Taking place every 4 - 5 weeks at the great Modernist Hammersmith Town Hall, The Vintage Fashion Fair is where celebrities, stylists and many of London's overpriced vintage boutiques go to get their vintage wares. For a first timer the fair can be a little overwhelming, with dozens of knowledgeable sellers offering vintage fashion, accessories and textiles dating from Victorian times to the eighties and early nineties. Prices, predictably, are not cheap, but then this is high-end vintage. An original full length seventies Janice Wainwright dress will set you back around £100, a vintage Yves Saint Laurent jacket around £250 and original costume jewellery by the likes of Kenneth Jay Lane and Givenchy starts at around £50. My only criticism is the changing room situation. Although my reticence about stripping in front of dozens of other shoppers has decreased a little over years of buying at sample sales, the incongruity of trying on sixties Parisian couture in a town hall's toilets was not lost on me. Nevertheless, this hallowed fair is definitely worth a visit. Even if only for a browse because its friendly, charming sellers and magical atmosphere make this much more than a vintage shopping trip, The Vintage Fashion Fair is an experience.

Though Uniqlo isn't my cup of tea. With London's cold weather I've come to appreciate their Heat Tech line. £10 for super thin undershirts that add warmth and not bulk. Love that! They also have jeans that have the Heat Tech Material woven into the jeans but i never thought it would get cold enough for that here. I was wrong. I'll be back for the jeans later.

Today was the first time I have ever left a queue in a shop as a result of waiting for too long to purchase my selections. After waiting for a few minutes without any progress, one elderly person in the queue did ask if they could fill the other four cashier desks beyond the three that were already active which the cashier girl ignored for about 2 minutes before she announced they needed help?! What a joke. I left at this point, frustrated at how ineffectively the way this shop seems to be run. I was ready to spend my hard earned money and instead left feeling frustrated.

Being a fashion student fabric is very important!…read more There are loads of fabric shops in Soho, as I have already detailed and many more in Bricklane and Shepherds Bush. A one fabrics is deceivingly huge! The shop window is filled with particularly distasteful fabrics draped (or should I say hanging) from the ceiling and occasionally a mannequin or two wrapped in fabric. As you walk in you are hit by the abundance of fabric form the floor to the ceiling rolls and rolls of fabric stacked. As you progress into the shop you realise that there is another whole shop parallel to it through an archway! Full or even more fabrics rolls in piles on the floor, standing piles in corners, fabrics stacked everywhere! Fantastic selection of netting, nylons and polyesters. The staff are extremely friendly and quite happy to give you samples and try and help you out with the fibre content - but don't expect them to know! Many fabrics are just bought, so they themselves do not know! Check it out - it might inspire you to do a little sewing....!
