I went to Claddagh's for the first time with high hopes of it being a good Irish pub. I guess I should have not gone to an Irish pub on St. Patrick's day. Unfortunately, the place was a dump. I already knew going in that it was going to be packed and the service would be slower, but the place was a wreck. First - 10$ cover fee which was fine but the bands barely played and were not even Irish themed. Second- the food was pretty good and the waitress was really trying her best. ( it was basically only her working.) No one knew what food went to what table. Third- it should have been advertised that there would be a 20% event fee on all purchases. Fourth- the bathroom(there was only a single so the lines were super long for the amount of people there) had shit every where and no employee had any entrance of cleaning it. Honestly not the experience I was hoping for. I've been to some pretty good Irish pubs. Claddagh's was not one of them. What has happened to this once premier establishment? I was skeptical of the downward spiral of the reviews. The greetings and bar service were spectacular. So if you are just getting drinks, you will be met warmly and given good service. ALL I asked for was extra tartar sauce for the Fish & Chips. Server requested it. She also recommended that I put the sauce on the side for my grilled chicken. Wonderful. The execution by the kitchen staff failed. No extra tartar sauce. No sauce on the side for my grilled chicken. Very basic instructions not executed. Sorry, but when I leave a 50% tip, I expected more. No quality check before giving me my meal. Yes, it is the little things. That's what brings repeat customers. Cold, dreary day so we thought we'd head out for some comfort food. My husband is British and we both adore many dishes from the UK. Had the fish n chips (always a good bet) and the chicken rasher bacon boxty.(a new to me fave) On our last visit I had a boxty for the first time and had the Reuben one. So yummy! Very skimpy portions of ketchup and tartar sauce. We had to ask for more but we were nearly finished with the dish by the time we saw someone to ask for more. We opted for bread pudding since my husband is a big fan of bread pudding in general but I cannot recommend this one. It has a congealed look and texture and just did not hit the mark at all. A squirt of canned whipped cream didn't do anything to add to the experience. Bread pudding is so easy to make, not sure why this one was just so...well, odd. Service was great and the place was quite empty given the rainy day so I can't really speak to the ambiance other than it was a bit bright for a dinner service. There are pros and cons to this place. Pros: I've enjoyed my food each time I go here. They have a great menu with a lot of hearty options. I've been here for lunch, brunch, and dinner. Their Fish and Chips is delicious and they'll sometimes run specials, like a special salmon dish, that are definitely worth trying. Cons: their evening staff seems to be taking a "masks optional" approach during COVID. I complained after my first visit when no staff was wearing masks and upon returning, was surprised to see only one staff member wearing a mask. Also, service has been slow the last few times I've been here. Overall, the food is great. (2.5 stars) Named for a traditional Irish ring and boasting an equally traditional (for the most part) menu, the Claddagh has the Gaelic pub look down cold, an image solidified by the tricolours displayed amid the wood-and-brick interior. Whatever its bonafides, however, the Claddagh offers a fairly underwhelming experience. My first visit here was to place and pick up a takeout order. The hostess who greeted me was amiable, but none of the front-of-house staff seemed to be wearing masks. The food also took a few minutes longer than estimated though it wasn't an unreasonable wait by any means. I went with fried green tomatoes, a half-order of fish and chips, and a half-order of shepherd's pie to feed two. Though the half-orders were billed as enough food for anyone who wasn't starving, portion sizes skewed small. Prices also seemed inflated for the restaurant's concept. Our half orders were $10 apiece with full orders starting in the mid-teens. The fried green tomatoes, an app, ran $11.49. A good value this is not, but it would be pardonable for top-notch food. On that account, The Claddagh is a mixed bag. The fried green tomatoes, thickly battered and accompanied by a deliciously zesty smoked gouda pimento, were very good and well worth it. The fish, a beer battered cod, was likewise battered well and nicely crisped without being dry inside. The shepherd's pie was heartily satisfying though the flavors were a bit understated. On the other hand, the sides ranged from forgettable (slaw) to bad (flavorless, freezer fry-grade chips). The Claddagh's menu appeal and the meal's high notes were enough for me to not write this place off completely, but if I return, it will be with lowered expectations. read more

The concept of the Irish pub, if carried out in the same manner as the pubs actually found in Ireland, is a beautiful thing. To meet such standards, there are things a patron should expect; among them, the following -- Traditional, classic interior appearance and furnishings Welcoming atmosphere Attentiveness and friendliness in service A proper selection of libations Classic, flavorful food offerings that fill the plate and the appetite So if these are the measures by which we should determine the authenticity and value of an Irish pub, how does High Point's Claddagh measure up? As for the setting, it feels a bit more like a hometown sports bar. There's not really the sense of polish and pride in either the layout or the furnishings that one finds in the prototypical pub. It's not a dive bar feel, mind you, but the ambiance doesn't match what I expect from a place labeling itself as an Irish pub. This carries over to the atmosphere and staff as well. Yes, they'll get your order, and in my experiences they'll get it right. But there's no heart in what they're doing, no particular rush to tend to the customer, no effort towards conversation except to ask what you want. Again, it just doesn't line up with my experiences in other quality pubs stateside or Ireland. I've even noticed that folks who appear to be frequent visitors don't even seem to get engaged by the staff, so this doesn't even feel like it's got a neighborhood bar vibe. The bar seems reasonably well stocked, and as best I can tell the drafts, bottles, and mixed concoctions they offer are appropriate. But of course I will judge the bar setting quite heavily on the Guinness they pour. And a place calling itself an Irish pub should not give out Guinness in anything but true imperial pints. The price they're charging for a glass certainly demands a REAL pint and not one of those sissy pints they're hawking. When it comes to the food, it's been a mixed bag for me. I've had a few appetizers here and they've been...okay. By that I mean they're not bad, but I get the sense they're just buying stuff from a supplier rather than crafting the food from their own refined recipes. As for the entrees, well, their shepherd's pie is more like a poor version of cottage pie, and the stew lacks flavor. Sure, maybe I'm setting my sights too high. Maybe I've got unreasonable expectations. But I think when you call yourself something that has a well defined identity, you should make it more than just a name; there ought to be an effort to not only meet the mark but to excel in it. That's especially true in a region where there aren't many other options for those seeking the pub experience. These folks have an opportunity to make themselves something special in the Triad, and yet they aren't taking advantage of it. read more

I haven't been to the Claddagh in quite a while. I came by for a lunch recently and ate on the patio. I really do like Irish pubs because the food and beer selection is usually pretty good and these places always feel more down to earth. I had the fish and chips which came with some slaw and fries. The slaw was mid-grade; nothing to write home about. The fries were fine as well. The fish was good, cooked right and it had nice flavor. The waitress that served us was super friendly and always available too. I'll probably return the next time it is convenient. read more

We came for the Valentine's Day special, but I have to say I was more than impressed with everything experienced tonight. We started with the Ruben and Rachel egg roll appetizers which were satisfying. My wife ordered the Parmesan Pesto Salmon which she loved, stating it was the best salmon she has had, ever. I ordered the Bacon and Blue cheese crusted N.Y. Strip. I'm a ribeye guy but this did not disappoint. In fact it was at the top of my list for flavor, tenderness and size. It's a generous cut grilled to perfection. Not to mention we finished our date with a huge slice of Irish Double Fudge Chocolate Cake. All in all it was a very memorable night out. This is a very, very solid 4. I've had the exact same thing - twice. Once via delivery, and once in the pub. Half-order of Fish & Chips. The cole slaw is fantastic. It managed to be creamy without being too wet. The chips aka french fries, were cooked to perfection. The cod, perfectly beer-battered and prepared. Portions are very big (especially for a half order) and super fast. The malt vinegar makes it all finish nicely. The service was great. I plan to try more of the menu and some brews (although Guinness is on tap and it's hard to say no to that!) The location is a bit odd and access is a little weird. I am sure the patio is full when it is summertime and the decor is exactly what you'd expect for an Irish-style pub. They have a sister branch in Asheville as well. Had a hidden fee automatic charge for bar service. Was ask why when I ordered food and ice water. Was told later by another waiter I had to ask for the bar tip charge to be taken off. (approx 2.50 additional charge added to my bill and another person's bill). Once our group placed their food orders, there was a significant delay in bringing the food to our tables. 90% of those in attendance had to drive 1.5 hours + after the meal, so most of the persons were getting concerned about the wait to eat. The members of the group that ordered from the brunch menu seemed to be the most disappointed in their food. I ordered the corned beef hash. My poached eggs were cooked correctly, but others with poached eggs found the eggs to be overcooked. My item was heavy on potatoes and lacking in the "hash". Definitely nicer in the dining area than expected. Came here for dinner tonight but wasn't terribly hungry...so I just opted for the sesame seared ahi tuna appetizer and a Guinness. The ahi tuna was a very generous portion for an appetizer and it was decent - not a ton of flavor but served very rare (which was how I asked for it). Guinness was a perfect pour. (This IS an Irish Pub, after all...). My dining companions had the Shepard's Pie and the Corned Beef and Cabbage. The Shepard's Pie was completely devoured and the report on the Corned Beef and Cabbage was that it was OK. The dining area was very nice....table cloths and the room was pretty quiet. Service was decent; our waitress seemed a little bit green as upon her first visit she asked if we were ready to order....even before we had a chance to figure out what we might want to drink. The person that seated us...maybe a manager or owner (?)....really had her act together. She went through the drink menu, specials...etc. She also delivered our drinks and was very nice.
