I could go to Chimes everyday of the week and be happy. Not only do I really like the food (The Works Fries, Breast of Chicken Salad, Fried Pickles, etc.) but the atmosphere is wonderful. It's what everyone sees when they think of Louisiana. The grounds are complete with goats, chickens, a swampy river, and Jax Brewing Company signs. The wait staff is always nice, and they are all knowledgable about specialty beers on tap. I've been happy with every recommendation they've made, both with food and beer. This place is gorgeous! The atmosphere/ambience is 5 stars. The outside is really neat and overall it's a great place to go when the weather is pretty. My family and I came here for lunch after I graduated from Southeastern a few years back, and I thought it was a great place to celebrate. I was looking forward to coming back and I finally did last night. The service started off a bit rough, but it did get much better. I found that the appetizers took a really long time to come out. The food was hit or miss for me. Some items were great and some not so much. The couple I was with ordered onion rings and spinach dip for appetizers. I thought the onion rings were good and the spinach dip was delicious! My boyfriend and I split a cup of sausage and duck gumbo which I thought was good but nothing to write home about. The bun it came with, however, was really good and we askes for another one which came out really fast. For our entree we split the charbroiled catfish topped with a crab Royale sauce. The sauce made the meal pretty expensive, but from the description I couldn't wait to try it. We picked mac and cheese as our side. When the fish came out I was super excited because it was a huge portion and there was a lot of crabmeat. However, the fish and crab really lacked flavor. The sauce was very thin and the fish really needed a thicker sauce to give it some flavor. I thought the mac was really good and rich though! This place is MASSIVE! The parking lot is massive, the dinning area is massive, the beer selection is massive, the outdoor seating area and deck that goes down to the river...all massive!! The food was just ok. Not too special. I got a blackened salmon sandwich with fries. Honestly, if it weren't for the ambiance and beer selection, I would have forgotten about this place about 30 seconds after checking in. The beer list is really impressive. It's really nice too, because they not only list the beers, they sort them by flavoring and give you a description of each "type" of beer. As someone who likes to try new beers, this is a nice way to guide my pallet. The back deck area has two sections, one where you need to be seated with a server and another that's part of the bar area. If you want to sit outside and there's a wait, I would recommend just sitting in the bar area outside (if you can deal with the cigarette smoke). The service took a noticeable bit longer to sit in this section, but with the view and the fact that the bartenders are responsible for this area, it's to be expected. There's a long winding deck system that ends at the river, where people can tie up their boats. Would be a fun pit stop during a day on the water. read more

I have some friends and family that live across the lake so I've had the pleasure of coming here a few times. First, this place is huge! Lots of places to sit inside and outside. If you are there for lunch and not on a time crunch take the time to walk outside down to the river. It's a nice relaxing view to take in for a moment. They also have goats that roam around on the property and let you pet them (at least the goats don't seem to mind) but they ask that you please don't feed them. Now onto the actual restaurant. The menu offers a vast variety of New Orleans fare burgers, seafood, salads and more. You can get boiled crawfish when in season and they were seasoned well, but were a little too soft. So far I've stuck to the salads and were not disappointed. The pecan bread pudding is ridiculously good and I don't even like pecans, but I guess I would eat cardboard if it was made with enough sugar and butter. It's a nice addition to the area and If I lived on this side of the bridge I could see it being a fun place to go for a drink and some apps in addition to a good lunch/dinner spot. read more

Definately not as good as it used to be . The menu is much smaller . There are just not as many options . The appetizer special was fried green beans . They were limp and losing their batter . The charbroiled oysters were tiny ! The actual oyster size was a dime to nickel in size and for $18.50 ! The shrimp poboy was good and the black and blue burger was good . The sweet potato fries were old , limp and mushy . As always their ranch tastes homemade and doesn't taste like it came from a bottle which I always appreciate . read more

This place is great if you want beer. If you are looking for anything other than beer, or in addition to beer, I recommend seeking it elsewhere. Our server was... well, horrible, actually. And since I was also bad at waitressing, normally I'm very understanding. But she was pretty terrible even for my low standards. The food is not on par with other restaurants around Covington, but they sure charge like it is. There are definitely better restaurants in this area. Been to Chimes twice and I love it! The atmosphere is awesome and laid back. The patio at this location is so cool and relaxing. Gotta love Louisiana! You can sit on a deck with a beer and oysters while observing pure nature and wildlife. Not to mention, the food is GOOOODDD!! I had the roast beef po-boy on my last visit and had to stop myself from devouring the entire sandwich for fear of a fullness stomach ache. I can't believe I haven't written about The Chimes yet... If it isn't a pretty day where you can sit on the porch, I wouldn't go here. The food is hit or miss (appetizers = good, beer = good, burger = good, salad = ew, oysters = ew). I did go here with a friend after we finished out shift and we got a beer flight, which was inexpensive and fun. Stopped for lunch here based on a recommendations from friends on our way into New Orleans. Nice looking place. Clean, busy, friendly people. Sitting at the bar, they had a very nice, reasonably impressive, broad in style if smaller in number,selection of beers on tap, along with some additional brands in bottles. I'm of the opinion that quantity does not equal quality. Far better to have fewer, but higher quality beers, than an endless glut of taps in which the beers will sit for days while waiting to win the list lottery. Besides a true gastro pub would naturally want to have a selection of beers which naturally pair well with their menu. Although in truth I saw no evidence that this was in fact the case, nor was I guided by the bartenders in a particular direction. Instead I order a margarita... because it was hot, and where I come from in Southern California, hot weather plus vacation = margaritas. Besides having had more than my fair share of beer the night before, I wanted something a little different. Note to self - Places that don't have large hispanic populations seem to lack a proper understanding of tequila, and what to do with it. To me if you say you have a full bar, you best have a full selection of common types of liquor. Apparently outside of the Southwest, tequila means Quervo or Patron. When I asked for alternatives this place did come up with Don Julio, which is very respectable, but when the margarita arrived it came with Orange Juice, which is not a margarita. Food, the wife was craving some hush-puppies, which when they arrived where as good as any I've had. She order the roast beef po boy, and I had the shrimp poor boy. Hers was classic. Mine came with Ketchup. Kethcup?! WTF?! Who the hell puts ketchup on any kind of po boy let alone a fried shrimp po boy. While it wasn't inedible, it was not anywhere near the level of the roast beef, and not at all the bad-for-me sinful experience that leaves you with a satisfied, guilty grin and your pants undone. Instead it was more McDonald's fillet-o-fish friday in the middle of lent. Not good. When I asked if this was a common treatment of their seafood po boys, one bartender said they'd been doing it from the beginning but other patrons who'd been there before and other servers said they'd never heard of such a thing, nor had one. While again, the sandwich wasn't inedible, it clearly wasn't what I expected or wanted, however there was no offer to correct, remake, bring something else. Sooo... nice looking place, clean place, and while the service wasn't bad, I expected more. I expected, a gastro-pub with booze and food trained servers, who knew not only how a drink should be made, but what they were serving and be able to steer newcomers and regulars down the path of culinary happiness, and if they fail, they recognize the failure is theirs and make it right. If your kitchen does some stupid and weird stuff to a traditional dish that people will expect to come in the traditional fashion, make sure to mention of that. If weird is good, sell a shirt to go with it. If not tell the people who will be tipping you that the chef has been smoking way too much weed and the munchies are his muse. Given the proximity to New Orleans, I'm sure that there are better similar places. read more

Went here for the first time last night. What I liked, that some may not, is it had the feel of a club without the loud music. I ordered the spinach artichoke dip which would be incredible if they removed half the salt used to batter the bow-tie pasta. Other than that it's a great appetizer choice. I also had the raw oysters, which were perfect and reasonably priced. If you're looking for a romantic spot, I don't recommend this place, but if you're looking for a spot to hang out with good food and the potential to meet some people, this place is great. read more

This place gets 5 starts for their beer, prices (especially happy hour), and appetizers and some of the bar type food (burgers and such). It gets 2 stars for the fancier entrees which have mostly been mediocre and an environment that quickly becomes overwhelming with sound and motion to the point I can't talk across the table or have the waitress understand my order which often leads to miscommunication especially since for such a beer selection the staff seems woefully under educated on their beers. Since we love to go to happy hour and get the hell out before it's busy and stay away on Friday and Sat I'll average it to four stars. read more

I love this place! I came here a few months ago when I was visiting my sister and had to come back when I was in Covington again. They have an amazing outside patio with a walkway to the river, which is so cool. It's a gorgeous setting-- sit outside if it's not too cold. My nephew loved going up to the Oyster bar for a complimentary freshly chucked oyster, which was really cool and I thought it was fun that they offered it. We also ordered the grilled oysters which were delicious and full of flavor. My day loves the red beans and rice. I ordered the Duck Gumbo which was amazing and I wish I could make it back home!! Service is very friendly and attentive. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in the area and recommend it to anyone that is in the area. read more

My wife's Birthday was today and she asked to go to Chimes to eat. We have eaten here before a few times and it was always very good. Today was not! Food was not good, the chairbrouled oysters were good but the bowtie pasta and spinach and artichoke dip was terrible as was the steaks, they were horrible. We asked for medium well and they were rare! Also the taste was not good, can't put my finger on it but the seasoning was nasty. Will be a long time before we go back if we do. read more

My family and I went to the Chimes on a busy Friday night. We had to wait for about an hour, but they have a nice outside deck with plenty of seating. They also allow you to get drinks at the bar while you're waiting. We talked and walked along the outside trail while we waited, and the time went by quickly. Once we were seated, the waitress came to us right away to get our drink and appetizer orders. After bringing our drinks, we were ready to order our meals. I got the spinach and artichoke dip as an appetizer, and it was delicious. I didn't realize it would come with fried bow tie pasta instead of chips, but I was pleasantly surprised. The bow tie pasta was good even without the dip. For my meal I ordered the seafood pasta, and it was amazing! I was debating which meal to get before choosing the seafood pasta, and I'm happy that I did. The pasta had a great flavor, and it was very creamy. It was a hardy portion with enough for two meals (especially after eating the appetizer). I'd definitely like to go back to try a few more of their menu items if I didn't live so far away. read more

I do want to give them some props for their Crab & Corn Bisque - phenomenal! Also, the outdoor area is a nice place to wait if you have to - they've got goats and all kinds of wildlife. Tried The Chimes on the recommendation of a neighbor. We'd noticed it before and wondered what it was, because of it's lovely location. It sits far back from the highway, nestled among mature trees and lots of other greenery, near the river's edge. Though this would be the perfect spot for a small, romantic restaurant, The Chimes is more a large sports bar/beer garden with TV's in every corner. It's patrons come to drink, have a good time, and watch the games together. The atmosphere is loud, friendly and gregarious. As soon as we entered, it felt as if something wasn't right. We came face to face with three young, smiling women, all holding menus, who stared at us for quite a long time, but said...nothing. We eventually realized we had to ask to be seated. We ordered several things to sample. Nothing was bad or inedible--it was all decent, just not stellar. It all seemed to be pretty simple and seasoned with Tony's or some other cajun spice blend. Everything tasted the same. For a nice restaurant, the food really missed the mark. However, The Chimes is not that and not trying to be that. It's all about the drinking. It's a bar that sells food. And for bar/game day food, it was pretty good! Now that I know more about this place--that it's the second location of a beloved hang out near LSU's campus, where students loved to hang with friends, watch games, drink and party--it all makes perfect sense. Neither of us went to LSU, but this might be the perfect place to meet up with friends to watch Saints games. read more

I am excited to write this because this is my first 5 star in what feels like a very long time!!! I started with a pink lemonade. good. I then received gumbo soup. YUM. I did not like how it had 2 big shells in it and it was a tad spicy... the shells were probably for the soup base but anyway, the seafood and the soup was very good! My main dish was the charred oysters. My two coworkers received their main dishes maybe 10 minutes + before I received my dish. One of my coworkers had completely cleaned off his plate before I even got mine. I did not like how they brought our dishes out at such separate times! However, my oysters were magnificent so I will not let that ruin my review! They were covered in parmesan and came with delicious garlic bread. It was just soo good... the 6 piece order was not filling at all but just soooo good! ^_^ The second time I came here I got an oyster po'boy with sweet potato fries. It was pretty good!
