The clay pit was mediocre. The buffet was not serve yourself, which made for an awkward exchange when trying to decide what I wanted. The rice was not the typical basmati that most restaurants serve. It appeared to be a medium grain of low quality. The curries were not spicy at all. Not even a little bit. But on a positive note, the naan bread was delicious and served piping hot. The servers were polite as well. If the clay pit can fix these problems and improve the tables and seats used, it will be a very good restaurant. read more

My first visit to this restaurant. Ate the lunch buffet. Some of the best Indian food I have ever eaten. The food was fresh, well prepared and not too spicy. Spices were available to add heat if you wanted to do so. The staff was friendly and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend this to my friends and family. I wasn't too fond of my first experience here. I guess with any buffet style food you get what you pay for, even though it's $11.50 per person. The food that was sitting out looked like it had been there for awhile. The fruits were literally just rotting in front of our eyes. Like another reviewer mentioned, their food is very saucy. I felt like the tikki masala had SO much curry and a few pieces of chicken. The rice was subpar, not very fresh. The only thing I did enjoy was the nan because it seemed like it was fresh. I also sat there for awhile before getting up and refilling my own drink when the waitress said she would fill it up for me. All in all, I probably won't be back. read more

As we say up north, the food was "wicked" salty. Naan was good, pakoras were really salty but otherwise had good flavor. Played it safe and had chicken tikka masala and I have had better. Not bad, just not the depth of flavor I am accustomed to with Indian cuisine. When I'm craving Indian food and can't make it into Nashville, The Clay Pit is pretty good. You can eat a decent meal for around 10 bucks and you'll be in and out in under 20 minutes. I'm happy they've been able to make it in this overly "restauranted" city. read more

Please try this place. You will not regret it. The staff is so nice! They really make you feel welcome, not like some of these other places where they feel like they are doing you a favor by taking your money. The people here remember us and what we like and are always smiling. We eat here every week or two, my wife and kids love it. The buffet is excellent, usually a good selection. Stuff on the buffet is not too spicy/hot so feel free to try a bit of everything. If you want hot they will make it that way for you. I have not had anything here I didn't like. My favs are chicken Tika masala, lamb Keema and the cabbage. Desserts are fantastic as well. One buffet to-go container filled will easily feed 2 adults. read more

I went to this restaurant recently. It is very small and far away from Nashville (25 miles). The food is really good. We ordered samosas (very good), fish tikka, chicken tikka masala, naans, sweet lassi, alu parata. I liked the food. They were very friendly and took care of us very well. Nice little restaurant. It is not the best but definitely worth trying every now and then. If you are MTSU student, you can have some discount. read more

I'm a regular customer and a very big fan. The staff is friendly, and the food is always delicious. The garlic naan is a treat even though the buffet isn't extensive, every dish is good. They claim to make everything from scratch and I believe it. My biggest problem is not overdoing it on the buffet -- no self-control! I feel lucky to have them in Boro. I don't even know where to start. Balvir and Max and everyone at Clay Pit are fantastic. They catered our vegetarian wedding at Camp Marymount in Fairview and they even pleased the meat eaters in the crowd - my wife and I lived in San Francisco for years (home to arguably a pretty fantastic food scene) and I can objectively say that Clay Pit's palak paneer is more delicious than any we had in SF. Everyone in attendance has been extremelely complimentary and just LOVED the supper. Balvir surprised us with several extra dishes, including some paneer pockets which were new to us, and turned out to be a new favorite. We are very grateful for his kindness, attention to detail, and delicious cooking for our wedding. We cannot recommend the clay pit enough as a restaurant, as a caterer, and as a group of lovely people. Thank you so much! read more

Quick take: Great, tasty, homey food, served piping hot from the kitchen. The menu is not an overwhelming list of Americanized Indian standards. It's comparatively small but still plenty of recognizable standbys. The standouts here are garlic naan, chicken biriyani, and dal fry. This is our favorite Indian resto in Murfreesboro. Yes, there are only two, but if this were the only one, we'd still really like it here. The food is good. Selection of Indian and other imported beers. Heat available from 1-10. We understand serious chili heads can kick it up to 15. For us, 8 was pleasingly spicy hot with 5 being mild. Buffet available at night. That was a new one for us. We ordered from the menu to take advantage of more diversity. Drinks: Mango lassis Kingfisher beer Appetizers: -Samosa chat - crispies with red onion, cumin - tasty, fresh bites of red onion; this would be great paired woth a naan for lunch. It's a little heavy as an appetizer. -Bel puri-garbanzo beans with green chutney-tasty melange of fresh flavors. A bit heavy as an appetizer. With a naan or puri, this would be perfect as a meal. -Vegetable pakora-decently light, battered and fried vegetables. Swagruha still makes the best, lightly dredged, hot, and crispy. Clay Pit is decent. Dishes: -Chicken Tikka-super mild for my number two son whose spice of choice is wasabi for now -- served sizzlin on a hot plate with onions and peppers and finished with butter-delightful surprise--he loves onions and peppers so this was a hit -Chole Peshwari-8-spicy soured garbanzos, best eaten with puri (fried bread). The flavorings were a bit muddied. I was expecting the piquant taste of tamarind against onion but the spices seemed to struggle and fall flat. -Paneer Burjhi-5-this was new. Smashed paneer (cheese) with onion and spices. This was like a chunky Indian queso. Loved this. -Chicken Biriyani-8-tender chicken, no hesitation in the spices for this dish. Nice and dry, fluffy rice-sharply flavored. -Dal Fry-8-we ordered this hot and it came with whole roasted chilis floating inside. Yesss! The texture was great--not soupy and not too thick. Garlicky, smooth slightly fatty. -Rogan Josh-10-lamb in gravy-this was definitely hot spicy. The texture of the lamb was odd with little flavor. Breads: -Garlic naan - crispy edges and chewy -Aloo paratha - heavy wheat rounds stuffed with potato -Puri - puffy, piping hot--as expected read more

I love Indian food and could eat it every day. A Pakistani friend of mine says he judges restaurants by their dal, and The Clay Pit makes creamy, spicy dal that is better than any I've every had, and certainly better than my attempts to make it at home. My favorite Indian dish is aloo gobi, and between that and the dal, I could really never eat anything else and be happy. The aloo gobi is a perfectly cooked combination of cauliflower and potatoes that I've never seen offered on their buffet but can be ordered as an entree. It's a small restaurant, but I've never had a problem getting a table, and the employees are very nice and willing to offer suggestions. It can be a bit pricey only because the items above are both typically offered as entrees, but if dal is on the buffet line, I'm able to order it as a side and save a few dollars. Honestly this is a hole in the wall. I have been eating Indian food since I was a kid in the Chicago area, but this food was so sloppy and not a real buffet. They serve you and there is no salad or dessert with the buffet like the one in Cool Springs. We will not eat there again. Visit Bombay, it is much better. If you're vegan like me good luck trying to get them to tell you what's in their dishes. read more

The owner stopped by half way through the meal to check on me, and I had to ask why is there no naan on the buffet. Then I was offered the naan. That too was bland. Didn't like the fact that the buffet was not open to the customer and was taken to our plate of by the waiter - lost all the fun of buffet where you can pick and choose yourselves. Let's talk about the food then, really liked the saag paneer, the stable. Vegetable Korma was OK and the pepper with potato dish was perhaps the favorite.
