North Shore Chimneys

My fireplace sat unused for 5-6 years simply due to a work/family schedule that did leave much time…read morefor sitting in front of a roaring fire. Before that period of time, a nightly fire was a sure bet. As time passed, so did my hectic schedule. Wanting to be certain that my fireplace/chimney was safe to use, I contacted North Shore Chimneys on the advice of a co-worker. Ray McClellan and his co-worker actually appeared early for our appointment. He began his inspection with an "on his back" view of the fireplace with an emphasis on the damper and the surrounding masonry. He gave me a quizzical look as he pronounced that the fireplace and the part of the fire shelf and chimney that he could view from the fireplace opening appeared to be clean and free of creosote. To assure himself (and me) that the chimney was indeed ready for a fire, Ray took a ladder from his truck and he and his co-worker climbed onto the roof to take a bird's-eye view of the flu. Flashing a high powered lamp into the flu, he pronounced that my chimney was very clean and that it had no creosote stuck to the walls. Upon returning his ladder to his truck, he stated that I must have burned hardwoods exclusively during past fires (true) and that the fires I built must have burned very hot (also true). That was his explanation for the lack of creosote in my chimney. Ray could have told me that the fireplace needed this and needed that with a cleaning sweep of the chimney recommended for good measure. As the homeowner wanting to keep a safe house for my family, I would have brought his services. To his credit he did what we would wish every contractor and service worker to do... "The right thing." He gave me the green light to have a fire that very evening. Giving me a very fair bill for his time and inspection, Ray left a very happy family looking forward to the evening's fire. I would recommend North Shore Chimneys to my extended family and friends without reservation. Ray McClellan is the real deal.

In my case, on June 30, they came out to repair a couple of cracked joints in my chimney. They were claiming that this was the suspect of the leak in my chimney. All else is fine. About 20 minutes of work for $250 dollars. I implored them to please inspect, with their ladder the very top of the chimney since they were there. I have a chimney cap screwed over the bricks. They insured me that everything was fine. I was happy. Well, the wind storm we got a few weeks ago damaged the stack exhaust pipe. I had to go on the roof to replace the boot/flashing. After I was done, I noticed that the cement on the very top of the brick had a major crack circling the entire chimney. Now I know where the leak is coming from! I called NS Chimney and when I finally got in touch with Ray, he claimed that he could not look at this until the Spring!!! I have to go through the entire winter with water leaking down my chimney. I am not impressed with their customer service nor WHY THEY DID NOT SEE THE PROBLEM WHEN THEY WERE HERE! I am just stating the facts. I have a significant separation of the cement from the brick and they did not bring this to my attention. Nor would they back up their work. You can make your own judgements whether you should employee a contractor like this. They should honor their service and fix their mistakes.
