This was probably the best English food I've had in NYC - bottom line. Also the service was very attentive, the floor manager came over to check on our meal twice, which I appreciated. This restaurant truly went above and beyond to exceed the high standards that it has set. Ordered the scotch egg with house-made ketchup (9/10), the steak tar-tar (10/10), the truffle risotto (9/10 - a little too heavy on the Parmesan for my taste), the cheese burger with fries (8/10 - very good, but I would've preferred a bit of a drier burger), and the strawberry shortcake dessert (10/10). I overheard another table compliment the fish and chips here, so I would definitely return to try that in the near future. We came in for lunch for restaurant week that runs about $26 for a two course menu. Our server was great and the food was also very good. The bread they serve looks good, but was really tough. The butter was delicious but breaking through the tough, rubbery exterior of the bread made it tough to eat. Looking around, most people didn't even touch it. The foie gras parfait was nicely plated and came with a side of bread. The lentils added a nice texture to the creamy liver dish. It was also sort of sweet and nutty, with small prices or duck sprinkled around. The risotto with lobster reduction was very good but could have been a little warmer. The ox cheek and ale pie was delicious. It came with an oyster sauce they pour tableside and had a delicious dark sauce that encircles the pie. The crust was perfect, but again, I thought the food could have been warmer. The flavors were great, service was spectacular, but the timing at which the food came out could have been better. We saw them bring our entrees out right after our first courses made their way to the table so they turned around and brought it back in, which is probably why the food was more on the lukewarm side. Maybe a little miscommunication on the part of timing. But don't let that stop you from paying them a visit. The restaurant is up a set of spiral stairs. Came for brunch a few weeks ago and we had a great experience! The space is located upstairs from a hotel lobby so we had to go looking for it a bit. Brunch is located in a smaller dining area that the hostess led us to and it wasn't very crowded for a Sunday. Funny enough, we didn't really try the brunch food and stuck with the lunch options which were pretty good. The "Mac and Cheese" had great sauce and the meat melted in your mouth. That being said, it was not what I expected so putting that out there. The highlight of this meal was definitely the desert. The Clocktower was just all around amazing! My boyfriend and I got there 15 min. before our reservation and started off with drinks at the bar. The bartender was cool to talk with and the drinks were well made. There was also a pool table in an intimate room between the bar room and the dining room - wish we had known about it earlier! The service was great and I really can't stop thinking about the food! We got the Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Parfait (snack), Crab Cocktail Tart (starter), Truffle Risotto (Main), Beef Wellington (Main), Strawberry Eton Mess (dessert), and Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding (dessert). I think the word crab just called out to me at first glance so I was stuck on it without really reading the other starter options haha. It was tasty, but I would definitely want to try the Seared Diver Scallops next time or the Berner's Tavern Macaroni and Cheese, which our waitress had recommended. We just didn't get it because we were already getting the Truffle Risotto, which was mouthwateringly flavorful. And the Beef Wellington was, of course, fantastic. We came here late for a same-day dinner reservation and had a nice date, though an overall meh culinary experience. I wouldn't say I regret coming here, but definitely won't repeat. For our starters, the scotch egg tasted good, and it was a good scotch egg relative to what I've had in the US, but that bar is quite low. The maine scallop was probably my favorite dish. It was well seasoned and had some unique flavors, with the leak-cream sauce. It had a good number of scallops, but I felt that the texture of the dish was a bit one-note and very soft to really be enjoyable. The Foie Gras with Orange wasn't my favorite. I personally didn't find that the sweetness of the orange able to compliment the rich flavors of the food gras. I also think that the fish would have done better with some crispier bread. We had a beef Wellington as our main, which was the main reason we came here. I will say that it was perfectly cooked, but found it under seasoned. The sauce helped, but it didn't completely win me over. The potatoes were decent (as I would expect at any restaurant) but I felt that the bone marrow didn't really add anything to the meal. It kinda felt that the bone marrow was there to justify the cost of the meal, and it wasn't really additive. We chose to come to Clocktower because of their Michelin star and we were thoroughly impressed with the food and service. Up a set of winding staircase from the Edition Hotel lies an expansive restaurant, complete with a bar and a pool table. The dining space spans three rooms, and it feels like you're dining in a mansion's drawing room. With tasteful gallery-style black and white portraits on the walls and a stately crackling fireplace, The Clocktower provides a cozy and intimate experience for all diners. We were celebrating our anniversary, which the boyfriend thoughtfully included in our reservation. The Clocktower, in response, provided us with a hand-written card that greeted us at our table, congratulating us on our anniversary. We were served complimentary champagne by the sommelier. And after our meal, we were treated to complimentary dessert, comprised of a mango mousse cake (with a candle!), and two almond tarts, all of which were delightfully light and not too sweet. Our meal: - Complimentary bread: The softest and warmest (actually quite hot) complimentary bread! The hot steam escaped as I broke apart the bread and for once, I didn't have to gut the bread because the crust was crisp enough to have a bite but not sharp enough to cut the roof of my mouth. - Roasted Maine Scallops: Hands down, BEST scallops we have ever had. Yes, we do have a running list because we both love seared scallops. These were perfectly seared at the top so that it was a light crisp and the whole dish was so cohesive paired the bed of cauliflower crumble, which was both tart and creamy. -Dry aged Creekstone Beef Tartare: We love a good tartare, and the wild mushrooms were such a nice touch (we love mushrooms). The penny bun biscuit that topped the beef tartare can be described as giant Chex mix rye chips, shaped like mushrooms. A playful and creative touch. -Roasted Long Island Duck: Hands down, BEST duck (aside from Hong Kong style duck) that we have ever had. The presentation of the duck was much like a thick slab of pork belly, and the cut had the juiciness and richness of pork belly, which we've never experienced with roasted duck. It was the most tender and succulent duck and we highly highly recommend it. The foie gras skewer was a surprising addition but paired nicely with the duck to yield a rich mouthful. -Braised Atlantic Halibut: Great dish that was overshadowed by the perfect duck. The halibut had a nice crispy sear on the top. We really enjoyed the chestnut gnocchi, which was smooth in consistency. The drink menu was filled with creative cocktails. My French Connection, served in a rustic tin moscow mule-like cup, was sweet and fragrant. I appreciated the candied ginger that topped the drink. The American Cereal Killer was more whiskey than I would like, since I was drawn to the "cereal milk" that it boasted. From the uncomfortably quiet and empty dining room to the embarrassing service, this is the first Michelin-starred establishment that has caused me to reconsider the integrity of Michelin rankings and make me wonder just who it is that has to be bribed to get these stars. The Clocktower will make me take pause before considering any other one star from here on out. To be fair, I had the Afternoon Tea service, rather than dinner or lunch, but if you're open during those hours, you must meet your guests' expectations. The Clocktower, on the other hand, clearly views 3-5pm from Friday to Sunday as an opportunity to slack on food and service, and as a ripe opportunity to bilk $55 from their guests on a pre fixe "Afternoon Tea" service. Now, I've never had a proper "Afternoon Tea" in the British style, but I thought the prospect was intriguing at the very least. Fancy little munchies, teas of various sorts (of which I know very little), and just the right amount of pretension in the air could make the whole ritual enjoyable, or maybe, as Wikipedia even put it, "taken as a treat in a hotel" after a particularly busy week. The Clocktower, which offers "tastes of contemporary London" just steps away from Madison Square Park according to its website (not to mention the whole Michelin star thing) seemed like the perfect place to make my initial foray into pretentious Anglophile tea sipping. I could not have been more wrong. The visit started off well enough, finding the admittedly gorgeous spiral staircase in the more vibrant downstairs bar area of the hotel and being greeted by name by the host. Once seated in the ghost town of a dining room, we received the pre fixe menu consisting of your expected Afternoon Tea fare; various sandwiches, biscuits, jams, and the like. There were a number of teas to choose from as well. We immediately noticed that my guest and I had two different tea menus; no big deal, I would have never known about the Earl Grey option had I dined alone, but I opted for the White tea ($5 supp) anyway. Still, odd that a place that has a Michelin star doesn't have conforming menus. It's fine dining, not *Applebee's Daily Lunch Special. Once the food made it to the table (which felt like an eternity given we didn't have any choices to make, but in a large, silent room with only one other table of guests, could have been an acceptable wait) we immediately noticed that the sandwiches didn't match what was on either of our menus (presumably there is a different, third menu that neither of us received where all the sandwiches come on white bread and the desserts are just a series of question marks). We asked the server about this discrepancy, who insisted on checking the menu with us (presumably in the event we couldn't read the word "pumpernickel" or didn't understand that pumpernickel, wheat, and rye breads all looked different than white bread), and had no real explanation. Ok, then. Moving on to desserts, I couldn't even tell you what we ate. Just look at the menu description and look what was served on the little tiered thing. Do you see any tarts? (tart - a baked dish consisting of a filling over a pastry base). How about anything remotely resembling a sandwich? Me either. Given the experience with the sandwich bread situation, I didn't bother asking what the desserts were. I'm just grateful I don't have a food allergy; the Clocktower would be a VERY dangerous place to eat. On top of everything else, as others have noted, it took quite some time to find a server to ask for the check. This was not an Afternoon Tea experience by any stretch of the imagination; this was a way for the Clocktower to repackage old food as Afternoon Tea hors d'oeuvres and trick you into paying $55 for what would otherwise be their garbage (the gastrointestinal distress that followed from eating their aged seafood sandwiches support this theory). The servers (and the kitchen for that matter) have no idea what the menu says or offers; there is no "experience" whatsoever (aka explanation of the tea, the food, the ritual, etc.); and the entire thing takes place in an uncomfortably large and silent dining room. Unless you're into having tea at the Hotel California (but with worse food, no Eagles song, and nothing supernatural about it), this place probably won't be for you. *this is an unfair insult to Applebee's, whose staff is often quite familiar with the specials. read more

We absolutely loved the afternoon tea. I had no idea what to expect as I had never done something like this before. Would it be stuffy? Pretentious? Boring? None of the above! We sat down in a fabulously decorated room and was immediately attended to by a fun waiter who gave us just the right amount of attention the whole time. Only a few tables were populated so the setting felt very intimate. The tea selection was varied and thankfully included a couple non-caffeinated varieties. The tea was accompanied by a healthy amount of savories, sweets, and honeys. All were appropriate for a proper afternoon tea and were clearly made with attention to detail. Had dinner here last weekend for F's birthday. I like the ambiance in here; dim and romantic. The high ceilings and the wall to wall gold framed images make quite a statement. We were told by the hostess that we only had until 9:15 until they had another party booked for the table. It's always annoying to hear this; I'm sure it's a necessary practice so that they can seat as many parties as possible in a night, but please keep that practice behind closed doors. In the end, there were plenty of tables open and we weren't asked to leave... but in the back of our minds, it was lingering there and we opted not to order extra drinks after we finished our bottle of wine. They started us off with a small glass of sparkling wine because they knew we were there to celebrate a birthday, which was very nice. We ordered the $125 seafood platter to start. It read like it would be huge and at that price point we thought it would be so we didn't order any additional appetizers... but it turned out to be very small. I'm sure I could've easily finished the whole platter myself. I ordered the pork chop. It was well cooked, but there was lots of fat - and in the dimness of the restaurant, you couldn't always see if it was meat or fat. I don't eat the fat on meats so whenever I got a bite of fat, I had to suppress the urge to spit it out (fancy place as it is). But others who love fat might like this; A joked that it sounds delicious. Friends ordered the duck, lamb and burger and all seemed to enjoy their dishes. F got the pistachio soufflé. This takes 20 minutes to make but it's worth the wait. It was light, fluffy and delicious. A and I shared the warm mango pudding. Texturally, I thought it was kinda weird and flavor wise, there was nothing special about it. F and J tried a bite each, but no one on the table liked the dish much. Most of it was left. The service isn't very warm or affable. It started out very friendly when we got the sparkling wine and waters... but we waited a while before a waiter came to take our order and even then, he only came by after we waved him over. (We had been told we had to leave by a certain time, so we wanted to make sure we can place our appetizer order early so we would have timers leisurely enjoy our entrées.) When he came by, he told us he would prefer if we ordered everything all together instead of just the appetizer cuz it would make things easier. Ok. Luckily, by the time he arrived to our table, we all knew what we wanted so it was fine. Overall, we had a solid 3 star experience. The chef has a Michelin star restaurant in the UK, so I am glad we tried it, but I don't think I will be looking to dine there if I'm ever visiting the country based on this dining experience. read more

Chewy, flavorful.... the pieces were big but I think I had at least 2 if not 3. SO GOOD. I had the French Connection which tasted like a Moscow Mule. This is a great place. Other five star restaurants can't compare. This is a one Michelin star place and they deserve it. The architecture and ambiance is enough of a reason to to go, the food is just a bonus. The spiraling staircase is a great photo op, so take plenty. We heard a rumor that they have the best fries. We didn't get them when we went but we will definitely come back for them. The food we did order, however, was fantastic. There isnt anything in their menu we don't want to try. Service : the waiter was excellent and all staff members were very polite. They knew the menu and were able to answer all my questions. They do have a som if you need one. We requested for a specific type of table on our reservation and we're able to accommodate. Food : Ordered 1/2 dozen Kumamoto oysters, Berners Tavern Macaroni and cheese (morels, slow-cooked ox cheek), and the Long Island duck (roasted hen of the woods mushroom, confit leg, kohlrabi and peach salad). Every dish tastes delicious. The saltiness of the duck is perfectly balanced when you eat it with the kohlrabi. At the bottom of the kohlrabi they have more duck which was a nice surprise. My fiance and I are from the philly area and are big Stephen Starr fans so while we were visiting NYC we wanted to try one of his restaurants and had heard good things about the clocktower. The overall atmosphere was cozy and moody with soft light that reminded me of being in an old, grand library. The service was exceptional throughout the meal. My fiance and I both tried a cocktail to start and then I switched to a glass of wine with dinner. All the beverages were great. We started with the scallops and the beef tartare. Both appetizers were delicious but the scallops were especially tasty and cooked perfectly. For dinner we decided to share the 40 day dry aged prime rib which was also delicious plus the sides were amazing too, especially the foie gras salad. my fiance, who likes potatoes more than me, thought the potato gratin was exceptional. I came here with my girlfriend for the Thanksgiving Prix fixe dinner. The stairs to the restaurant remind me of an actual Clock Tower. But strangely I was hoping there will be actual clocks at the restaurant, but there were mainly just pictures. Food: The food was really good specifically the Scallops and the New York Stripe (which was an additional $20). What we both really liked was the free bread that they gave us in the beginning. Love it when my "celery like soup" is actually poured table side instead of sloshed through a busy dining room. Honestly have no idea how some people are allowed to review fine dining experiences. Loved my first experience at The Clocktower! I went on a short lunch break for my birthday that my manager took me to. Unfortunately we didn't have a ton of time or we would have ordered more courses but what we had was great. The sourdough bread they bring out is delicious and perfectly hot out the oven. For my meal I ordered the pan seared cod which was so delicious I was spooning the sauce into my mouth like soup when the fish was gone. My boss had the burrata salad which was quite good. Word of note is that the portions are quite small for the price but very good. They brought me out a chocolate cake for a birthday dessert that was really good, and finished us off with scottish shortbread and English toffee treats that were delicious. The ambiance is really cool with a beautiful bar and billiard room and gold picture frames all around. This is a great spot for a business lunch or happy hour. read more
