As the name suggests, this is a French-run establishment (Jayne & Martyn Emsen) and don't your taste buds know it! Judi & I were staying some 20 miles away near Shrewsbury (The Riverside Inn, Cound) and were reading Shropshire Life in the bar. In a back issue we came across a report on the Jolly Frog that sounded encouraging so we decided to give it a try. A GOOD DECISION!. They specialise in seafood and I can honestly say that I have never eaten better seafood even at the coast. These guys know what they're doing!

Inside French posters and signs adorn the walls of the multi-levelled restaurant, which gave the restaurant a relaxed comfortable atmosphere. I particularly liked the sign that said 'Lobsters love Guinness', you learn something new every day! The menu itself is quite comprehensive, but the Jolly Frog has a great reputation for its fish and seafood, so we both chose a fish dish. Other dishes included pizzas, steaks, roasts etc. We were just in time (2 minutes to spare!) for the prix menu, a choice of two or three courses for a set price, from a fairly wide selection. I went for the seared halibut steak, with samphire and a subtly flavoured white wine sauce; the best piece of halibut I've had since I was in Alaska, high praise indeed! My wife had the grey mullet with samphire in a lemon sauce, again a great dish, just a little heavy on the lemon. We also had a couple a sides that complimented both dishes perfectly, double fried chips and a dressed salad. The choice of desserts on the prix menu was limited to only two, a plum tart and fresh strawberries, meringue and cream, the latter being the dish we both went for. Served in a precipitous cocktail glass, it was the perfect dessert, flavourful and not too large. Rounded off with a decent cup of coffee, this was a great choice of restaurant for our last night in Ludlow.

A friend and I ate here Wednesday 1st June 2016 it's a small ish restaurant with around 10 tables for 2/4 on the ground floor, but a surprisingly larger room upstairs where functions such as tribute band nights a private do's are held I was impressed with the food quality. I had scallops raped in proceto, and my colleague had the veg soup. Both were tasty and well cooked the fish was tender and flavoursome the ham was crisp and and balanced well with the scallops, four scallops and a salad dressing My main course was Duck cooked pink with shaved root veg again flavesome and well balanced. When you first walk into this place you think, this is a bit small to be good, but eat your food then judge I was pleased with my food and so was my colleague. I will return and are going to try the tribute night

My favorite restaurant in Cheltenham! We arrived here by the suggestion of a cab driver and he…read moredescribed it as "very French cooking, without the fussiness". Which translates into delicious accessible French food. I ended up eating here twice in my 10 day trip. For starters, the staff was really hospitable, offering to take my coat and they were always attentive to the little things, like having enough water. They also were very patient in decoding the menu because there was a lot of French. The interior is cozy since it is downstairs, sporting low ceilings, warm brick walls, and a fireplace. I had a lot of food here, but these were my faves: - Baguette (comes with the meal) - so fresh and perfect! Crispy, crackly crust with soft fluffy innards. I could be happy with just their bread and butter for a meal. A sign of more good food to come - Terrine maison (liver pate) - Only order this if you like pate or don't mind the taste of liver. Served with crispy toasts, a lightly dressed salad, and onion jam. Liver pate + onion jam is a delightful food combo. - Scallops & pancetta salad - delicious. Rocket arugula, lightly dressed with really flavorful tomatoes and the right balance of pancetta. The scallops were tender and flavorful too - Crepe aux champignons (mushroom crepe) - Really rich and filling. This could be a light meal on its own. The gravy made it really filling. - Citron tart (Lemon tart) - absolutely winning and beautiful. Tart and bright lemon custard over a shortbread tart shell, very delicately covered by a thin brulee top. Served with a scoop of the sweetest and juiciest raspberries and a mound of fresh cream. It was so good that my dining partner wasn't going to have dessert until he saw it. And then he couldn't resist getting a slice of his own. - Chocolate fondant cake - well executed chocolate lava cake. Definitely a must for chocolate lovers. Only thing I didn't really like was the sea bass (fish of the day). A little too fussy with a whole fillet of bones to deal with. Great for dates or celebrations... or with the waitstaff being so French it could also be fun to come to practice French

Chester is a charming and fun city, with the old Roman walls that you can walk on top and around the city and the river side. It's a great ploy to get people in on a Tuesday but it's really opening yourself to a massive piss up mid-week given that it's one bottle per person! Food was good. The best thing we had was the pork belly starter which was supposed to come with boudin blank but came with black pudding instead. Both were rich and the rhubarb was a great contrast. The lamb main was fine but wasn't flavoursome enough. The veggie sides were great through. Green beans, carrots, gratin dauphinois and steamed potatoes. I know this sounds weird but I would have been happy just eating the veg as my main meal. The carrots were so sweet and the potatoes perfectly done. Dessert was croissant and butter pudding. The Tuesday meal deal wine is not great. It's cheap plonk which gets you buzzed but it's not great with the meal. I would actually suggest ordering a bottle of proper wine and then start on the cheap stuff. You can apparen,to bring the leftover bottle home!! The restaurant has great decor ambiance and is lively. However, if you are looking for a quiet dinner, this is probably not the spot as it gets very loud!
