My 9-year-old son, Brandon, has been attending private computer coding lessons at The Coder School - Irvine for a few months, and so far, he loves it. The school gives each potential new student a free 30 minute trial lesson with the owner, Mr. Mark, who is frank, but wonderful, with children. The school offers group lessons or private lessons. Despite the slightly costly fee for private lessons, we decided to give the lessons a try, as Brandon loved Mr. Mark's teaching style. Brandon was matched with Mr. Kevin, his private lesson coding instructor. My son was initially sad that Mr. Mark would not be his instructor, but cheered up quickly when he discovered that Mr. Kevin was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. After every lesson, my son would happily chatter about everything he has learned that day. The school is also very accommodating if a student is sick and needs to reschedule last minute, even though the owner would still have to pay the instructor due to the late cancellation notice. I am very grateful for the owner, staff, and instructor's kindness and understanding in these types of situations. When schools and sports shut down due to COVID-19, we were looking for enrichment activities to engage our son at home. He'd expressed an interest in coding after being exposed to Scratch at school, so we decided to look into coding classes for him. After reading reviews for several schools in the area, we decided to do a complimentary trial class with The Coder School. I'm thrilled to say that my son has been hooked on coding ever since! He now does weekly classes with Mark, who is a phenomenal instructor. The lessons are challenging and fun. Mark goes above and beyond to answer questions and make sure the kids understand that lesson. They send parents a summary of the lesson afterwards. Classes have been through Zoom during COVID-19. I wasn't sure how well that would work, but honestly, it's been very easy and smooth. I appreciate being able to stay safe and also not having to drive him someplace! My son thoroughly enjoys his time spent at this school. The type of instruction they provide to students is very personal (only 1 or 2 students per teacher) and teaching is very instructive and encouraging. In the beginning, the school offered my son multiple teachers to choose one to see which teacher he would be most conformable with learning under. After each class, the teacher provides feedback to me on my son's performance and what he is learning. In addition to that, class scheduling is very flexible and built for parents to have a stress-free experience when choosing classes for their children. It is easy to make up for missed classes and your children will always be in an age-appropriate class with other students their own age. My daughter loves art and I'm hoping with the lessons she learns in coding (python, html, etc) she can later design websites, create NFT's, all with a "design" lens. I've looked at different schools' coding curriculum and so far I have been very impressed with the teachers at the CoderSchool. We have zero background in computers and just within the last few months when she first started, she's already coded multiple programs. She's practiced File, data structures, loops, conditionals, and concatenation, etc. Most importantly, she enjoys and is not intimidated by "computers." I find the teachers serve as great mentors as they are university students in the area. She's been doing this virtually and it's been effective for her to grasp the material. My 13yo son and 11yo daughter have been taking coding classes with the Irvine Coder School for the last 4 years. They have had a variety of instructors, and they have all been very good. Each instructor has different styles and strengths, but all have been able to teach my kids different coding languages starting with Scratch and now HTML, CSS, SQL, and Python. Even after 4 years, they look forward to their weekly lessons, and we love that in addition to learning code, they are also learning to develop their skills to organize their thoughts and build in steps and logical order. My son age 13 has been attending coder school in Irvine for almost 2 yrs and he absolutely loves it ! He has learned python, javascript, raspberry pi, mobile app development etc. Instructors are very knowledgeable and know how to teach. My son looks forward to his zoom class every week and online zoom class has made it a lot viable to continue his lessons even in the middle of pandemic. He has become quite tech savvy as a result of coding school. He was able to use his knowledge gained from coding school to take it a step further and set up 3d printing at home. We can tell by the sense of excitement on his face and the way he wants to explain his achievements to us. What I really like about Coderschool is the way they provide feedback listing each and every skill taught during the session. Found this school while searching for something to occupy our son's time during the summer. We signed him up for a 1wk camp and he came home the first day and said, "this is greatest thing I have ever done!" Started about 4 months ago - have tried other options to teach them coding, but nothing has really stuck, until now. Kids have been loving the 2-on-1 classes, which has been wonderful to keep the pace going just right to hold their attention, and I can tell they are getting the concepts down!
