Even though the restaurant was quite full, upstairs and down, we were placed a ta table to accommodate my wheelchair. Our waitress was more than helpful in arranging for my comfort. Our crisp, cold salads were served with a small loaf of warm bread accompanied by two spreads. The shrimp and grits were scrumptious, with plenty to take home, my husband's steak was cooked to perfection. We shared a crème brûlée with the crisp topping and luscious vanilla bean crème. The live music on a weeknight added to the atmosphere. Decor is interesting to look at as many antique pieces pay homage to the history of the building as a mill. Cozy rustic fine dining vibe perched above the creek apparently in an old mill building. Server and floor staff in general literally among the best I've encountered in years. Somehow they were down to one chef and the host made sure he could adequately accommodate us before even agreeing to seat us. WHO DOES THAT? Everyone else practically would just park you and cross their fingers -if they cared at all. Onion soup was very (sherry? Champagne?) vinegar forward. Uncommon flavor but good. They actually whipped up a Beef Stroganoff for me without alcohol which was also really tender but a tad disappointingly served on bow ties which I love -but I specifically asked and was told it was served over noodles. (Especially when another menu item came with pappardelle which I adore). One tablemate had bacon wrapped meatloaf he really enjoyed - and had to be 2/3 lb of meat. The fish was a head-scratcher...Billed as a curried and beer (IPA?) battered haddock what arrived was curry free and had no discernable trace of batter. The poor thing was encased in a thick wall of panko and absolutely incinerated in the deep fryer. The fish itself however, was done to a turn. The fries may as well have been mashed potatoes. WHY DOES EVERYONE MAKE SCRATCH FRIES THESE DAYS? No one knows how! I will, however, definitely give them another chance for sure. Partially because they were shorthanded but mostly because of our wonderful dining room staff. They were (understandably) unable to accommodate my request for coarse salt despite reporting having searched all over. I believed them too because the level of service was just that good. We always love everything about our visits to the Colden Mill. The staff is always friendly. I love that on our way out, the owner (I'm assuming) always asks what we had and how it was. The onion soup had some burnt chunks which is not the norm (and is why this isn't a 5 star review) but everything else was as delicious as always. We both went with the blank angus strip and pepper. I started going to Colden Mill in August 2023 and had to go back for more of those fantastic menu offerings. Once a month soon turned into twice, then every week, then twice a week or more. Chuck the bartender (and co-owner with chef Matt) is priceless; as a single diner, I spend my evening at the bar and have made many wonderful friends during my visits. The staff are all terrific. The ambiance is cozy and warm. Then, there's the food! I've been there 147 times (yes, I count) and have never had anything that wasn't absolutely delicious. And if you leave hungry, that's on you; most entrees are plentiful enough for a take-home for the next day. I highly recommend Colden Mill for your next dinner out! read more

All the food was top notch, delicious, fresh, & very generous portions: The freshly hot, angel-soft inside, crispy outside table bread w/soft whipped butter was to die for. Brie - warm, encrusted, gooey, crispy bites with a balsamic drizzle & peppery arugula Bbq dry rubbed chicken - a crispy, well seasoned appetizer - with more of that peppery arugula, & a hot honey drizzle Broiled Haddock - literally a whole fish, in garlic butter, w/whole roasted garlic cloves. Sides were bowtie pasta salad, great skin-on fries, & crunchy coleslaw. With (had to have been) house made tartar sauce, this was fintastic. Fish fry - a crispy curry crust on this giant slab of haddock made it uniquely yummy. Same great sides & tartar sauce as the broiled. Equally fintastic. Eggplant parmesan napoleon - a stack of eggplant parm to rival the one at my friends' favorite, plus a mix of perfect veggies (broccoli, carrots, zucchini). Pecan crusted chicken breast (a daily special) - a huge piece of chicken, with a delicious creamy sauce, thick mashed potatoes, & the perfect mixed veggies. A delicious special. Marisa brought over a menu of after-dinner drinks, & read us the dessert specials. We were all tempted by the sound of the brownie sundae & the lemon cream tart w/plumcots! but we were just so full from our huge entrees that we couldn't. This hidden gem of a restaurant was such a lovely discovery! My friends are talking about coming back for Irish coffees and lemon tarts, & telling their friends about our fabulous food. I am a chef and business owner. I have high standards but also understand the craziness of the industry and therefore can give a pass when a pass is due. I reviewed The Colden Mill 5 years ago. The experience was awful. After posting my review, Matt W. (Chef owner) posted a retaliatory negative review about me as a person, on my business Yelp. Matt W. has never met me nor hired us yet felt the need to retaliate. A cowardly move for sure. Today, we tried again. I'm always hopeful that improvements have been made or the last time I visited, was an off day. Not in this case. The owner and one of "Buffalo's best bartenders" was at the helm as we sat at the bar. He seemed confused that we were sitting at the bar to eat and drink. We had to ask for a drink menu. Then we waited ... he was busy chatting with his buddy who was the only other person at the bar. Chuck took so long to get back to us that a server came to take our order. Cocktails were mid, I've had better at worse places. She was lovely and took care of us as Chuck looked at his screens. Appetizer - crab cake Smelly old crab. It was massive and pressed out into the size of a pancake. The tomato/pepper relish was just chopped grape tomatoes with a strip of roasted red pepper. A relish it was not. The server removed the inedible item as the owner and one of "buffalo's best bartenders" stood by and did not engage us, did not apologize and in fact, completely avoided us (still, the only people at the bar) until we left. The Fish Fry special was cooked well but lacked flavor. The tartar sauce had a prominent flavor of horseradish which isn't typical or expected in tartar sauce. The French fries were undercooked and the slaw/mac salad was was made without regard to flavor and texture The eggplant entree was undercooked and the fresh veggie medley was over seasoned. Quick service to be able to get food while very hungry, as almost all tables in the restaurant had been occupied. Went here on a Wednesday evening during phase four Covid reopening, we made a reservation although the restaurant advised us that they were not very busy. We opted to sit on the open patio even though it was threatening to rain. While we were seated it did rain but the tree cover was thick enough to not allow many drops to reach the table, we stayed outside. Order a deep fried Brie which was fabulous along with a bottle of California wine, also quite tasty. Our server was pleasant and attentive throughout the evening. I ordered a porterhouse steak special which was equally delightful over rice. We finished off the meal with a rice pudding dessert. By a happy accident we ended up at the Colden Mill for Friday night dinner. My husband was fixated on Friday Fish Fry but opted for the Cajun broiled and was very pleased. I just needed to have something to look forward to and that felt "normal" during this crazy time, so I made a reservation for here. Even though we live relatively close, for some reason we had just never been here before. I read the reviews and somehow it looks like we missed a great restaurant. When we arrived, we were seated right away. The staff all were wearing masks and the tables were well spaced out. I felt comfortable ! Our waitress couldn't have been nicer. She was so friendly and spoke so fondly about some of the menu items, that we have to go back and try others that we discussed. We both had whiskey sours that were fantastic. My husband and I love French onion soup, so when we saw on the menu an onion soup made "two ways" we were curious. When it arrived it came inside of a bowl that had two reservoirs. One contained a rich dark traditional looking onion soup topped with a crisp bread and cheese, while the other had a creamy white onion soup. We can't say enough and how much we love that soup! It was as delicious as it was unique. I'm just sorry that we forgot to get a picture of it. My husband ordered a filet that was on the specials menu and I ordered the crab topped fish. My fish was delicious, but I got a taste of his steak dunked in the Demi glaze sauce and it literally melted in my mouth! Wow!! We were too full from the meal for dessert, but everything was so well prepared that we had to see what they do for dessert, so we took them home..lol. I had a rice pudding with almonds, cinnamon and dried fruit. Just fantastic. My husband had a brownie dish with ice cream, yes they packaged that up separately to assemble at home, and it came with fresh fruit. So good! Colden Mill is always a safe haven for me - I can't believe I have never reviewed this diamond of the southtowns - maybe I want it all to myself? I started the meal with a creme brule' beer - delish. Shared appetizers were ... crab cake, deep fried brie cheese sticks, grilled romaine salad ... all wonderful - but the grilled romaine hits me right were I itch - I love it. I went with a special Prime Rib - it was seasoned perfectly with a salty garlicky caramelized crusty outside - I took 1/2 of it home. The table shared apple fritters for dessert. Our supper lasted 2 1/2 hours ... but this is not a deterrent. The ambiance reminds me of the ski chalets I used to frequent when I was skiing for the US Olympic team. We made reservations for Saturday at 6:00 pm and arrived at 5:45 pm. The hostess greeted us and then sat is at a table for two that was near the door. There are two rooms they seat in. The room to the right houses the bar and seating with a beautiful ambience, high ceilings, white lights, very warm ambience. We were seated to the left, the feel was not the same and we asked if we could get a different table and were told they only had a high top available. Now I am happy to sit near the bar or even at the bar, but when there are obvious open tables with no one occupying them, I prefer a table. We reluctantly sat at the table and after a few minutes the waitress welcomed us and informed us of the specials. ( I want to be clear, there were empty tables available in the other room ). Now it's 6:00 pm on a Saturday evening, and we were told that they were out of risotto, the filet available was not 8 oz but 6 oz and the price was reduced by $4 and one other item that escapes my mind. Saturday at 6:00 pm is prime time, how can you be out already? The waitress took our drink order, Manhattan with Makers Mark and California Cabernet Sauvignon. Time passed, almost too much time and she returned telling us they were out of Makers Mark. Requested a different brand and when the drinks were delivered the pour on the wine was small for $10 a glass. The key to a good Manhattan is not only the Bourbon but a Luxardo cherry. Was very disappointed when a plain maraschino cherry was found at the bottom of the glass, especially for $14 a cocktail. The bread came out warm, almost hot, but was slightly over baked, not burnt but almost there. Dinner came out and we ordered the filet and NY Strip steak with pablano pepper. The dishes came out hot, with excellent portions. The mashed potatoes had lumps but that's how most restaurants serve them now. The asparagus was cooked to the perfect al dente and both steaks were delicious and cooked perfect to order. The waitress did not have the steak knives when she delivered the meal and it took for a few minutes to get the knives. She did check back after to see how the meal was BUT she was turned and walking away from the table before we even answered. I literally asked my husband if he wanted another drink and she was gone before he answered. Overall food was 4/5, the service was 2/5. When we go and spend $140 for a meal and 2 drinks, we should be pleased. By the way, those tables never filled up. We won't be back. read more

1st meal out since the whole Covid breakout and dinner was ok. Appetizers were good. We had the clams in a wine sauce which were cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. My daughter had the steak salad. The steak was prepared nice but extremely chewy. It lacked the char u need on a perfectly cooked steak. Also, in my opinion the dressing needs more acid. It wasn't memorable. My husband had the strip steak again no char. It came out looking like it was thrown into the oven until it reached the desired temp. Sides of potatoes and beans were good. My youngest daughter had the french onion soup. It was fine just needs salt. I had the fried chicken. Cooked perfectly again just needed salt. Overall service was good minus accidentally serving my 14 yr old a cocktail which was quickly corrected. Overall, it was a good experience but nothing memorable. Oh my goodness ! My work came here for our annual Christmas party and I was not disappointed. The food was amazing . I had onion soup two ways - definitely try it , it's to die for ! I also had a beef tenderloin with potatoes au gratin and some veggie . Absolutely delicious . The only complaint is the parking there is terrible . No where to park on a Saturday night which means you have to park far away from the restaurant and be careful where you do park because there might be signs that say you could be towed. read more

My husband and I went to the Colden Mill with two friends on Friday Night. We were extremely disappointed, and would not go back. We had a reservation for 6 p.m. We were sat down immediately, and then waited 50 minutes for our dinner. This was after, another group of four were sat down AFTER us, and received there dinners before we did. We asked about the specials for the evening, and our waitress told us that there was a "whole" chicken dinner. My husband was going to get this, but questioned her three times as to the "whole" chicken dinner. I even asked her, if they would cut it in half? After he then ordered it, the waitress came back to our table to tell him that it was only a HALF chicken dinner. The prices are extremely high for the quantity of food that you receive. If you are hungry and want a salad or soup, this is all EXTRA. You don't get anything except for a baguette of bread with butter before your meal. My husband who is a big eater, got the BEEF SHORT RIBS $19 - Explained on the menu as BRAISED BEEF, CHEDDAR GRITS, COOKING JUS. Well, when his plate came to the table and he had ONE rib, and the big bone was on the plate next to it. Yes, ONE rib with grits. We had perused the menu online before going to dinner and he wanted this item that showed on the menu: BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN $20 BREAST, THIGH AND LEG, SLAW, SPICY HERB DIP They no longer serve it! I ordered another Rib dinner that was a joke! It was a small amount of rib meat, with a small amount spinach, broccoli, and cheese. I forget what this cost us. We eat out at least three times a week, and there are too many other places to go to eat where you get Quantity with price that you pay. We wouldn't have minded paying the high price, but we left hungry. We drove into Hamburg to get dessert and coffee. Five stars with an asterisk. This place is great if you're looking for that log cabin atmosphere and good food. No better place to go if you're looking for a fall/winter dinner in the hills in a great old building. They have a wood stove that they use in the winter in the dining area, with old country antiques everywhere. All of the food was excellent, but the service was a bit slow. Not a problem if you're going there to relax and enjoy the evening. I don't suppose you'd be in a rush if you headed out here anyway, but they don't have the on-point efficiency of nice restaurants in the city, just keep that in mind and its fine. The food is excellent, not cheap but not overly expensive. Most entrees are in the 17-25 range. Good wine selection. read more

We went to have Dinner last nigh 5-28-2021. We had nice bottle of wine, we shared a crab cake and a chopped salad. THEN came our Entrees my husband got Rack of Lamb, creamed Spinach and baby red potatoes. His food was delicious. I got Crab Topped Haddock, the haddock was very thin and was topped with a torn up crab cake, my creamed spinach was a pile of RAW spinach, not creamed at all. My meal was disgusting!! I talked to management and they could care less. I did not eat my meal but they wouldn't take it off the Bill!! SO I PAID FOR SOMETHING THAT I DID NOT EAT! Went there for a birthday celebration and we sat on the back deck with is set along an adorable creek. This restaurant had a great cozy rustic ambiance that we throughly enjoyed. The fried buttermilk chicken meal was extremely tender and the dipping sauce it came with was excellent. I enjoyed the grilled romaine salad with shrimp, it was a considerate proportion. We have no complaints with food or service and will definitely go back soon to enjoy it again. read more

My wife had the fish fry, a Buffalo tradition and said it was terrific with great sides including hand cut fries and homemade coleslaw. I had the buttermilk chicken and it was heavenly. Food was really good but service was terrible! We had two waiters (had to ask for a new one) but both were very bad. They were very slow and we had to wait forever to get anything. They hardly ever came to check on us. My husband ordered his prime rib medium rare and it came out rare so he could not finish it. The only reason they have one star is because the food was so good.
