The Coffee Studio, located at the north end of the craziness that was the Andersonville Sidewalk Sale, was a wonderful refuge on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I was planning to just get coffee, but a moment of genius prompted me to ask the clerk, "Do you have any vegan treats?" By golly, he did! I ended up with a vegan bagel and vegan cream cheese, which I ate with great appreciation, even though I wasn't very hungry. I just wanted to support a place that provides for us poor, benighted vegans, who are dedicated to our plant-based diets. The inside looks very comfortable and welcoming. Being that the weather was so beautiful, I took my coffee and treat outdoors and sat at one of their tables facing Clark Street. There was a woman singing and playing the ukulele on the corner, which was more pleasant than you might think reading about it here. I was very pleased with the look of the place, the selection, the helpful clerk, and the vegan options. I will make it a point to come back. read more

Great place to go for work, to meet with friends for coffee, or to hang out and read. Coffee is perfect, nice variety of pastries (monkey bread and bagels are amazing!), nice selection of sandwiches, salads etc as well. The smoked salmon flat bread is really yummy too! I was tricked. Damn you The Coffee Studio. You've got all the trappings of a great coffee shop, in fact your brick-and-natural-wood scheme looks not unlike Stumptown's Annex in Portland. But there's one thing missing. Not the wifi, not the straight-outta-Modernica/Moss furniture and accessories, nor the custom display cases. Nope, it's all there. In fact, just spending time in a setting so lovely will increase your hotness by a factor of ten. I know because it's true. So what's missing? Brilliant coffee, prepared properly. There's ample lip service paid to the preparation of coffee - just look at chalkboard on the far wall. Looks like they know what goes into great coffee. Or at least the person training them did. If only execution was as good as the promise. The cappuccino I had here was one of the very worst I've had in Chicago. I kid you not. It was such a disappointment, I took it across the street and dumped it in the trash, after $3 plus tip. Because of the 'no liquids' rule in the cafe's trash can, I didn't want to embarrass the barista by asking her to do it over or to throw it out for me. Maybe I just didn't want to embarrass myself. Because there's no barrier between barista and customer save for a very low wall, it is easy to engage the barista in chat...and distract them. That's precisely what happened after I gave the very sweet and charming barista my order. Her friend walked in and she began chatting...and chatting...and chatting. And next thing you know, I'm throwing Chicago's worst cappuccino in the trash. What makes a cappuccino bad? So many things, so many things. First, the espresso pull. She didn't pack the portafilter with enough ground espresso. She did give it a nice, firm pack, however. She then pulled the espresso for too long, resulting in watery espresso. And then she didn't froth the milk enough, resulting in a weak foam structure that collapsed immediately. There was only the slightest hint of foam on my drink. Worst of all, I asked for a DRY cappuccino, which means "mostly foam, very little milk". What she gave me was a latte. If I wanted a latte, I would have asked for a latte. Dammit, The Coffee Studio, I'll give you another try...but there better be another barista on duty or I'm walking out. _______________________________________________ Update, 4-7: At the urging of the owner, who contacted me via Yelp, I went back to try my cappuccino in-house. This experience was appreciably better - no distracted barista, no discarded drink. My cafe companion and I both ordered cappuccinos. My cafe companion loved her drink - it was just right, and her microfoam lasted for the duration of our chat. My cappuccino, by contrast, was less successful. The foam broke down quickly (perhaps a consequence of going for whole milk?) and there was a bit too much milk for my liking. I had ordered it 'dry' but it was unmistakeably wet. I also returned and tried an espresso. It was a good pull, as good as I'd expect from an Intelligensia espresso blend. Perhaps one of the positives of espresso here is that they dose their drinks very strong - they use a triple dose and serve you half - meaning you get about 50% richer espresso than at a place where you'd just get a single dose. read more

I don't understand how a place that seems to pride itself on its mad-coffee-skills...can brew such an inconsistent cup of coffee?!? I don't get lattes, or mochas, or choco-lattes, or frappa-choco-latte-cinos...I like my coffee brewed, I like it black and if you put sugar in it, I'll punch you in the face. Coffee Studio, your brewed coffee needs serious improvement...your espresso shots are also way too bitter and a tutorial in crema may be in order. The chocotella (steamed milk mixed with Nutella), is my only reason to continue coming here...that little cup of delicious is a score! Also, most of the staff are super friendly and sweet and the shop itself is always clean though somewhat uninviting for lounging, but I think that's just me since there are always people hanging out. MY GOD, Coffee Studio. Would it KILL YOU to hire a barista that isn't the very incarnation of Pretentious Snottery? Who doesn't look and act as though she's smelling caca? Who has one --just ONE-- people skill? Just one? I will not come in here again, I just found this place pretentious and very fussy but having said that, there are obviously by the reviews tons of people who love this place. I like Intelligentsia coffee but I almost found it "club" like, either you tow the line, breakout your laptop, not say a word and look very intently at your computer or you are out. It just was not a comfortable, cozy atmosphere and the guy at the service counter was kind of sullen. I think this is one of those kind of places where you are either "in" or "out". For me, it has a sterile, people taking themselves overly seriously air about it. This one is not for me, there are too many other options in the neighborhood but it could be for you. Not so much. Came here after some breakfast nearby for an iced coffee. Parking was pretty easy to find as we parked right in front. We walk into this very modern shop with some awesome decor. There were two baristas inside, one behind the bar and one out in seating area. We were greeted with a cold blank stare and lukewarm hello. They seemed kinda bored actually. I wanted to peek at the menu first before I finalized my order just in case there was something I was missing out on. I did notice they had a lot to offer and the menu was reeeaaalllyy long. I stuck with my original order of iced coffee and got a butterfly cookie for my little one. My total came to over $5 which was a tad much for a coffee and cookie but whatevs. They serve Intelligentsia here and I was pretty excited to get my drank and enjoy. But alas, my drink was hardly palatable. How do you mess up an iced coffee. It was VERY strong and had a very bitter taste to it. I've worked with coffee for many years and drinking it for even longer to know that it just wasn't right. Oh how I love The Coffee Studio. I no longer get the exercise I used to when I walked all the way to Dollop to take up real estate there on a per diem basis, but I've never found a tastier caffe americano. This place is everything I want in a coffee shop: good lighting, wood tables, exposed brick, music that doesn't make me want to put headphones on, and an excellent tea selection (I'm not actually one for coffee). I've only had three things here: the hot tea (many delicious choices), the iced tea (four options during summer!), and the everything bagel, toasted, with regular cream cheese. All delicious. I come here when I want to do some reading or high quality think work (read: research). There's a one hour limit on the free WiFi, so if you need to answer emails or be otherwise connected it's not the place. I also enjoy taking visiting friends here on nice days as it has good hours and is a nice walk from my house. Cute and clean gender neutral bathrooms (humans / humans + babies), friendly enough staff, and plenty of seats (though it does get busy). read more

I think it's about time to bump up my review to five stars. Here's the story: I've spent much of the past few years being addicted to coffee. I would get headaches if I skipped my daily caffeine fix, and I'd really be grumpy, unpleasant, and helpless to do work if I hadn't had my morning fix. This is not healthy. I don't care how great coffee is - an addiction is an addiction. And so I gave it up, just enough so that I can *enjoy* it, instead of needing it. I started by cutting my consumption by one third, and maintained it for a week. Then I went down to half for a week. Then I went down to one third for a week. And then I cut it out all together. Let me tell you, it was hard. Sometimes I went back to bed at 7pm. My boyfriend brought me a lovely cup of tea once and I snapped at him. But once I was off, and I awoke every morning thinking of my tasks for the day instead of my morning cup, life was better. And something else happened, which was quite unexpected: coffee started to taste better than it ever had. And so I have a cup of coffee every few weeks, on afternoons when I want to just sit down and enjoy it and savor it. No cravings - just a lovely little pleasure like a walk or a book. And since I've cut down on my coffee budget so much anyway, I might as well splurge on the good stuff. And I will boldly put forth what no other coffee drinker will dare to say: I like the cortados at Coffee Studio more than Intelligentsia. There. I said it. I know. It's sacrilege. And while we're at it, I like their cortados better than the Blue Bottle Coffee Company from SF, which generally wins awards for having the best coffee in the country. And it's just as good as Tilikum Place Café, a French cafe in Seattle that oddly has amazing coffee, even though they're not known for it. Isn't it funny how reducing your consumption of something allows you to upgrade to the best of the best? No more brewing ground Starbucks from my $20 drip machine at home. And to boot, the staff are way friendlier than they used to be. A prolific erection in the seat of any pomodernist's distressed raw denim couture selvedge... ...no seriously, its beautiful. I am a simple slovenly creature of comfort and I avoid coffee shops because I can make delicious roast at home and take it with me in a thermos, but when I go out I hit up intelligentsia or other good roasters and like to poke about to see what floorplan they're hyping. I always assumed it was too much to ask of an in-n-out coffee bar to remain simple rather than flashy and not center their layout on hawking crap every three feet at eye level. TCS surprisingly kept their entire work area waist level which leaves you to see the entire store at a glance and keeps non-food sales items on their own shelf opposing the checkout. Raw (unfinished I think?) wood accents, glass and immaculate stainless everywhere, modest yet ADEQUATE LIGHTING (dear coffee shops, you are not bat caves, thx), brilliant. Well, to get to the important bits they make a mean americano and I heartily recommend this place cos they also do vegan treats which I didn't sample, but back hard. read more

I have been getting my fix here for several years & have yet to find a place in Chicago that delivers at the same level. The drinks here are consistently excellent & well worth the price. To think that people pay the same (or more) for a latte at Starbucks kills me. I love that The Coffee Studio uses locally roasted beans, organic milk, fair trade sugar & makes their own syrups. Their drinks are also subtly flavored -- excluding the decadent caramel latte & Nuttella hot chocolate. If you are looking for a cup of sugar with some Folgers sprinkled in, this isn't your place. There's also some delicious baked goods [no preservatives] & a good amount of vegan choices. Plenty of things for non-caffeine drinkers, too. I adore the barista crew. Stop in just a few times & they will get to know your name & drink preference. I once left my wallet on the counter & was completely nonplussed as I knew one of the baristas would keep it for me. Some reviewers have said that there is a pretentious air to The Coffee Studio, but I have never experienced that. Laid back? Yes. Unhelpful? Never. So, why am I being a bitch & only giving 4 stars? 1) LAPTOP HOBOS -- Sweet Cracker Sandwich. They have invaded. Good luck finding an open seat between 9am-close, because these m-f'ers aren't moving for anything. The owners need to come up with some kind of solution because I've seen plenty of people walk in & quickly turn around once they see all the seats taken. I haven't had my drink "for here" in at least 6 months. 2) SOY CHARGE -- At $.50 a drink, this adds up. I'm all for local businesses making a profit, but when my drink already costs $4.00, the repeated charge for $.50 gets to me. I wouldn't mind $.25 or $.35. 3) THE OWNER -- I've only seen the female owner. By "seen" I mean "lurk about." It would be great if she actually knew my name (as I'm there all the time), operated the POS once in a while, or even walked around the cafe & said "hi" to people. Nope -- she prefers to stand behind the counter, glower, & reprimand her baristas. It's a little creepy & not in keeping with the overall vibe of the business. I was very impressed and thought we'd try some of the other numerous shops down Clark St, thinking they'd be as good or better. Nope. The baristas here know what they are doing. Thank God that The Coffee Studio is on my commute to work. It may be putting a dent in my pocket, but not much more than any dent created by Starbucks or another cookie cutter coffee place. The latte I get here is smooth with just the right amount of bite. It's a treat. I'm also usually so disappointed by chai lattes, but The Coffee Studio delivers. I love their chai. And as someone else said, the pumpkin bread is killer, but I'm also partial to the chocolate croissants for mornings when I'm feeling sinful. It's also no surprise that this place was founded by a couple of ex-designers. Its atmosphere emulates what's on its magazine racks--Dwell, Metropolis, etc. I can't speak to the wifi issue because when I do get the chance to sit down here, I take advantage of the space to decompress, pick up one of the magazines or chat with a friend, and sip on whatever I've chosen. Its a shame. Most things about this place hit the mark for me, but the most important mark is missed, and unfortunately I won't be back. The tea was great, the staff was nice, the atmosphere was great. But the big downfall was when I asked how the internet was handled, I was handed a code for one hour worth of service. I was then told that I can have another hour if I come back up and buy something. To some degree I can understand why they have this policy. The place was packed, the only seat I could find was next to a screaming baby that kept trying to put his hand in my tea, so they want people to either spend money or make way for paying customers. Maybe they have such a good flow of new customers that they don't need customers like me that need to set up shop for several hours and work. I am not a freeloader, but I also don't want to be forced to buy things just to keep the internet working. I will buy things as I want them, which will be regularly but not on the hour. These days policies like that seem so antiquated to me. I really enjoy supporting local coffee shops, but unfortunately on this day i was forced down to the local Starbucks. read more

A coffee shop that stops brewing decaf after about 5pm--weird!! That actually makes me sad. They made a cafe americano (decaf) instead--which was a little on the strong side, but still tasty. I am not 100% sure I like this place--mainly because it is not so cozy. There is almost an industrial feel to it, perhaps because the decor is very modern. There were 2 staff members that had this "you are bothering me" look about them--next time I will take my coffee without the sneer--thanks! All in all, it is just A-OK. Dimension the first: Decor ----------------------------------- The decor is slick, bordering on chic, and leagues beyond fancy schmancy. Think Sex and the City meets Logan's Run. If you ever wondered what Guy Montag's favorite cafe hangout might look like then your best guess probably resembles The Coffee Studio. Dimension the Second: Food and Drink ----------------------------------------------------- Besides the snazzy furnishings, The Coffee Studio provides nice coffee and baked goods. I had a cappuccino that was expertly crafted: foam you could stand a small child on without said child suffering a milky end, solid espresso in the right proportions, and an artfully done heart marked my foam. I indulged in a sweet treat as well, selecting a chocolate chip cookie to cure a powerful bout of hypoglycemia. The cookie was meh. Methinks it was undercooked, giving it that unmistakable cookie dough saucer three inches in diameter taste for which some pine. Me? I prefer my cookies on the crisp side, ya dig? Dimension the Third: Pretentiousness -------------------------------------------------- All coffee houses are pretentious to some degree, and I'm investigating what amount of pretentiousness is optimal. Go too far and you're a snarling like William F. Buckley at a sneak preview of The Hangover. Not far enough and you might as well be Starbucks in Gurnee Mills. (Love you, entry F Starbucks!) Somewhere between those two poles is equilibrium, and that equilibrium is what I intend to find. My experience was shockingly free of pretentiousness. I got a smile from the cashier, the barista didn't scowl at me, and not one person mentioned Proust or the Gilmore Girls. Not bad. On the other hand the Macbook to customer ratio was off the charts. In total, pretentiousness was appropriate. Dimension the Fourth: Potpourri ------------------------------------------- My only real qualm with The Coffee Studio is that originality isn't swinging from the rafters. While I think it's great to have a clearinghouse for the finest coffees and baked goods in Chicago it seems like those cafes that ride the gravy train of other trailblazing brands or stores should be penalized--unless they make up for this in some other, extraordinary way. (Not everybody can roast their own coffee after all.) The Coffee Studio does a fair job of making up for this shortcoming--if it can be called a shortcoming--but it doesn't bowl me over. However, they do a solid job and I'd certainly return. The Coffee Studio does an excellent job with OPP (other people's products) but I could just as easily go to those other places and get at least the same quality of goods. Good on you, Coffee Studio, for being in Andersonville and saving me the trek to Intelligentsia, but what value are you adding to the already great products you serve? Conclusion --------------- It's a fine joint. Well-made beverages and tasty treats. It also serves an area that isn't close to a ton of other coffee spots, and it does a fine job. My friend at Imbibe directed me to this place. I was lured in by the promise of free wifi and organic ingredients. The coffee is fantastic. The wifi is limited to an hour per drink. Good business strategy perhaps but it feels stingy as a patron who likes to suck up wifi in abundance. People praise the minimalist environment but I found it somewhat sterile....Like, don't get TOO comfortable. Not as cozy as Metropolis or Dollop. I will return for the delicious coffee but the atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired. Chalk it up to aesthetic preference. I was about to give The Coffee Studio 3 stars, but after seeing that Yelp suggested that 3 stars is equivalent to "A-OK" I just couldn't. It wouldn't be fair to the world. I love trying new cafes, and I've heard a few good things about The Coffee Studio so I thought I'd check it out. When I got there, I was pretty impressed with the atmosphere and thought it would be a nice place to sit and study for a while. I order my coffee, got some food, had myself a seat and hopped on my computer... Oh wait, I forgot a step... I also had to get a wifi code with my purchase which allowed me 1 hour of internet... I'm sorry, but this just isn't reasonable considering the price I pay for coffee and food at The Coffee Studio. I understand the logic that the internet should only be for paying customers, but I can find plenty of other cafes that don't suggest that I get the F out after an hour. What's not to love about the Coffee Studio? A few things, but I'll get to that in a second. Awesome espresso. I'm talking top notch: balance, aroma, crema, presentation (w/ that awesome little cookie!)...perfection. After so many shitty experiences with metallic-tasting, evil little black puddles of "coffee extract", this alone would keep me coming - even if the rest were so bad as to warrant 1 star. An actual coffee bar to drink your espresso. I can walk in, order my espresso, sip it down, and adios. Big plus after a long ride and my bike is outside, up against the window. The outdoor seating is spacious as well. They have great pastries (very fresh, the almond croissant kills) and the restroom is always very clean. I think they pay the employees relatively well here. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the deadpan attitude when I bring our new baby (now 6 weeks), in either a stroller or a body sling, where I used to get all smiles pre-baby (and still do, no baby.) The ownership REALLY needs to address the bias that their very talented yet smug hispter baristas seem to possess. I've heard this from many other customers of the Coffee Studio. Sorry, but it's Andersonville. And we didn't all migrate here from Wicker Park - have you SEEN Damen Avenue between North and Armitage lately? Stroller Mafia down there. Some of us have lived here a long time, and yes we're breeding, and we're staying. You once had a little sippy cup and cried because you pooped your pants, too, you smug, unshaven prick. After a few months of hunting, I've found my neighborhood coffee shop of choice, and it's the Coffee Studio. First of all, the drinks are fantastic. Simply fantastic. I've had many different baristas during my various trips to this north Andersonville spot, and each time, the drinks were consistently great and the service was even better. The shop also offers free wireless for an hour -- with a code that you receive at the register -- which is nice. I feel like it makes me stay on task (though I'm pretty sure that if you needed another code for more time, they'd give it to you). It's not the biggest space ever -- particularly if you want a table instead of a chair -- so it seems to get somewhat crowded every once and a while, but if you time it right, this is a great place to get some work done in a casual, trendy spot with fantastic caffeinated beverages. This is one of my favorite coffee places. The baristas are all really friendly there and the espresso drinks are very well made. They give out little cookies with the coffee drinks, which always reminds me of trips to Europe. There's something about a cookie with your coffee that just makes it so much better. They're open until 9 pm, which is a perk. They also have some tasty truffles at the counter. Chocolate is a guilty pleasure of mine and I like to have one piece of chocolate in the evening so I usually pick up one of the two-piece packs and it will last me a couple of days. I'm not sure why so many people refer to this place as being "hip" or pretentious. Far from it. At 42, I'm a cross between nerdy ex-academic and socially awkward dork and I've never felt anything but comfortable here. Socially speaking, at least. It can get pretty crowded and hard to find a seat, especially on the weekend, and if you get stuck sitting on one of the counter stools, that's less than ideal. However, in the summer, they open up the outside, which improves the amount of seating considerably. This is my dream coffee shop and go-to place to get work done in Andersonville. It's a super subdued, relaxed atmosphere. And, seriously, whoever runs the music playlist has wonderful taste and is also really mindful about playing relaxing background music that doesn't interrupt work (The National, Beach House, Nick Drake, etc.). Some places aren't so good about that. The baristas are super friendly, down-to-earth people and the service is excellent. The bagels can't be beat and I love that they serve loose leaf tea. Pretty much everything about this place is perfect. Good energy, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and conducive for both solo work and coffee dates. I really like the design of this shop! After a delicious meal at m.henry, we trekked over to The Coffee Studio. The interior is fantastic, with all the natural light coming in from the upper windows, and I really liked the modern twist and minimalist aesthetic. I ordered a cortado while my friends picked up a.. (lavender?) tea and chai latte. My cortado was as expected - smooth and strong. The tea came in a cute pour-over container and was pretty good as well; however, what really set me back was the chai latte. It was too sweet! I'm really not sure what happened but it was overly sweetened with something and tasted like something you would buy from a general supermarket. I'm going to step out and say this was an accident.. but overall this would be a great place to spend some time catching up with friends or doing some work in Andersonville. read more

I absolutely love the quality of coffee here! It's excellent! Delicious and they cater to all your unique requests! I took off two stars for Kayla. All the baristas, except for her are fantastic! She usually works the morning shift! Not only does she frown but she is busy socializing with customers who are seated by the bar vs making your drink. She also always forgets the special addition to my coffee even when it's written on the cup or told to her by the barista at the register. I love this local cafe and on most days visit twice that's $12 a day on coffee but Kayla's sour attitude and slow service ruins it. read more

Best cappuccino I've had in a LONG time. I almost forgot what they were supposed to taste like - before all the watered-down versions I've become accustomed to lately. I went there to do some work and was disappointed by their limited seating. They have about three two-seaters along one wall, a big table for six (if packed - where I ended up) and four two-seaters against the back wall that are smooched together (booth on one side, chairs on the other) along with some somewhat comfortable looking loungy chairs. Ok, maybe that sounds like a lot for this little spot (and it is little). Maybe they could do with one more big table vs the loungy chairs (where no one was sitting). read more
