Chester is a charming and fun city, with the old Roman walls that you can walk on top and around the city and the river side. There's also the Chester Races (The Roodee) that depending on the season, brings a lot of nicely-dressed and sometimes hard drinking folks to town. Anthony advises that the May Gold Cup is a good time to attend. Chez Jules is a nice French restaurant on Northgate Street and is worth your strong consideration.

It's a great ploy to get people in on a Tuesday but it's really opening yourself to a massive piss up mid-week given that it's one bottle per person! Food was good. The best thing we had was the pork belly starter which was supposed to come with boudin blank but came with black pudding instead. Both were rich and the rhubarb was a great contrast. The lamb main was fine but wasn't flavoursome enough. The veggie sides were great through. Green beans, carrots, gratin dauphinois and steamed potatoes. I know this sounds weird but I would have been happy just eating the veg as my main meal. The carrots were so sweet and the potatoes perfectly done. Dessert was croissant and butter pudding. The Tuesday meal deal wine is not great. It's cheap plonk which gets you buzzed but it's not great with the meal. I would actually suggest ordering a bottle of proper wine and then start on the cheap stuff. You can apparen,to bring the leftover bottle home!! The restaurant has great decor ambiance and is lively. However, if you are looking for a quiet dinner, this is probably not the spot as it gets very loud!

For me (with hearing issues) there is not enough soft furnishings to soak up some of the sound, so in the end I removed my hearing aids. There wasn't any loud misic it was just general restaurant chatter. Before I booked I checked out the menu, and is very much in the style of Bistrot Pierre. Bistrot Pierre was founded in 1994, and the COTE series of restaurants was founded in 2007. However, the latter have more sites. They automatically add 12.5% to the bill. I'm happy to pay this if confirmed by the staff that they actually do get the money. Nevertheless, I'd prefer to decide upon my contribution. Before I start about the choices, it was an interesting observation subsequently checking the bill to see that my 11 yo chose the most expensive items that appeared on the bill. Also, is it waiter for all genders these days? Has this hit the languages that have masculine and feminine for objects, and people? I'm going to distinguish between the two by Male Waiter (MW) and Female Waiter (FW). Starters: 2 x Calamari (£6.50 ea) - £13.00 2 x Crab Mayonnaise (£7.75 ea) - £15.00 1 x Prawn - £15.00 Mains: 3 x 7oz Fillet Steaks (£19.95 ea) - £59.85 (2 with garlic butter at £1.25 each - £2.50) 1 x half chicken, garlic butter (extra) £11.50 + £1.25 - £12.75 1 x Steak Frites - £11.50 Sweets: 1 x Creme Brulee - £5.95 1 x Tart Aux Citron - £5.75 1 x Iced Berries - £4.95 1 x Praline Crepe - £6.25 Drinks 3 x Coca Cola - (£2.60 ea) - £7.80 4 x Bottles of Kronenburg (£3.80) - £15.20 1 Cranberry Juice - £2.30 3 x 125ml Lagarde Blanc (£4.25 ez) - £14.25 (cheaper to have had the bottle, will she never learn?) 2 x 125ml Lagarde Rouge (£4.75) - £9.50 1 x Cafe American - £2.30 Service Charge - £24.58 TOTAL - £221.18 Now for the loss of the star: Fillet steaks ordered as follows: Me - Blue Daughter - Rare Son - Medium Unfortunately, it was discovered a bit too late as that garlic butter had been applied and I didn't want garlic butter. We got: Me - Medium Daughter - Blue Son - Rare They were delivered from the kitchen by two MWs. The FW offered me a free drink (I declined), as they couldn't un-cook my steak. We all enjoyed the steaks, but they are supposed to be locally reared and aged 30 days. I have had better aged steaks that don't ooze blood..... However, they were tender. There was also errors on a nearby table: First they brought out one plate of Steak Frites, when two was order, and they thought the old ladies wanted to share.... Not so.... They were told the additional one would take 7 minutes. Quite rightly they asked for the one available to be taken back and both brought to the table at the same time. When their bill arrived, it had 3 steak frites, instead of 2..... I am not quite sure why these mistakes happen: our steaks, and the ladies' steak frites.... Would I return to Cote Brasserie - YES.

We found this city centre creperie by accident, not design, in the hunt for a good savoury lunch…read more The menu looked perfect and all three of us agreed instantly to go in. It's been a heck of a long time since we were last in Chester. In fact, there was no such place as Starbucks or Costa and a Frappuccino wasn't even in the language it's that far back. Starbucks, a second wave coffee provider, was only venturing into Canada when we were last there. Creperies too were places you'd find only in Brittany and Normandy. The great British public would have eschewed, nay nay, pooh - poohed the very thought way back when. But all change; doncha just love it that the only constant is change? Having enjoyed many a good savoury and sweet crepe - doesn't everybody enjoy a good crepe? - in Brittany and Normandy with calvados and crisp, light, sweet cidré we knew done right it would be tasty. So I had the crisp bacon & maple syrup crepe (just over £5) and being moi (well we must nod to the French) I had only one question. Is it maple syrup or that artificial flavoured sugar rubbish pretending to be maple syrup. The reply was instant and welcome: the real Mc Coy. Great. I did have a moment of weakness mind as there was a goat cheese choice but I stuck with bacon. My companions chose an all day breakfast crepe and a Mexican chicken crepe respectively (just over £7 each). We all had cappuccinos (large at under £3 each) and Welsh sparkling water (£1.8), none of yer Perrier or Badoit here, just right too. The service was darn good. The food was tasty, light and perfect - ooh la la - as our French cousins might say. The coffee was alright and more third wave but I'd prefer a much more punchy coffee, but disappointment aside I'll leave it five star for the great service and tasty food. It might even take us back to Chester one day, but I did notice a divine looking (and smelling) Yorkshire pudding sandwich shop, so it might be there next time - now you certainly won't find one of those in Normandy or Brittany, vive la difference.
