We loved the recommendation from the waiter to get the Cream of Crab & Maryland crab soup half & half. It was a delicious combo. I could eat that every night especially on a cold fall evening. As my meal, I ate the beef carpaccio which melted in my mouth. Another winner. My hubby got a fish special that he couldn't stop raving about. He is my toughest critic. The Choptank was a HUGE disappointment. On this particular day (Labor Day), they weren't accepting reservations so we added our name to the list for outdoor seating. The wait time was about 45 minutes, which was to be expected. While waiting, I ordered an Orange Crush at the upstairs bar. Service was great but the Crush lacked that fresh-squeezed taste you'd expect. Upon being seated at our table, we were promptly greeted by our server, Britany H. After perusing the menu, we decided on the following: half dozen raw oysters, Fried Calamari, and Black Angus Burger. The calamari arrived first - greasy, bland, more peppers than actual calamari. After approximately 30 minutes (and several inquiries), we were told that the oysters needed to be "re-iced" because they had been misplaced. In other words, the runner didn't know where to deliver them and they sat out somewhere - not ideal for oysters on a warm day. Either way, our server made it right by putting in and bringing a fresh order. As for the burger, it was uninspiring... oh, and the fries were WAY over salted. For the price point, I expected a more satisfying experience. Thankfully, our server was nice enough to comp the calamari and oysters. I have been to this place 3 times primarily because of the location. Unfortunately this restaurant has a habit of turning every dish into a dessert. They put either honey or something equally sweet on a variety of food. Even standard things like roasted chicken or hot wings come drenched in some type of sweet syrup. If roasted chicken and hot wings are considered desserts than maybe they need to be listed in the desserts section along with ice cream and chocolate cake. I visited this restaurant with my homegirl and we had a great time. I don't really eat fish a lot, but when I tell you, the Bronzino change my entire thought process on fish. I tried the Bronzino and it was by far the best fish I've ever had it was so tender and juicy not dry at all. Our waiter was super great with suggestions being that I'm not a big fish eater. They were super helpful and recommending the butter sauce, which I have been thinking about ever since we left. I'm chuckling writing this review. My significant other always introduces new places to me. I lied and said I never had been to Choptank, only to be reminded once we arrived that I've been a couple of times. Yelp reminded me too with the check in feature. For date night on Saturday, we ventured to Annapolis. We scored a parking right in front. Lucky! We didn't even have to valet. (They do offer valet on the main entrance side.) We were late for our reservation but the host had no issue and even sat us outside like we requested. My view is always beautiful sitting across my Beau but Saturday was extra special with the view of the yachts and water. For starters we had to have oysters, Oysters Rockefeller to be exact. I always know when my Beau likes them because he doesn't hesitate to eat mine if I leave them alone too long on the plate. Safe to say these were a hit! I wasn't particularly hungry so my lobster roll got a new home. My Beau loved it. To be honest it was one of the BEST lobster rolls in the DMV area that I've had. The lobster was so soft! My Beau got the 8oz Black Angus Flatiron. He paired it with Brussel sprouts. He liked it but packed it since he had to eat my meal. I'm a BIG on desserts. My Beau said he'd share with me so we picked his choice, cheesecake. It was delicious! I didn't eat my food but I sure did eat the cheesecake. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday and while most of the tables were open, they told us they only had one server for each level so most of it was blocked off but we grabbed a seat at the bar. We arrived at 12:50 pm and they took our drink order right away. At 1:00 pm we asked if we could place an order. Our appetizer came out around 1:15 pm. Around 1:45, we asked for an update on our food and they told us it was being prepared. It finally came out at 2:10, over an hour after we placed the order. They likely forgot to put it in rather than it taking that long to cook because they were just fish sandwiches. When the food arrived, they brought fries instead of a salad which was annoying but not the end of the world. A few things to note: - The ambiance is great and they did a really nice job with the decor. You can't beat the view. - We had to ask for water a few times and the waiters/bar staff were not very attentive - The cream of crab soup was delicious. The calamari was alright, nothing special - lobster roll was 7/10. I went on a very busy Friday lunch and they seated me on the rooftop with "no guarantee of full shade," but the staff made all the umbrellas work so that everyone was comfortable and shaded. Visited for a chill birthday dinner and here's my review: The service was excellent-considering how busy they were. We were running behind due to traffic and they kindly pushed back our reservation time (with no issue) because we were celebrating. Our waitress was a joy; she was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very excited to celebrate my birthday. The food came out in a reasonable time but there were some items that required a longer wait. The restaurant itself is in a prime location, it's right on the water so the views are beautiful. It has plenty of SHADED outdoor seating and a very nice rooftop. We sat inside where the music was a vibe but it was a bit loud and hard to hear my partner at times. Tuna Tartare 9/10 - So delicious just a little tricky to eat. I recommend flipping it on its side and eating from the bottom layer to the top layer. Shrimp Ceviche 8/10 (according to my partner) - Fresh, good portion, good flavor; the mango was a nice touch. One or two more taro chips would have been nice. Chilean Sea Bass 9/10 - Excellent flavor and portion. I can't remember what sauce it was served with but it was delicious; it complemented the natural buttery/fatty taste of sea bass (iykyk). Side Salad 0/10 - I was genuinely shocked because it was a simple salad. What made it bad was the fact that it was drowned in olive oil and it was clear the vegetable toppings were cut for aesthetic and not meant to be eaten. Sweet Corn Pudding 7.5/10 - It was really good but very confusing. It's made with jalapeños (completely unexpected) but it contrasts with the sweetness in a pleasant way. Texture-wise it has a slight grit which isn't bad, just feels like a mix between a porridge and pudding. I honestly liked it but I couldn't see how it paired with anything on the menu. I do recommend trying it though! Double Crab Cake Platter 8/10 (according to my partner) - Good size, not a lot of filler, but the chili remoulade was not it. Fries were also pretty good. Birthday Dessert - I was absolutely living for the sea salt ice cream!!!!! This needs to be engraved in the menu so people know to try it. We reserved a table and were seated right away, with plenty open seating around us. We had a table with a bay view which is always the best part to me. Next, we were given water and didn't see our waitress again for about 25-30minutes. This matters as you have to pay for timed parking.She finally took our drink order and we also ordered appetizers. We waited a bit too long for that too. Appetizers :wings were dry and hard with an unfresh taste. There was no easy pull from the bone,.I could tell it was not fresh meat. Horrible! The shrimp were over seasoned with spices and French fries were way too salty and not hot. Our cocktails (2) finally came and the waitress said "that bar" and walked away. My wine was warm like it was sitting in a hot car. At this point I was embarrassed and disappointed because I usually enjoy the food which is to be expected for the price! Main course finally was served . It wasn't bad but just not as good as I expected. The Brussels sprouts were good but again over seasoned and a bit too sweet. My chicken breast was drowning in syrup, and the Mac n cheese was just ok this time. The scallops was said to be good. We ordered dessert. We have really been exploring this summer away from DC, and came up to Annapolis to hang out. We ended up at The Choptank without a reservation and were estimated to wait 45 minutes, but we got lucky and found seats at the bar we were able to grab instead. I would say definitely have a reservation as this place appears to be very popular. They have a large restaurant and still were extremely packed. We ordered the calamari to start and it came out very hot and crisp. The batter was very light on the calamari which was great. We also got the crab cake sandwich and the fish and chips. The crab cake was so flakey and had almost 0 filler so definitely recommend the crab cake. The fish for the fish chips while the fish was very flakey the batter was a bit thick and would have been better with a thinner batter. Other than that one time we noticed everything was great. I had previously visited the Westin hotel in Annapolis on business in 2016, but not this Harbor boat yard or this restaurant. I visited here for the first time to visit the Annual Annapolis Powerboat Show, at the Annapolis Harbor Boat Yard, which was great. We arrived at the harbor boatyard around noon. We reserved our 12 noon lunch at the Choptank restaurant on OpenTable. Choptank is a river located in Maryland, which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay. My party of four arrived at 12 noon. We requested an outside table upstairs overlooking the Annual Annapolis Powerboat Show, which was a nice table under great weather. I started with and enjoyed my two Minehunter martinis with four roses bourbon, averna, pomegranate, cacao, and cardamom for $16. I ended my lunch with a draft Guinness for $8. I also enjoyed my Mahi sandwich with spicy Korean rub, house made asian veggie slaw, hoisin mayo and a side Caesar salad for $28. Teagan P. served us very well although bar service here was very slow. Only one bartender was working downstairs, who could not keep up with the bar service. My total bill was $284 including 20% gratuity. After paying our bill I realized this restaurant is part of the Atlas Restaurant Group Rewards program, which I will investigate. The quasi stuffy atmosphere and the terrible food are just a poor combination, and this is yet another tourist trap in Naptown. The only redeeming quality are the nice aerial views of Annapolis: people watching, boat watching, and seeing the Ego Alley, and Spa Creek, but the fun stops there. The bartender at the bottom level did not make it clear that we needed a reservation to sit upstairs in the outside section and kept mentioning sitting at the bar but was not clear and specific with informing us that we needed to ask staff and or create a reservation to sit outside. With that said, there were communication issues even upstairs when we wanted to sit outside at a table and had to explain the issue to the hostess upstairs. After some miscommunication, we finally ended up getting seated. The server was a bit more lively towards others but was standard with us nothing bad but nothing that stood out positively. The issue is the horrible food. My chicken sandwich was crunchy and just did not have a good seasoning, sauce to it. I have had far better chicken sandwiches either by me cooking them or from McDonalds. My mother's lobster roll was overly sauced and seasoned and was far inferior to that of Mason's Lobster Roll down the street from here. The salad had way too much sauce and was salty as were the other food. The fries were the best food. The food menu tries to be too exotic and fancy, but the taste leaves a lot to be desired. The food really has to step up here especially with the high cost and price. The quality just is not there. The place tries to come across as stuffy, but is a glamor tourist hole in the wall drinking hole where there will be drinking and partying lowkey. The place has an identity issue if it wants to be upscale or divey. All in all I would not recommend. You don't need the aerial view just enjoy the view of Annapolis at Ego Alley or take one of the cruises. Aerial view is not worth the mediocrity and or very poor qualities here at Choptank. My wife and I enjoyed a perfect late spring morning in Annapolis. Choptank's patio was inviting and shaded from the sun with a light breeze. The service was friendly and efficient but not very engaged. We ordered mimosas while we waited for the entrees. They were refreshing and chilled. My "Choptank Breakfast" was amazing; the eggs were cooked to perfection and the bacon was amazingly crispy. The surprise came with the potatoes-they were incredible. There was a mix of regular cubed potatoes and sweet potatoes. My wife enjoyed her "Choptank BLT." It was a lot of food. The restaurant is located right on the canal and you can watch the party boats, ferries and water taxis speed by while eating and sipping. I took my Honey to Choptank for his well deserved birthday dinner. We started the evening with a glass of delicious Pinot Grigio & Cabernet while briefly waiting for our table. We were escorted to our outdoor table on the second floor by the sweet hostess! When we arrived to our table, we both were impressed with the view of the water & the sexy atmosphere. We began our dinner with cucumber gin gimlets & we ordered oysters and calamari. Both were fresh and the calamari was flash fried to perfection. I did add red crushed peppers since I like spicy foods. The toasted baguette bread was well seasoned and a delicious treat to use in order to sop up the flavorful broth! If I were trying to impress an out-of-town guest I might go here for a drink, but we'd go elsewhere for dinner. Fine dining this is not (but at $100 pp, it should be). In both food and ambience The Choptank is more of a glorified bar & grill. The house cocktails were OK, but rather sweet and not special. The steamed seafood sampler was overcooked and the lobster shells almost devoid of meat. If the menu is offering ceviché, the chef needs to learn how to prepare ceviché. Ours was more like poke, or sashimi mixed into a tangy sauce. The Porterhouse steak we ordered med. well done was undercooked, but couldn't be sent back because the kitchen cut it into bite-sized pieces. I'm not 5 years old. Let me cut it myself. At $2 a bite the small rockfish portion was good but overpriced. It needed a sauce, for which we had to pay extra. I get ala carte, but really? The corn pudding would have made a good dessert; it was much too sweet as a side. The Szechuan beans were good. Some heat, but not overly spicey. The cioppino had ample amounts of seafood. Our server was competent and friendly, but with the barroom acoustics of the main dining area she needed to speak much more loudly to be heard by everyone at the table. Desserts were good, but again nothing particularly special. We expected higher prices given the premium location, but the food should also be outstanding. We were just munching since we had dinner reservations elsewhere. Skip the artichokes - they were just bad. The fries were crisp and delicious. My girlfriends recently moved to Annapolis and were raving about Choptank. They wanted me to try it as I'm a fellow foodie as they are. First go round, calamari came out warm- 3/4 of the basket were peppers with less than a handful of calamari Mussels were ok. Old bay honey wings were rubbery and warm Side Caesar over drenched with dressing- my gfs specifically asked for light dressing as they said it comes with a lot of dressing. Fries warm and soggy Blackened mahi was good Tenders were hot and fries were cold- my toddler ate the tenders with no complaints. We spoke to one of the managers and she was able to send back the wings, calamari, fries and side salad to get redone and they came back out better the next time. (All items that were supposed to be hot first go round was hot this time) By the time the food came out for the second time I gave up and ordered a burger with a side salad. I had to ask for the dressing which was tarragon vinaigrette and it tasted completely sour which I then asked for ranch and the ranch was extremely salty. I ate half the burger and I was completely over the experience because I had high hopes but again it could've been an off day. The fortuna cocktail just tasted like margarita heavy on the tequila. This restaurant was recommended to us from a Air BNB we rented. We were very disappointed with the food we ordered. There were 9 of us and we went on for lunch. The fish and chips were burned on one part and sooo oily. My daughter barely ate any of it. I ordered the Choptank steamed platter to share with my granddaughter and while the amount of food in the platter was generous it was extremely overloaded with old bay seasoning to the point you couldn't enjoy the taste of the seafood. Seasonings are meant to enhance the flavor of food not drown it. I had to use the lemon to clean off the seasoning from the corn on the cob. I brought most of the platter home so I could clean it and then eat it. My granddaughter who loves seafood didn't eat any of it. The crab cake on the sandwich tasted like it had been seasoned with vinegar or at least something similar when my husband asked me what I thought. He didn't care for it. The lobster roll & mac and cheese was enjoyed. Overall it was a ehhh experience that didn't justify the cost of the meal to me. The restaurant was very clean, and the staff were nice and pleasant. We were originally told it would be a 45 minute wait, but we only had about a 20-30 minute wait. The reservations were tough to come by but my friend came through with the reservation on the strength of knowing folks lol We were greeted by Tanner as we parked the car and he was soooooo welcoming and gave several menu suggestions that were awesome! We were seated on the top level right by the water. Amazing views and great for people watching! We ordered the crabcake and fried chicken (that wasn't MY order lol) The crabcake was tasty with lump crabmeat and the fries were yummy! Crème brûlée for dessert topped a lovely Saturday afternoon in Annapolis! This place is such a vibe and Tanner was so super cool! We loved him! Great experience! read more
