was quite delightful. It's a nice location and wasn't too busy when we went in the daytime. I would likely return again. read more

The food was really good! The bacon tomato soup was great and the waitress was friendly.

The service here was the best part of my experience, so for those who like personable, engaged, attentive servers, this is a good spot for you. Unfortunately, the food was pretty mediocre. Definitely not bad, but not remarkable in any way. I had the beef dip with fries & gravy, and also started with their tomato bacon soup. Now, the soup was probably the best part of the meal: very tasty, though not particularly large in size. Well, I ate it all and scooped out the dregs from the bottom of the small cup. And it was good. But then the main dish arrived, and I was a little surprised: the sandwich part was okay, I guess, but the beef was like shoe leather. The bun wasn't fresh, but definitely not stale, either. This would have been okay if the aus jus wasn't so weak and watery. It went from a 4-star sandwich to a 2 or 3-star sandwich. Fries were good. But the gravy was in a tiny little vessel. I had to drag the fries through it to get the last few drops. Could've been a little larger, for sure. So, in short, some good parts to my dinner, some very mediocre parts as well. Again, though, the people serving me were great. The meagre ambiance was greatly enhanced by their attentiveness and friendliness. So ... I'm left with an experience that was satisfying enough, but won't compel me to return anytime soon. I ordered one order of jalapeño macaroni with bacon for pick up last Saturday afternoon. When I got home I realized that there was no jalapeño and no panko, just macaroni and bacon. I called the Nolan Hill location to report this and arrange to pick up a replacement order but had to leave a message as nobody answered the phone. Their voicemail states that if you want to talk to someone to call back and speak to someone (?) however nobody answers the phone at this location. Their voicemail also states that it is checked daily but it's been a week and I have not received a call back about my order. They don't seem to care about customer service at all! read more

I have been here once before and decided to give it another try as the service was friendly and the food was fairly decent in both taste and pricing. We were able to walk right in at 6:00 with no reservation though it is handy to be able to see the live wait time on Yelp to be able to time your visits. State and Main is a pub style restaurant with a bar and plenty of sports screens and booths and tables for families. Parking can be a bit tight as it shares the space with other businesses. Our server was courteous and the food was good, nothing to right home about. Bottom line: I will be a returning customer but I am in no rush to do so just yet. read more

We tried the restaurant on a Friday night at 6:45. We usually avoid Fridays because they are so busy, but we made a reservation and didn't have to wait for a table. We were seated at the front of the restaurant near a serving station and close to the entrance. I hated our table and the ambience. It felt like we were in a cheap diner with zero comfort or design features. Most of the people around us were younger with small children, so it didn't feel very sophisticated - more like a playroom - and not very "pub-ish" Our server was great, but very busy, so a bit distracted. My husband ordered the calamari appetizer. There was a sauce drizzle and lots of seasoning on it, but it still wasn't very tasty. There were deep fried jalapeños as well - so watch out if you are sensitive to spice or peppers. He followed up with fish (haddock) and chips. The portion of fish was huge, but he said the batter had a burnt taste to it and he didn't love it. I ordered a steak salad, with blue cheese dressing. Again, the portions were large, but the steak had no flavour, and the salad "dressing" was tasteless. Weirdly, even the blue cheese crumbles didn't have a lot of flavour, and usually blue cheese is pretty intense (?) There were a lot of greens, but little else (skimpy with the tomatoes, etc.) The steak was the worst. I could only eat half of it. I literally choked on it. The cook had cut it with the grain and it was gristly, so even though I would chew and chew I still had to choke it down. We took a look around before we left, and the atmosphere didn't seem great in the rest of the restaurant. I don't think we'll be back. Very disappointing. The servers Always stand around gossiping and I think the manager, tall blonde, has the most annoying laugh, it echoes throughout the restaurant, especially after her shift when she drinks at the bar. Doesn't make your dinner very enjoyable. Also, the conversations at the bar and the language used when all the servers gather after shifts is pretty nauseating. All they do is trash talk other staff members and swear. Don't come here if you want to listen to trash mouths and irritating laughs. Go somewhere else if you want to enjoy your night out. read more

I used to order delivery from them but as I noticed the quality of food decrease I quickly stopped spending my money here. Orders can be put together very sloppy and with poor portion sizes, so if you're going to eat here I would recommend sitting in the restaurant so that you don't end up paying $13 for a salad that has been poorly made in comparison to the first time you've had it, that way you can point it out to your server rather than just having to suck it up like I had to when I ordered from them using skip the dishes! Quality of food should be maintained and not go down just because someone tips you in advance. I was there for lunch today and had the fish and chips, It was one large piece of home made golden brown heaven, it was crunchy on the outside and fresh, tender, flakey and delicious. On the inside. There tarter sauce was homemade with a dill and a bit of heat there to warm your pallet, the fries were great and seasoned perfectly. The service from the moment we walked in was a warm welcome prompted seating and great service will defiantly go back and can't wait to try the rest of the menu. Server is always super nice and we come here often. Ordered the burrito bowl and asked if I could get it with no chicken because we started with a fried chicken starter. We got our bill and it turns out that the burrito bowl is $16 with or without chicken. It was delicious, but I don't believe a bowl of rice with 6 corn kernels 4 beans and some guacamole should be the same price as it would be with a chicken breast. Im not cheap - I ordered a 10 dollar cocktail during happy hour so the money isn't the issue. I'm writing this because I work in the industry myself and was kinda pissed and it's more just the principle. had I known, I would have ordered something else or got the chicken lol. I ordered some vegetables because I'm vegan. All I was offered was steamed by the server. I got a small portion with no seasoning. When I requested some seasoning, some sauce was dribbled very lightly on top. The kitchen couldn't even put on enough or stir the vegetables to save the dish. Very disappointed. read more

Really enjoy this place. Great location for me about 4 blocks from home. Have been 4 times since they opened and every time has been great. Friendly efficient service and great good. Also reasonably priced. I enjoy the table set up in the lounge side as it encourages interaction with the people around you. Overall I recommend everyone give it a shot. read more

I went to the State & Main Nolan hill location. Normal it good. Yes we got an appie and they where good. There was 2 of us together. We both ordered a steak sandwich. My steak sandwich was smaller in length but it probably weighs the same. As I looked more I noticed a that some of the brush was on my steak. And my fries were under cooked and cold. Got a waitresses not own and took it away. Got a new one but they never told me they were coming too. Until I asked what they were doing about it. They did take my steak sandwich off the bill. The waitress was sorry for that but no manager came over to say something. I have work in restaurants all my life and never had a manager not come over yo say sorry. We did come when it was slow but by the time we left it was busy. I feel like it a hit and miss with this location on when, what and where. I have been to different location and have had better experiences all around. Is it because it is one of the newer location. This restaurant is amazing! It is so close to where I live and I go there every month! You have to try their burgers. The burgers are on a delicious brioche bun. The steak is also five star. I Iike that they included a bit of jalapeño to the mashed potatoes to give it a little kick. And you have to try the dirt pie for desert! I'd recommend coming here for great family fun! read more

I went here a few weeks ago and although the services was good, the food was probably the worst meal I have ever had at a restaurant. I ordered a noodle bowl, and the chicken in it tasted like it had been cooked with no seasoning at all, frozen and then defrosted and used in my meal. I could not even eat it, and I am not a picky eater. The broth was also very salty and just did not taste good at all, it separated into two parts when I hadn't touched the food in a bit making me wonder what it was made with. This is not worth the cheap prices and the fact that it isn't very busy. I have come here before and thought it might have just been a bad night, but after this last time, I cannot recommend to avoid this place enough. read more

Overall I like this place, great neighbourhood hangout, nice patio, trendy interior design inside, music isn't too loud, the bathrooms are individual rooms with locking doors which is a nice upgrade from stalls. I work at the Sobeys in the Nolan Hill location, I come to State and Main for lunch sometimes and the odd drinks after work. I'm going to start just coming for the drink after work, because the day bartender is extremely unfriendly, and lacks enthusiasm for her work. I have heard her talk down about work and her fellow employees several time. This is not what I want to hear during my lunch break, and I think I will stick to having drinks in the lounge in the evenings after work. This is by far one of my favourite restaurants in Calgary, I've been to this location multiple times and the food is always delicious. I've tried several different items on the menu and they never disappoint. The only thing I would change are the fries, at the State and Main location in Lethbridge the fries are better (thin and crispy - here they are a bit softer and thicker). The staff are really friendly and the tables are nice and clean. Both the bar side and the dining side are a really great atmosphere. read more
