Truffle fries
Sherwyn H.

I was only here for drinks. Our curiosity lead us to walk down the stairs to see what's inside. We were at the cafe in the plaza and something drew us to this place lol . Good thing we did cause we found a gem. Cozy bar and restaurant is what we found. Ordered some drinks and checked out the menu , we're coming back here for sure. While having drinks we looked through the menu so we know what to expect next time we come . They do make a good vesper tho. We snacked on some truffle fries and they were good, good sign , too bad we ate already, but for drinks definitely a place to come for. Till then, I'll see you soon for a more in depth review .

I havent been here in 20 years so when we went for a congratulatory dinner i was excited. Lisa (?) was SO nice and took excellent care of us, esp since we were a bit party. Its an intimate, romantic place with low lighting and old fashioned decor. I got the pom lemonade - it was tart and refreshing - but my friend let me try her School's Out mocktail and it was INCREDIBLE! I got the lobster bisque - the tableside presentation was an elegant touch and it was creamy and rich - and the flank steak for dinner. One of the top 2 steaks ive ever had. Cooked to perfection. Bread was also tasty! Got the petite choco souffle with the grand marnier anglais. Also perfectly fluffy but my friend got it with the choco sauce and i have to say that one was better. I couldve eaten a bowl of both sauces on their own though. It seemed lively at the bar esp for a thursday, so i know this place is a populat hangout. Definitely go for a special occasion, you wont regret it! I hope to go again soon!

Morsels of oysters :/

I went recently to enjoy the happy hour oyster special, and was a bit surprised at what I found. The oysters were cut half?! I'd never seen anything like it. I saw the special being advertised online and read a comment saying that the oysters were halved, and when I responded asking, "really"? Both our comments appeared to have been deleted. It was disappointing because while the deal was great, I didn't get to enjoy the full oyster experience. The brine was lost from most of the them which takes away from the taste and it was a bit odd. Service was wonderful! Just wish they were a bit more upfront with how they operate and market themselves.

Love this place, especially the bar area. The bar has a different menu than the restaurants and we love it. The steak sandwich is one of the favorites. It's always busy. Make sure to make reservations if you want to dine in at the restaurant, the bar is first come, first serve. Lily was great. Love the speakeasy style place.

Tenderloin

First, it took us forever to find. It's in the backend of a plaza, same one as Somi Somi. You'll hopefully see signs pointing towards a set of dark stairs that take you down to THE CELLAR. You pull the giant door and enter a vibe. It's definitely ready for Halloween, a bit dim, old fashioned, lives up to the centuries old feel. We split some soups. Both the lobster bisque and French onion soups were solid. Lobster bisque was super creamy, delicious. French onion was surprisingly mild, not heavy on the salt, very nice. I got the tenderloin, which was fine. But the winner was the salmon, very well-cooked with a super crisp skin. Service was attentive. They accept reservations, but do have a cancellation policy with associated fee for last minute cancellations. Gratuity included for groups of 6+

We went here for Valentine's Day! We were seated in a booth. I love the booths. The booths were across this beautiful wall of wine. I love the red and black decor here. He had the steak and I had fish. Both were great! Our appetizer was the bone marrow with jam! Super good! We had the chocolate soufflé for dessert! Of course that was delicious! The drinks were great too. This is a late post so I forgot what the drinks were called. Service was excellent! We love this restaurant. Came back a second time in April. We will be back many more times!

Came here for an anniversary celebration. Loved the decor and the service. We have had French foods from various places but the dishes here really surprised us in a good way!

This restaurant is a vibe. Unique ambiance, dim and dungeony feel but not in a scary way. They have a vast drink menu with one drink priced at $150. Appetizers never disappoint. Beef carpaccio has a unique taste not for every palate but if you love capers try it. Steak was like butter and melted in your mouth. Chefs special Rigatoni was creamy and savory. Salmon was crunchy on top but not overcooked and perfectly flavored. Lobster bisque was heavenly. Savory, creamy and served table side. Servers were young but knowledgeable and professional. It's a place you want to keep experiencing. A dinner of 4 with drinks and dessert came out to almost $600.

Atmosphere is always 10/10 however the food was disappointing. My tomato bisque soup was very thing, no salt, and cold. My eggs were cold for my entree and it feels like the staff is rushing you out.

Crème Brûlée

Ambiance was good, they had many signs leading to where the restaurant entrance is. We loved the escargot, it was a different flavor and serving style than what we're used to. The lobster bisque was good but we thought it could be 30% less salty and it would be perfect. The filet mignon was tender and cooked well tho I'm not too sure about the outside char flavoring, was too burnt for my taste. Our server Shelton was excellent and made the night special as we were celebrating our anniversary.

STAR -- Extremely Poor Service and Very Disrespectful Treatment I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so disappointing that I feel other customers should know what happened. I live in Fullerton and chose this restaurant because of the good reviews. We even made a reservation in advance and arrived at 6:00 PM. However, it was already 6:45 PM and our server still had not taken our order. We were sitting there waiting for 45 minutes just to place an order. From the beginning, we had to constantly ask for basic service. No water, no bread -- unless we specifically asked. Even after asking, things were brought to us very slowly. If we needed more water, we had to look for the server ourselves because nobody was checking on our table. The food was also extremely salty. When we decided we were ready to leave, we couldn't even find our server to pay the bill. My friend eventually saw her near the restroom and tried to call her. Instead of stopping or responding, she continued walking and went into the kitchen. My friend lightly pushed the kitchen door to get her attention because she had already called her and the server did not respond. The server immediately became upset and said, "Don't push this door." My friend explained that she only pushed the door because she was trying to get her attention after calling her several times. Then came the most unbelievable part. The server told my friend that she would call the manager and that we should NOT come back to this restaurant. Excuse me? After waiting 45 minutes just to order, repeatedly asking for water and bread, having to search for our server, and receiving very poor service, we were then told that we shouldn't come back? Honestly, I don't need to return to a restaurant that treats customers this way. But telling a customer "don't come back" because they tried to get a server's attention is extremely disrespectful and unprofessional. There were also mosquitoes inside the restaurant, which made the experience even worse. We were seated in a very isolated corner of the restaurant. I am Asian, and the overall treatment made me uncomfortable enough to wonder whether we were being treated differently because of our ethnicity. I cannot know for certain whether that was the reason, but I believe the management should take this concern seriously. I came here expecting good food and professional service because of the positive reviews. Instead, I spent most of the evening waiting, looking for our server, and asking for basic necessities. I would like the manager to contact me directly regarding this experience. This was not simply "slow service." It was a complete lack of attention, followed by disrespectful treatment toward a paying customer.

Bone marrow with chimichurri and cocktails to start
Sarah C.

Amazing food and unique cocktails. Romantic intimate dining. The filet is delicious along with the Brussels and bone marrow. The Brussels are caramelized with bacon and cooked to perfection. Butter cake is a great dessert option as well as their cheesecake. Highly recommended The Cellar for special occasions or date night.

Ceaser Salad with Salmon

Loved this restaurant! It was really cute and does really resemble pirates of the Caribbean, the food was really good, I orders Ceaser salad with salmon and my bf got the salmon entree, we also got the chocolate souffle, and we are definitely coming back!

The Cellar Restaurant Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Cellar Restaurant

Is there a dress code?

Not Really. Casual is fine.

Is there a kids menu?

No there is not. It's a fine dining restaurant, but kids are allowed.

Are there gluten free options a available?

To my knowledge I didn't see "gluten free" pasta.. but I know they have meats and seafood that are gluten free! Definitely options.

Is there beer menu? If so what types of beers are available?

Yes, there is a beer menu. There are international options; I had a Belgian beer when I was there.

With Valentines tomorrow, do you have some walk in availability or reservations only? Thanks (another potential last min walk in guests)?

Are they handicapped accessible?

When we dined there the other evening, they seemed to usher a fella in a wheelchair through the kitchen. So it can be done.

Do they have zabiha halal meals?

Is there a dress code?

No dress code. People will be causal in jeans n shirts and also dressed up. Dealers choice.

Are babies or kids allowed?

Hi, I did see an infant with a couple, however I didn't see any other kids. Not sure if that helps

Where do you park?

Behind the building, even in parking structure. It looks like parking for the apartments but there is public parking in the building.

For Valentine's Day will you have a pre fixe menu per person?

They do have pre fix for Valentine's

Saw corkage fee 2019 @$35 (max 2-bottles), is this still same? Also can champagne be one of the bottles? Thank you?

Yes, the corkage fee is $35 per bottle (including sparkling wine). If you purchase a bottle from The Cellar, they will waive your corkage fee.

Will there be zombie theme for Halloween time again? Ive been wanting to go since 5yrs ago and I finally went last night, the cocktails, food and dessert were so good.

Is the wine list available online?

It changes a lot so it's not online, but if you call they will send it to you.

On yelp it says "Monday there is no table service, there is full bar and small plates". Does this mean there is a reduced menu on Mondays?

This is actually incorrect. They are full service on Mondays.

Is there inside seating available?

Yes. They are seating at the required 25% occupancy.

What do they offer for Happy Hour?

Yes! A great happy hour from 5-6pm

Are reservations required for dinner and what are the prices?

On the weekends, yes I would make reservations. You can do it via OpenTable. Usually $30-$50 per person. I have been going there for more than a decade. It's an amazing place

Is this restaurant more quiet & intimate? Not loud like Mastros Steakhouse? I been trying to look for a intimate/QUIET restaurant to have dinner at.

Yes, this place is quiet and intimate. We had a very nice wedding anniversary dinner for two there.

Grew up here but oddly I've never been to The Cellar. Looking for a place for my 60th birthday in a week. Do I need reservations for the bar? Hear cocktails are amazing. Can we order dessert too? Is there music?

No reservations needed for the bar and yes the cocktails are amazing! They do have delicious dessert but no live music as far as I have experienced. Happy Birthday!

We were there on Sunday, October 3rd around 3pm. We asked who the owners were because we were really impressed with the place and thought they might be the same owners as another location we had visited. There was absolutely no bad intention behind the question. The male bartender told us that no one name drops anymore. I understood what he was saying and was more than willing to move on. But then I asked him if the bar offered whiskey sours and he responded, "You really don't know what you're doing here and what you want." I was honestly so taken back by that comment. I don't normally stay quiet when someone speaks to me disrespectfully, but I was so caught off guard that I didn't even know what to say. Before that, he had also yelled out to the host that she didn't need to worry because we didn't know the owners and that she could relax. The whole interaction was completely unnecessary and made us feel very uncomfortable. We came in wanting to enjoy the atmosphere and have a good time. Instead, we left feeling disrespected and uncomfortable. There is a way to speak to customers, even if you feel they are asking questions you don't like. We did nothing to deserve that kind of attitude. The Blind Rabbit may be a great place, but unfortunately, the way we were treated by this bartender completely ruined the experience for us. Customer service matters, and unfortunately, ours was extremely disappointing.

The food was tasty as well; we ordered a variety of dishes ranging from a few appetizers, the tacos, pizza, sandwiches, and the steaks. We were happy with the dishes, especially as they were very fair in pricing. The pizza slice was an incredible deal for only $6 and it was a huge portion! The drinks, although creative, were a little underwhelming. Even though it listed several ingredients, none but maybe one would stand out and everything else was drowned out so they were all kind of one-note. We were looking forward to tasting the rum as it's a signature item from their distillery but we couldn't taste it at all in the cocktails, unfortunately, so we can't comment on it. Lastly, the biggest disappointment was the service. The servers were very nice but it was obvious they were understaffed. They had a large party in the next dining room and one party in the secluded dining room but the first floor was empty and, in the upstairs dining room we were in, we were one of three parties occupying the whole room. Sadly, we didn't get asked about ordering until a good 20-30 minutes after being seated. 30 minutes later our appetizers came out so we'd been sitting there an hour already. Later, one person in our party got their food first--his steak--but his accompanying side dishes didn't come out until another 20 minutes later when he was pretty much done with his steak. Furthermore, he had almost finished his steak and still no one else had received their food yet. It was kind of rough. The food trickled out slowly after his sides finally came out and then the last of our group got his sides first and then his steak came out 10 minutes after the sides. It was kind of frustrating but comical, in a way. We didn't really know what was going on in the kitchen and how prep was being prioritized for it to come out in such a non-intuitive order. In our eyes, it didn't seem that busy since our whole dining room had only three tables seated. That was about 30% of the room. Perhaps the larger parties in the other rooms were taking up a lot of the staff's time. We did see them going up and down the stairs often but we didn't see our servers much at all (but they were very nice!). On top of this, the water was served in plastic cups and the plates we were given for the appetizers were also plastic. It didn't really give off the "quality" vibe but if that keeps costs down, we can understand it. All in all, we're glad we went. It's potentially a great experience for a group of family and/or friends due to the ambience, food, and cost. But the bummer was how slow everything was and how the food was served (sporadically and few and far between) with it being a Saturday night and taking reservations. Having a few more cooks and serving staff would alleviate most of this but that's something the budget will have to determine. PS When you get any of the appetizers with the "toasted bread" for dipping, just prepare your jaw; they're brick-hard.

You can make a reservation on their website. My first cocktail was the Blood & Ink (Cynar 70, onion skin syrup, pomegranate, $18). It drinks on the bitter side with some light sweetness. She liked this a lot and ordered it as her second drink. Her first cocktail was the Sweet Intoxication (Lemon Hart 151, Fernet, falernum, cold brew, $20). This drink had some good complexity with bitterness and good coffee notes. It has a mole foam on top with a cinnamon sprinkle. You get a little of the foam with each sip which tones down the 151 and adds some additional flavor and texture. We were in the mood for some food, so we ordered a few items. Their food menu is more small bites than full entrees. If you are looking for a full meal, dine next door at Les Amis before your visit to Chapter 4. I had the Steak & Fries ($20). The steak was seasoned well, is pre-cut, and there were some onions and peppers in the mix. I would guess its three to four ounces of meat, and it comes with a good garlic sauce. The round-cut fries were good, and there were a lot of them. This was the perfect plate since I wasn't hungry enough for a full entree. She had the quesadilla with chicken ($17). It is made using pita bread, and is filled with chicken, cheese, and some veggies. It was good and filling. Next, I had the Black Garlic Old Fashioned (bourbon, black garlic demerara, bitters, smoked, $22). This has a great presentation as the drink arrives smoked in a tall glass container. First the smoke is poured into the glass, followed by the cocktail. It drinks very smooth with some light sweetness. The garnish is a roasted garlic clove. I ate it, and it was surprisingly sweet with only a light garlic flavor. We had one more round from the regular menu. I had the Prophet and Loss (pandan, coconut rum, velvet falernum, bright citrus, silky mango pineapple foam, $18). The grassy flavor from the pandan stands out with coconut underneath. The foam top is a little sweet, and I actually liked the drink better as more of the foam mixed in to the rest of the drink. Maybe I'd stir it a bit next time. She had the Pasilla & Banana (mezcal, pasilla syrup, banana liqueur, pineapple, lime, chocolate bitters, $18). It drinks mezcal forward, but not too much, with banana and a subtle heat underneath. Service was great, friendly and prompt. Even the owner, JC, was helping out with service on a busy Saturday night. We enjoyed the food and drinks. I really like the cocktail program here. They offer a wide selection of original cocktails, they actively add new drinks to the menu, and they use a great variety of spirits and ingredients you don't often see. We will be back soon!

For cocktail lovers, they are doing some really cool stuff there. Their signature list has many unique flavor combinations, and I'm looking forward to our next visit to try more! Food-wise: no misses for us. We debated going for a bunch of small plates (easily doable with their menu), but the sea bass was calling to us. Split that + the Wagyu Short Rib. Both were delicious, but the Wagyu was a little under salted for me. The smoked carrot conift actually stole the show on that dish - we're definitely going to try the carrot appetizer next time we're there! Dessert: Both full desserts looked great (their 3rd dessert right now is a cocktail - also cool!), but we opted for the Baked Alaska. DELICIOUS! The dish was stellar, but the cherry sauce with it took it to the next level. Ambiance: Great vibes. They have a live DJ Fridays and Saturdays, and the music was present but not overwhelming for me. Staff were very attentive and very polite. I appreciated the historical fun facts they shared. If you have the ability to go, take it all in!
