I haven't been to The Palamino in so long, but it was worth the wait. This was my fourth time to the restaurant. The Palamino is a rustic BBQ smokehouse located in downtown Calgary, near the Calgary Tower. They offer a variety of starters, such as burnt ends, wings, nachos, to name a few. The mains include traditional smoked meats, such as brisket, pork, turkey, ribs and sausage. They also offer handheld burgers and sandwiches. Brunch is also served at Palamino!! My travel companion had a pulled pork sandwich. I had the two meat plate - I took smoked turkey and beef brisket. We both had Caesar salad and fries. Palamino has a variety of homemade BBQ sauces. Alcohol is served, such as beer, which goes well with barbecue dishes. Service was fast and friendly!! The ambiance is very special at Palamino, but a great place to eat foods and have a drink, be with friends, or your significant other / family. read more

This place was right across from our hotel so we decided to try it. So glad we did. At first I was a little unsure with the decor, but the host was there greeting us a soon as we walked in. Our server, Amy, was amazing.!! She was so quick and knowledgeable. She helped us decide on our choices and made recommendations. We had an appy -- street corn ribs. 5 stars no notes. Order these. Yum. A 2 meat platter and 2 sides.. Brisket, excellent fresh tender fall apart. A spolumbo sausage- this has some heat to it but delicious. We did the sweet potato / regular potato mash mix - why is this not more common it was divine what a nice combo why more interesting than regular mash. And the Kentucky bourbon apples, again how unusual but so very good. We had the strawberry shortcake with lemon curd and smoked strawberry compote. It was fresh and light and delightful. So I came here for work and I was excited as I had never been to this city but wouldn't you know it a whole blizzard came the day prior and left feet of snow behind. So this place was highly recommended and just across the block from my hotel so off we go. Entry was truly that of a bbq restaurant. No fancy chandeliers or table cloth set tables but wood and metal with lots of cool art and artifacts to decorate the place. I sat at the bar since I was alone and the bar tender was very friendly to me. She whipped up a lovely old fashion and gave me a run down on some best sellers then I just went for it and said yes I want that. The bbq ribs, smoked chicken, and brisket. An ambitious dinner for an athletic appetite and I was not ashamed because guess what, there was nothing leftover nor a need for a to go box. On the side I just had to try the bacon wrapped corn because it had bacon. The corn was buttered and seasoned and I just would love some more of this because making it at home was not the same. The meats were tender and dry rubbed. I tend to be a fan of dry rubbed and smoked meats so this was more than welcomed. What I should have tried, if they have it, was smoked wings. I can't remember if they do but my optimism says yes. The larger bathrooms are down where there seems to be a band space for hosting live music and more seating etc. As expected with the snow there was no band this day but the ambience seems pretty chill and nice to kick back with beer and barbecue to let your hair down a bit. read more

Tolerable but extremely overpriced for poorly done food against tradition and taste. My warm ceaser salad with giant cloves of garlic and whatever other garbage was added to it was sad and confusing. The place looks like a dive, the food is not that tasty and the experience was very disappointing. Service was a bit slow on a Monday evening. Servers were still nice and attentive. Ordered full orders of the brisket, ribs and pulled pork along with burnt ends, Mac and cheese, and deep fried pickles. For sides, we tried the bacon wrapped corn, boring fries, garlic fries, Yukon mash and macaroni salad. This was for a party of 6 at 6pm on Monday. The brisket was dry, very dry and cut quite thinly. Though their sauces they provide to the table improve its taste, brisket should never be as dry as this was. The ribs were done well. Juicy but still lacking in flavour, which again, the sauce helps with. Pulled pork was plentiful and well prepared. Minimal sauce needed here. The burnt ends were awesome, by far the highlight. Lathered in sauce and a bit crispy, they were the first thing emptied at the table. Lots of BBQ spots provide subpar Mac and cheese, this was not one of them. It was the second thing emptied at the table and was as far as Mac and cheese goes, excellent. For the price, the deep fried pickles were not worth their cost. $20 for 2 pickles cut in 4s and deep fried with spicy ranch dip. Pickles weren't bad, but not memorable either. The bacon wrapped corn was a 10, the fries were forgettable and the mac salad and mash were both delicious. All in all, not a bad spot for BBQ, but certainly not the best Calgary has to offer. We came here because our airbnb host said it was the best restaurant in town and we are from Georgia, so to be fair we had pretty high expectations. We came in about 8:30 on a Thursday and they seemed to be closing a bit early, but they sat us and were very nice. We split a half rack of ribs, the brisket, fries, bacon-wrapped corn, bbq beans and cheese grits. Everything was good, just nothing was wow. The brisket had good flavor, but was a bit dry and not the tasty juicy brisket I love. Ribs were tasty, but pretty standard. Cheese grits were fluffy and one of the highlights to me. We got the corn because everyone seemed to like it a lot. It is good, but it is also exactly what you think it is; nothing more, nothing less. All in all A OK food with a fun, southern-y atmosphere. This review is regarding the "show room" music venue downstairs and what I sent to the Palomino folks on IG about their unsafe and dumpy facility. Just want to let you know that the "show room" in the basement of your restaurant is a dive. The furniture you supply is garbage and seats about 15 people. I'm 68 years old and do go to some music events that happen at your spot. You have an unsafe condition where my partner had a tripping fall and smashed her face and teeth onto the floor at the step going up to the washrooms. It happened on feb 29th. Ask your staff that was working that night. They'll remember. You know that's unsafe. Everyone knows it's unsafe. You've made a bit of effort in painting the step on one side of the bar but the other side is very hard to see. If we were in the U.S. you'd be looking at a law suit. She requires thousands of dollars in dental work after her fall in your place of business. Your venue is dark during an event and you serve people alcohol. I understand it's a bar but you have a responsibility to the public to present a safe physical space. You've created some really bad publicity here and until I hear it's been remedied, I'll be a no-show and spread the word. GET REAL you guys. read more

Went here for a concert about a year ago. Arrived a couple hours early for a meal and drinks. The food was horrible, overpriced and overly seasoned (salty). If you're going to pretend to be more than just a drinking establishment, then step it up a notch and at least taste your own food. I ordered the poutine, and after a couple bites I sent it back. Cold, and incredibly salty fries (frozen), and the gravy was clearly of the packaged variety (very salty too) making this unpalatable. Unless your falling over drunk, then perhaps it might appeal to some. The supposed cheese curds were also very questionable (chunks of mozzarella?) Wow...are the people in this city really impressed by this sub par over-priced food? Clearly they are after glancing over a few glowing reviews. Anyway, in place of my poutine I ordered a burger & fires which was only a tad more palatable, but just as salty despite requesting "no salt on my fries" this time. The bar had already been set to its lowest point by the poutine, so the below average burger was a blessing as I was hungry. Some hipster came over and began making excuses for his sub par food. Pretty sure he was the manager. I think he needs to get out more or travel elsewhere to see what real pub food is all about. I told him this much, to which he scoffed and walked off. I never feel welcomed when I come here. Everytime I come here to eat, the service is always extremely rude and terrible. I was given a BBQ ticket from the owner and when I tried to redeem it a meal after I had ordered, the waitress told me it only covered sandwiches and beer. She tried to say it covered my beer when I had already ordered and paid for, so she tried to double charge me for my drink. When I asked for BBQ ticket back, she simply refused. What a great combo the brisket was a tender, perfectly smoked piece of meat, ribs are crispy on the outside and tender In the middle, no sauce needed. Fantastic BBQ in the coolest venue in town! I've been here numerous times and I can't believe I never wrote a review before. This place is a fantastic venue for local music on weekends - sometimes there's a duet of bluesy rock upstairs, and other times there's a full band on stage in the underground bar. And they've got the best "secret" patio at the back. Our work group visited for lunch during "Phase 2 Covid" so we could sit on a patio and soak up some rays. We had an excellent meal of BBQ and beer. I tried the BBQ wings and they were excellent, and their brisket was on point! They have fantastic sauces too - something for everyone. Sadly, the restaurant was not very busy since downtown is largely still closed, but I sure hope others support this local business once they return downtown for work! I heard a few people talking at a concert that the palomino is now training it's staff to remove customers who are wearing band merch that the palomino feels could offend people.i mean they have metal shows there and some metal bands have like mutilated bodies on their shirts but whatever I don't see why that's an issue and I didn't really believe what they were saying. Fast forward a few days and we were at the palomino and witnessed staff removing customer2-3 separate people.we asked the bartender what was going on and he said" they had the wrong type of bands on their vests and people were offended" we asked him to clarify and he mumbled something about nazis I think. 10minutes later we saw some punk types walk in and one had a che Guevara shirt on(SUPER WRONG and OFFENSIVE) and a sickle and hammer patch.now, I don't try to be a fascist to anyone but out of curiosity I went back to the bartender and asked if the nasty stuff that guy was wearing was "allowed" and he said of course,Communism is what we need in this country. I was shocked. I guess we can't just all get along and that fascism has moved into public spaces. I'm addicted to bacon, I have no shame in admitting that. So when a friend posted a picture of bacon wrapped corn on the cob and said it was from Palomino, I knew immediately where I was going for lunch later that week! My coworker and I met up with my boyfriend here, and OMG the smoked meat aroma was the best welcoming EVER! Looking at their menu you know they mean business - BBQ and meat. My boyfriend and I both got the Palomino cheeseburger (applewood smoked cheddar, double smoked bacon, caramelized onions and lime chili aioli), and obviously the bacon wrapped corn and fries for my sides (he got the garlic fries and coleslaw). My coworker went with the stampede chicken club with garlic fries and bacon wrapped corn. I couldn't wait for my corn! The crispy crunch of the bacon and sweet corn was awesome and as I ate it I wished I had just gone with a plate of this for my meal instead! My burger was pretty delish, I really liked the lime chili aioli. This place is all about the pulled pork. There's pulled pork sandwiches, pulled pork lasagna, pulled pork poutine; if there's a dish you like to order at different places, you can probably get it here but with pulled pork on it. In fact, the pulled pork makes the dishes here, in my opinion. That isn't to say that they don't have other things. This place really is for meat lovers though, as you can also get different types of BBQ'd beef and chicken. They also have a brunch menu as well. The pulled pork lasagna is awesome. Just think of lasagna but with BBQ'd pulled pork instead of ground meat. The pulled pork poutine is tasty, but I'm ashamed as I somewhat consider myself a poutine connoisseur, and I couldn't finish mine. Not because I didn't like it, just that there was so much meat that I got stuffed. My only complaint is that with groups greater than eight people, they automatically tack on a 17% gratuity. But at least they warn you of that on the menus. If your group is less than eight, they calculate what a 15%, 18%, and 20% gratuity looks like at the bottom of the receipt so you don't have to do the math yourself, which is convenient. They also won't split up the bill (they warn you about this too), although you can split the payments. Kind of annoying when you all want to leave and pay separately, but I can understand how it'd be easier to manage as it seems to get busy sometimes and people come and go often. But all-in-all, the food is great, and I've made it my personal mission to go back and try each item on the menu. I went here with a group of scooterists for a Scooter Rally (Jaguars!) breakfast/brunch. I'm from Edmonton so I don't get a chance to go to this place often but we have had our breakfast/brunch here twice now. It is a really cool spot. We were seated outside at the back so I can't comment on the what it is like eating inside. There was a band playing so it could probably get loud I guess. Outside was great, we could still chat normally and still hear the music. I had the pulled pork sandwich with the garlic fries. They do warn about the garlic on the fries on the menu so be warned! I love garlic and love those fries --- SO much garlic! Awesome stuff. Want again. We did have poor service out back. They may not have been fully prepared for our big group (40 people), but we did book it with them so if they weren't prepared it is their own fault. If I lived in Calgary this would probably be one of my go-to spots. Very unique atmosphere and good food at a reasonable price. read more

We sampled some of the local beers, had some real nice barbecue, had a super nice server named Sara, man oh man it was all good, I had a Pulled pork plate ($16) with two sides- I went for the cole slaw and the black-eyed peas. I chose a 20 oz Grasshopper draft. Everything was fabulous. The three table sauces, a chipotle concoction, a barbecue sauce, and a zippy mustard were all top notch. We could hear the music thumping downstairs and watched baseball on the upstairs tv screens. Delicious southern bbq! Awesome wait staff greeted me and gave me recommendations whne I asked for takeout. Got the beef brisket and ribs, and had the bacon wrapped corn and yam potato mash as aides. Generous portions and tasty, the only thing that is missing to bump this up to a five star would he that the brisket was a little dry, but overall still very tasty. Great spot for happy hour beers and good BBQ. On this visit I had the beef brisket with my two favourite sides: the bacon wrapped corn and garlic fries. The beef was tender and savory and I loved the selection of five BBQ sauces at the table. As a word of warning, don't get the garlic fries if you have any important meetings or dates later on. While delicious, you will be forced to remember the pungunt garlic flavour the rest of teh day. read more

I've been to the Palomino about once a month. Service is always good. Food is consistent. And considering you're about 1 block away from Stephen Ave, the prices are reasonable. My picks: poutine, fried pickles, garlic fries with a side of aioli, caesar and the burger. My only qualm is that I don't like any of the wines due to limited selection and they won't do corkage. I'd be happy to pay $20 or $25 to BYOB, but instead, I have to chug down something I don't like. read more

For what we ordered "The Alberta Cheese Steak Sandwich" sounded really delicious and looked pretty good. In reality, it was pretty average and not really deserving of the 17$ cost. The feeling of the sandwich was a little dry and bland tasting. The bun is one of those white bread buns that just turns into mush with too much handling and the two sides that came with the order were ok, but felt a little like it came from the Freezer section of Costco. The server was pleasant enough but was not really engaged. For example we were ready to order for what felt like a long time and our server walked right past us several times seemingly more interested in wiping down an empty table than take our order. When we queried our server about a beer selection we got the verbal equivalent of a shoulder shrug and was a little surprised that the wine we ordered came in a low-ball glass. The general feeling of the place was ok but as it was busy the ambient sound was loud enough that it made it tough for talking, fine for shouting. Place is better suited for binge drinking on your way to a Flames game. Will probably never go back as I would prefer to spend my money in a place that is more appreciative of my business.
