I'm hoping I just came on an off day, but I did not enjoy the coffeesmith. It is a bit out of the way for me, but I love a good local coffee shop. It can be a tricky parking lot to get to, full of long one way streets if you're not familiar with the area. The atmosphere is okay. I bit stark feeling for a coffee shop. The pastry case had two crusty looking muffins wrapped in plastic wrap so I decided to not get any food items. I did get an iced vanilla latte which overall didn't taste amazing. I only drank half and ended up getting an upset stomach from it. For the price ( over $7 with a 15%tip) this was simply not worth it. I will say the staff is very friendly but the product is a no go. read more

Who doesn't love the smell of a coffee shop when you walk in the door? Everyone. Except when you live in Waukee and live under communist rule and are forced to west a crappy mask. It sucks butt because this place smells amazing when your olfactory glands get a whiff. The wafting aromas of fresh grind are like a fix to a junkie of Java and this place is your supplier. I randomly drove by this place one day and was like HO. LY. CRAP. that looks cool. They've got a stellar, chic and approachable space. Great for sipping coffee with a friend or while you're getting some work done. They have seasonal options (I went with a rosemary honey latte and added lavender) plus other standard selections. I got the egg and cheese croissant with sausage and OMG. SO GOOD. Very flavorful and delish. The barista was helpful and friendly and the space was truly relaxing. I want to start by saying we LOVE The Coffeesmith and have been coming back regularly since moving to Waukee. Their great selection of seasonal speciality drinks put them above the rest in town. However lately when coming in on the weekends it seems to be hit or miss whether or not our drinks will be made properly. It's still worth the gamble, but a lot of the times it taste more like drinking a cup of milk than coffee. p.s. try the breakfast sandwiches - the sauce makes it! read more

I loved my afternoon visit to The Coffeesmith. The space is open, airy, uncluttered and had chill coffeehouse music playing softly. There is ample seating available, and you can definitely push a few tables together to accommodate a larger group. Plenty of outlets, too! I had no trouble getting a ton of productive work done here. There are two gender-neutral restrooms. The service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. The espresso was very good. Overall, I was impressed! This coffeehouse stood out to me in the area - it had the character I was seeking and I enjoy finding local gems whenever I'm traveling. read more

Good coffee, but not great by a long stretch. It's not fresh roasted in house, which in my book is a requirement for great. The quality of execution by the staff is highly variable and this might be a function of the shop not being open for long. I would normally give this sort of place a 3 star review, but the staff is super nice and they keep it clean, so I'll give them a bonus for that considering they are not a well established shop. Given a choice between going here or Starbucks, I'd come here each time. My primary gripe is that I wish their coffee was a fresher roast. read more

The Good: very clean, lots of places to sit, friendly staff. Their cold-brewed coffee is in the top 3 in Des Moines - you can tell they really make it the right way and give it 24 hours to brew. The Bad: bit of a weird location, way out west. The food and pastries selections were very lacking, so don't come here expecting coffee and a bite to eat. I was finally able to make it over to The Coffeesmith for the first time yesterday. It was easy to find and there was plenty of parking. When I walked in I was instantly greeted by the girls at the counter in the back. They were so friendly and welcoming. I got one of their big French Toast muffins and an iced mocha. My favorite part is that if you are eating it there, you get served actual plates/mugs/glasses. It gives it a very homey and intimate feel. My drink was fabulous and the muffin was fresh and full of flavor. I sat there and relaxed for a while. There was a wide array of customers-from the business professionals working on their laptops to the high school students chit chatting with their friends, this is truly a place for everyone! read more

My favorite local coffee shop for sure in the western burbs, but it's a toss up with Scenic Route for tops overall in the metro. I LOVE their signature drink, the Pablo Honey. Not only is this the name of a Radiohead album, but an espresso drink with LOTS of cinnamon. They have a good amount of seating, a good breakfast sandwich and a small pastry selection. I've never had a drink or bite here I didn't enjoy. This is my go to meet up spot in Waukee/ WDM area. The owners are friendly, local, present in the business, and committed to the community. The coffee is so good--I got a simple iced latte, no sugar, sweetener or flavoring and it tasted great--unlike a certain giant coffee company that has to add tons of sugar, syrup and whipped cream to cover up their bitter coffee. I also got an egg and cheese croissant--it was really good. High quality flaky croissant and a garlic aioli--which I wasn't sure I would like on a breakfast sandwhich but it was delicious. Only drawback was the frozen egg patty they use--I would strongly recommend baked eggs or some other alternative--every other aspect of this place is on point, don't let some frozen processed eggs detract from all the high quality products. read more
