We walked or stumbled into this cute little " Cellar" of a restaurant... they had live music a cute girl singing not too loud which was very nice... we decided that we would sit at the bar because it was so dark in this restaurant you couldn't even see the tables.... " normally I like a nice dark wine bar because I think it makes me look amazing ...however! " We couldn't even see the menu we used our flashlights from our phone even at the bar... The wines are very nice . we were full from our dinner, however, the bartender suggested we try their truffle popcorn with Parmesan, as a snack. It was so delicious and it went well with the wine selection that we chose. One of them was actually a wine on draft. read more

As always, food was great, music was top notch, and an inviting ambience. Always a great place to see talented local musicians. Be sure to check with the staff what time they close because it may differ from the website hours. We had lights up and chairs stacked at 10:30 when all things we could find said 11:00 closing time. When we asked if it was still an 11:00 closing time after checking the website, they said "no, it's 10". Reached out on social media with no response. The Cellar was a favorite spot of mine for years and I made the 45 min drive from RSM just to go here. The food is still good, drinks are still good, the atmosphere is still good. A few things have changed... Back in 2020 they were finally starting to take reservations, which is hugely needed in a place so small thats gets so busy, so when you are driving over from 45 min away you can actually make sure there will be a table open when you get there. Yesterday when I called and said I wanted to make a reservation for my b-day party (for today) at 3pm, I was told they dont take reservations. But ... they also declined to tell me something very important... that they dont serve any food at this time! The website doesnt warn you of this either!! So imagine my surprise when my friends and I arrive at 3 today all set to have lunch for my birthday and are told that we cant order our food till 4!! The server claimed that the website tells you this but I pulled it up and showed him, it just says open 10 to 10 on Saturday, happy hour 4-6. (See photo!) We had to sit there for an hour waiting to order. It was very disappointing. Another thing I loved about this place in the past was the staff knew their cheeses! They could even recommend cheeses for you if you told them what you liked. Today we ordered 2 cheese plates (and other things) and when the girl set down the plate I asked her, is that rosemary on the cheese? Her reply was "I dont know what it is. We dont serve that one a lot". Why are you serving me something if you dont even know what it is?! A knowledge of the food is no longer required for a person to work here, which is also disappointing. We spent over $100, which is easy to do here, but I just was disappointed and wont be in a hurry to return. Even though I still stand by the food and drinks always being good, there is room for improvement here. If you are open, and you are a restaurant, you should be serving food! Saying you dont serve food in the middle of the day while you are open is simply unacceptable. read more

We had a two person business lunch here after Nick's was too busy to take our reservation early. My brother lives locally and this place was on his recommendation list. It was a Friday holiday, and it seemed like whoever did the scheduling might have forgotten about the holiday... they were definitely short staffed. We sat right away on the patio outside, and waited 10-15 minutes to order drinks. Our server returned and had forgotten about our drinks unfortunately. He was very nice, but noticeably frazzled. Ultimately, We both had salads. They took some time - close to 25 min, but they both had grilled chicken so they're busy, it's a little bit of a wait. My chicken arrived not cooked all the way through the other person dining did have their chicken cooked. Instead of taking the whole salad back, they asked me to load my chicken onto a separate plate to be cooked more. I didn't love that, take the whole meal away and amend it as needed and bring it back (I think he was thinking then I would at least have something to eat while the chicken was cooking). Ten min later, my chicken returned and I ate my salad without incident. It was tasty and quite healthy. We also ordered these house fries they have - phenomenal. And they came with a dill ranch that was divine. We both had iced tea as well and I like the size of the mason jars they served them in and their crushed ice. The server did his best and the service got better as the meal went on and the restaurant found its flow. I was a server for a very long time so I'm sympathetic to being 'in the weeds', but ultimately none of this was the servers fault, this was a staffing issue. Five star food, three star experience. We didn't consume any alcohol so I cannot comment on their selection. read more

Oh man. It doesn't really get much worse of an experience than this. And I was a server and a bartender for years so my leniency towards service workers is usually VERY generous. We get there, the table only has two seats, so a server brings us two more, great! Seems nice. We're sitting outside. We sit down, 10 minutes go by, I go inside and ask if we order inside, he goes "oh you guys are sitting down? I'll be right there" like dude you literally brought us the chairs for us to sit down but okay. Another 10 minutes go by, dude brings us waters. I kid you not EVERY glass has huge freaking lipstick stains on them. EVERY ONE! Impressive. Another 15 minutes go by, the waiter finally returns to take our order, but only because I go "wait! I think we're all ready to go." Another 15 minutes go by, I get the single glass of wine I ordered. We've now been here for almost an hour, and I'm just getting the one drink I've ordered. Another 25 minutes and we finally get our food! Yay! We're missing the starter we ordered but I guess it's more of an ender now. Food is SO cold. Especially the eggs. Like, did they get this off of some other table? How did they achieve absolute zero? 5 more minutes and our starter comes. It was just fries by the way. An hour to get some fries. Around this time the table next to us of 8 is frantically flagging down the server for the check, he looks directly at them, sits down next to this girl and takes her order, and turns around and goes inside. The whole table looks at me with exasperation, and I'm like "dude, same." Servers the whole time were super nonchalant and awkward by the way. Would've absolutely believed they were some random guys subbing in for the real servers. I DID see one server come and serve some ladies next to us who seemed like she actually knew what she was talking about, and I pointed her out to my friends like OH LOOK! They DO have real servers here! Needless to say, they should have paid US to eat here, and honestly I'm not sure if the $120 that we paid would be worth it for me to be so miserable for an hour and a half. I would have paid money just to go anywhere else. Few times in my life have I so badly wanted a refund. Highly highly highly recommend NOT coming to this location EVER. When they first rolled out the mushroom banh mi I was so excited, it was phenomenal and I came back to order it again and to my shock, found an insect on my plate, I was horrified. I pointed this out to the staff and the owner just shrugged it off as if I was imagining the 8 legged roach in my meal,...I don't know what happened but they need to get it together. After a long day of driving back and forth in San Diego, I wanted to treat my friend out for a wine and cheese before we head over to Brussels Bistro. I had this place save in my bookmarks for months, never really had the time until now and since it's on the busy Main Street, would recommend to get an uber or Lyft, because that's what we did and plus to be a responsible citizen. (Please don't drink and drive, get a a Lyft, uber or have a DD driver.) Everything was great, services was amazing but we got here on a Saturday afternoon, it was pretty busy and a lot of cheese boards were flying out. We waited a bit more than 30 minutes and my friend and I, were joking saying that our server might forgot to punch it in the POS( since we used to work in a restaurant before, I understand that happens) but our server didn't he mention that the BOH was backed up on cheese boards order, on which we saw how many boards they were doing. That Spanish cheese board is really good, the fig cakes are my favorite and the varies of olives, would definitely come back and maybe on a Sunday. Good wine + good food + great service = solid 5 stars! Met up with my friend on a Friday afternoon (since it's halfway between Irvine and Carlsbad) and enjoyed their outdoor seating with cute twinkle lights and their happy hour until 6pm. We sampled a nice variety of vino, and all delicious - Prosecco, Sancerre and a red flight (Sangiovese, Paso Cab, Bordeaux). We ordered exclusively off the happy hour menu for the food, and I was impressed by the consistent quality of the ingredients and execution across all the dishes (I.e. perfect light airy crisp fry on the fries, sweet potato tater tots and fried chicken slider; Caesar salad had super fresh crunchy leaves of romaine - not a hint of any wilted leaves or that brown discoloration from pre-chopped leaves left out that one sometimes encounters). We also got the 3 cheese plate which each were paired with the perfect accoutrements- an unfiltered honey with a gooey rich Brie and marcona almonds; an herb crusted pecorino? With bright tart sun dried tomato; and another pecorino-like cheese with apricot. The service was awesome- very friendly, kind and warm - At the end of our yummy meal, we were given a complimentary chocolate chip cookie. I'd like to pause here as this was seriously one of the best cookies I've had - crisp outer "shell" gives way to a decadent warm gooey center, with Maldivian (spelling?) salt sprinkled on top that cut through the sweetness and basically made a happy cookie flavor symphony on the tongue! I'm not in the part of town often but met friend here for a bite to eat and drink this weekend. San Clemente was absolutely beautiful. The downtown area was quaint, fun, and well maintained. I had no issues finding street parking that day. There's indoor and outdoor seating. You seat yourself and someone comes out to take your order. The ambiance is totally laid back but there's still a sophistication about this place that I really liked. It took a while for our two glasses of wine to arrive. It was a decent pour but nothing generous for the price tag. I felt the server rushed us to order even though we just wanted to take our time to enjoy our wine. So we ordered an appetizer then felt rushed to order an entree. We tried: AVOCADO TOAST : - freakin' amazing. And I don't even eat carbs. It's one single toast but it was a delicious piece of thick, nicely grilled, toast. The fork mashed avocado was fresh and tasted divine. It's not a filling appetizer especially if you share it. TWO EGG BREAKFAST: - making scrambled eggs is a sure way to tell if a restaurant knows it's stuff (that's what Top Chef always say to their contestants). The Cellar would win that episode as the scrambled eggs here was ridiculously good. It was light, fluffy, a tiny bit soft, and completely not over cooked. I think it had a bit of chives in there too. Truly, one of the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. The side of bacon were crisp and delicious. The grilled toast was the same bread as the avocado mash we had for an appetizer but the bread was still great. Side of potatoes were generous. I'd absolutely come back to try more dishes.
