The French Pantry

Right in the centre of Ludlow, on Tower Street, is the French Pantry, a small and very popular…read moreFrench bistro type restaurant. Its a good idea to book, as we must have heard at least 30 people either on the phone or as walk-ins being turned away, because the restaurant was full. The evening menu was a set price for either 2 or 3 courses, we went for the two courses (£20), and judging by the portion sizes we were served, neither of us could have hoped to manage three courses, to say the portions were generous was an understatement! Plumping for the main/dessert option, we picked from a fairly comprehensive choice that included confit of duck, rabbit cassoulet etc. My wife went for the Coq au vin, a generous bowl of perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken, with accompanying crisp garlic potatoes, a stunning main course. I went for the seafood and chorizo paella, with a haddock fillet, again enough for food for two people, with generous portions of squid and prawns. After such quality food, we both could have easily stopped there, but the nature of the deal, means you have paid for two courses. Again a good choice of desserts, between us we had the chocolate brownie with caramel sauce and the Alsace plum tart, again two wonderful dishes. I couldn't really fault the French Pantry, a good atmosphere, great food, generous portions, helpful, unobtrusive service, and an extensive range of wine and beer; what's not to like?

'Pantry' is a good name for this shop, it definitely has the feel of a manor house's larder, which…read moreshelves stacked high with jars and packets. French cuisine dominates but there's also selections of pasta so it's not too narrow-minded. The service is friendly- regular customers seem to get very chatty treatment, though the staff are also accustomed to window-shopping tourists who might need a little persuading. The prices are a bit on the high side, though I may just think that as a non-Ludlow-native- you may well think the prices are Normal-For-Ludlow. The back room is entirely given over to Harlington Wine - http://www.harlingtonwine.com - who stock a wide variety of different European wines. You might catch one of Harlington Wine's representatives depending on when you're there, if you do then you'll be talking to a wine expert.

It's about a 15 minute drive from Chippenham itself. It is extremely popular with locals and tourists. There isn't a restaurant like it anywhere else unless you go out into Bath or Bristol? The cuisine is French, and is extremely good. I've eaten in a lot of nice restaurants in my time and this one is on my favourites list. It is here that I had one of the nicest racks of lamb I have ever eaten. Succulent and juicy it was cooked to perfection and not a scrap of meat was left on the bones. Their signature dish are their dauphinois potatoes. Again these are the nicest I have ever tasted. I have tried several times to replicate them myself bit can never do it. They are out of this world! Creamy and garlicky they are out of this world. The whole meal was just stunning. Completely out of this world I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. The restaurant itself is nothing too special, a very simple dining room that seats all diners comfortably without being on top of each other. It could do with better lighting and a bit more of a vibrant atmosphere. The staff are very attentive and you don't have to wait long for drinks or food. This is quite an expensive restaurant so it would be for most people a once a year treat unless of course you have pots of money and you can afford to eat there all the time? I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a venue for a very special occasion. They cater well for large groups and celebratory dinners. The food as I have said is fantastic so you won't be disappointed on that front. I shall definitely be making another reservation again in the future.

Very good food for a good price. Pleasant service and a lovely atmosphere. Relaxed and unrushed.read more

The owner and staff are so welcoming and always to hand with top ups of water, bread anything else that is needed both friendly but unobtrusive. The food varies from high end duck, veal, steak to filling peasant french dishes including amazing slow cooked belly of port and a huge cassoulet. Starters include frog legs and snails for the adventurous as well as delicious salads etc, I even tried a snail as you can order one on its own, I was pleasantly surprised by the garlicky potato surrounded snail and have since had a full portion. However room is essential for the desserts, they are amazing, I will post a photo of 'le chocolat', the egg shell contains a chocolate fondant then creme anglais and cream plus a mini delicious chocolate tart, white chocolate mousse and chocolate sorbet. Le vanille is a variation of mini vanilla desserts and so on, have a look at their website for more details. Delicious food and comfortable surroundings with great staff gets my top marks

My favorite restaurant in Cheltenham! We arrived here by the suggestion of a cab driver and he…read moredescribed it as "very French cooking, without the fussiness". Which translates into delicious accessible French food. I ended up eating here twice in my 10 day trip. For starters, the staff was really hospitable, offering to take my coat and they were always attentive to the little things, like having enough water. They also were very patient in decoding the menu because there was a lot of French. The interior is cozy since it is downstairs, sporting low ceilings, warm brick walls, and a fireplace. I had a lot of food here, but these were my faves: - Baguette (comes with the meal) - so fresh and perfect! Crispy, crackly crust with soft fluffy innards. I could be happy with just their bread and butter for a meal. A sign of more good food to come - Terrine maison (liver pate) - Only order this if you like pate or don't mind the taste of liver. Served with crispy toasts, a lightly dressed salad, and onion jam. Liver pate + onion jam is a delightful food combo. - Scallops & pancetta salad - delicious. Rocket arugula, lightly dressed with really flavorful tomatoes and the right balance of pancetta. The scallops were tender and flavorful too - Crepe aux champignons (mushroom crepe) - Really rich and filling. This could be a light meal on its own. The gravy made it really filling. - Citron tart (Lemon tart) - absolutely winning and beautiful. Tart and bright lemon custard over a shortbread tart shell, very delicately covered by a thin brulee top. Served with a scoop of the sweetest and juiciest raspberries and a mound of fresh cream. It was so good that my dining partner wasn't going to have dessert until he saw it. And then he couldn't resist getting a slice of his own. - Chocolate fondant cake - well executed chocolate lava cake. Definitely a must for chocolate lovers. Only thing I didn't really like was the sea bass (fish of the day). A little too fussy with a whole fillet of bones to deal with. Great for dates or celebrations... or with the waitstaff being so French it could also be fun to come to practice French
