By all means go to Salem in person for a tarot reading BUT ... You don't have to physically go to Salem to have divination with a real Salem witch. And Nick Dickinson is one of the witchiest of witches. And available for readings at The Cauldron Black. I have gone to many different readers, and of course everyone has their different styles, but Nick is my "go to" for divination when I need to cut the crap and hear what the cards have to say. This person has a really impressive background and deep relationship with the tarot and is a talented, masterful reader. My divinations with Nick have been spectacular- on point, clear, WILDLY accurate. You truly do not need to say a lot or give tons of context for your question - he does not seem to want a lot of exposition- so maybe go in knowing what question you want to ask and just let him do his thing. You can book online at The Cauldron Black's website (for VERY reasonable prices btw, especially considering the depth of knowledge and history they have as a reader, wow). He calls on time, no chitchat, keeps it super professional, neutral and boundaried. I am usually offered a choice of decks and he sends a photo of the spread so you can follow along. Also he keeps the reading to time, in a really skillful way. And of course he leaves space where you can ask questions. Kindof a sidebar, but if you have never considered a phone reading as an option: I have found that I really enjoy and appreciate (and honestly might actually prefer) getting a reading over the phone - I can be in my own space, sit at my altar etc. For me, I can be a little more distracted or ungrounded when I'm in public - when I get a phone reading I can just drop in and afterwards do some journaling and thinking and be quiet if I need to... and just kindof digest the divination, which I think helps me to integrate it. There are so many witch/occult type stores in Salem, do yourself a favor and go to ANY other place than this one. I went there to get my son some gems, which he was really excited about. It seemed like a cool new place I could take him. The woman working there made the experience awful. She acted like she had never seen a toddler before in her life, and was hovering, cold and rude. One of the glass display cases had been left open, and my son was (under my direct supervision) looking through some of the rocks on display, when she rushed over and said to not touch anything without permission, and closed the case and locked it... no "can I help you"? or "any questions"?... just a frigid, angry vibe. I mentioned that the case had been left open by someone else (obviously her since it seemed to require a key), indicating that it was ok to browse. she didn't say a word in response. I had the distinct feeling she was watching us, and after a few minutes she came over to ask if I wanted her to "hold onto" the 4 rocks/gems my son had picked out, while we looked around... in a tone that suggested she was worried he would either do something nefarious with the gems, or we would steal them. Then when I was in the middle of making our purchase, my son was looking at this rock wind chime looking thing, being totally respectful and gentle. She took it right out of his hands. So If you like cold, uninviting shopkeepers that don't respect your children's personal space and snatch things out of their hands, by all means visit The Calderon Black! read more

It's disorganized. 1/3 of the store items not tagged properly. Customers calling saying they've been waiting weeks for their class orders...The communication is horrendous. No one is on the same page about things. My emails and follow ups ignored for a month and a half. Was promised "mentorship" and complementary classes that were never given. Owner is unfriendly, unsupportive, stand-offish and dismissive. Even her long time friends admit she can be intimidating. Why would you want to intimidate the people who want to support and help you? She takes herself *way* too seriously and doesn't live up to the ethics or ideals on how to treat workers at all. Moreover, she incessantly pressed me about Lilith and my relationship to her despite my being a Jewish woman who was taught about Lilith by a Hebrew Priestess ordained by a beloved Rabbi. And she belittled my knowledge about basic household herbs. I her to be narrow minded and very disrespectful. If you want to support a nice biz that actually lives up to their values, I highly recommend Hauswitch. I was so excited to serve the community, learn and grow, but this place crushed me to the point that it's going to take some time to recover. This place has a no touch policy which is understandable due to COVID, but after discussing these natural lodgestones with the employee, I went to grab the bag so I can purchase it and he goes "oh no you're not supposed to touch it".. However the lady tending the door seemed a little flat and heavily pressed their Covid rules which seemed a bit extensive. They had a decent selection of items and even a tarot deck I was very tempted to get for a steal ($25), but I ended up passing on. HARD PASS. Horrible experience. Bad bad energy from the moment we had to knock on the door to request entry. There were 3 of us(sisters, visiting together) and she said she wouldn't let us all come in, only 2 of us, which doesn't make any sense- not a single other person was in the store(no surprise) and we had all been sharing space together anyway, with recent covid tests, vaccinations, masks, gloves, sanitizer, the whole 9 yards. On August 4th, I was visiting Salem and made a purchase at the Cauldron Black. An employee rang me out and overcharged me $59.99 +tax ($66.74) by charging me for two of the same book. I didn't realize it at first, as he gave no paper receipt and hadn't told me my total, as we were engaged in conversation. I noticed about an hour later, when I checked the email receipt he sent me. I immediately called, as I live 8 hours away. I was told that only the manager could issue a refund and to send her an email. I immediately sent an email to the one they provided. I sent another on 8/6 and another 8/15. No answer so I called the shop 8/18, and they advised to send another email and they would follow up with her. 8/21 same thing, call and told to email. 5 emails and 3 calls later and the owner Jacqui Allouise Roberge finally emailed me back on 8/26, 22 days after the incident and initial email and call. She said she had been out of town and would be processing my refund the next day, 8/27, and that it would take 3-5 business days to clear, putting it on 9/2 at the latest. On 9/5, still not receiving it, I emailed her, stating so. No reply. Emailed 9/9. It is 9/12, 39 days, 7 emails, 3 calls, and a BBB review later. I've been more than patient. I've begged them to please just handle it, as now I will need to cancel my bank card to get my money back, which I really did not want to do. After reading other reviews on how employees are treated and how so many have had similar issues as myself, I took to leaving reviews of this unethical business. read more

After ordering a black soapstone scrying dish from their website, they took over a month to ship the product and only after I inquired about the item through e-mail. The item arrived a number of days later completely shattered after being placed loosely in a small cardboard box not appropriate for the item's size. It had no adequate padding. The box itself was not smashed, indicating poor packaging was the problem. I wrote an e-mail with pictures, called three times and left messages, resent the e-mail, and after three weeks have not received any reply or refund. Horrible and unethical business practices. The store itself is fine - it has your usual occult products, with some Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian elements that I was actually interested in as it's rare to see that in the area (I'm an initiate and practitioner, so I had questions about a couple of the displays). I think it's best if this shop puts all of their products behind or under plexiglass. I understand being overly cautious (trust me, I really do - I work in the health & wellness industry), but the current flow really doesn't lend itself to a great experience for anyone involved. They should also consider adding a hand sanitizing station at the front and offer gloves to customers after they thoroughly sanitize (that way, you can ensure even if they do touch something, they're not transmitting anything and you won't have to quarantine products or tell people to leave). I encourage the shop to rethink the policy, or adjust the way they go about enforcing it. Or even just be a bit more understanding that if someone picks up a product, they're not doing it maliciously - especially not the first time. It creates this really awkward, uncomfortable, unnecessary, and unrealistic experience. I understand running a small business is a challenge all on its own, but there are better solutions for providing an optimal employee and customer experience during these times. I literally would've been happy to sanitize and wear gloves, or see products behind plexiglass. That would've been 100x better than the experience we had. My trip to Salem was a wonderful experience except for stopping here. Someone who is always cautious of Covid, I understand protocols and requests so when I stopped and they asked for me to wear a mask, then also use sanitizer on my hands. I said OK. Then I went in because I had, a mission to find Tarot cards and a book I found those and she asked to hold that behind the register. Of course! Then I walked over to the incense and I couldn't smell it through the mask and the plastic so I took a corner of my mask off to smell, and she jumped up and said you have to leave right now. I thought she was kidding, but she said no you were told when you got in the front door you were not to remove the mask. It was not a nice experience. It's not what you say as much as how you say it and she said it as poorly as anyone could possibly do. I sure don't remember anybody telling me at the front door that I was not supposed to remove the mask for any reason. And the way I was treated was like worse than if I was stealing. We knocked to be allowed in. There were people in the store and the sign clearly said "Open", but no one came to the door, which was locked. We knocked again and waited. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE!!! My two girlfriends and I were just about to leave Salem after a wonderful birthday weekend when I spotted this shop across the wharf. I pointed it out with my girlfriends and we wandered over and boy am I glad did! This shop has an awesome vibe and even more awesome women working there. Jacqui and Noelle were such a delight to talk to as they have a lot of knowledge and have fantastic personalities. I have gone to other shops in Salem over the many years I have visited and a few of them do not make you feel welcome. In fact, I have felt judged as soon as I've walked in. This is definitely being NOT the case at The Cauldron Black. We walked in and immediately felt welcome! The girls were very friendly and personable. The inventory in the store is ideal as it is not overcrowded but also has a wonderful selection of jewelry, statues, posters, T-shirts, etc. There was a particular ring that I fell in love with but was too big and Jacqui said that she could order me the same ring in a different size and have it shipped to my house. How awesome is that!? All in all, we had a fantastic experience at the shop! I already can't wait to go back to Salem to visit these two lovely ladies again! read more

IMO the best witch shop in town! Yes they do have a good selection of occult goods, but what I really appreciate is the breadth of knowledge and welcoming attitude of the staff. For years I have gone to various shops in Salem, and unfortunately I was often ignored or not treated well. At the Cauldron Black, the staff is really inclusive and welcome all who enter. Just go in for the weirdest experience of your life.. We tried to open the door and it was locked. The girl came to the door looking confused as to why we were trying to come in..? She told us to back up so she could explain "all the rules" .. Basically dont touch, dont look, dont breathe or you'll be kicked out.. Only 4 people to the store. This one-star review is for online ordering. I visited this store last year when I was in Salem and thought it was great. I loved the incense sticks that I purchased there. Recently, I decided to order more of the same incense sticks that I got last year on their website. Received a confirmation email when the order was placed but never received any notification as to whether or not the order was shipped or a tracking number. I emailed customer service....nothing. Tried calling...nothing. Left a Facebook message...Nothing. It's been over a week and I still haven't received my order, even though it was supposed to arrive within 5-7 business days. I went into this store and was amazed by the products they had. The no touch policy was a little much to me, especially since choosing the right crystals and stones requires to feel the energy they give off. My friend found a beautiful pendent and asked the worker if they had any chains for that specific pendent. The worker showed nylon and regular chains. She chose the nylon and we left. Roughly an hour later we came back, and If I could give a negative amount of stars I would. We went back because the chain did not fit the pendent even though the worker said it would. When we asked her if we could get a new chain she said all sales are final. We completely understand that all sales are final, but she was the one who suggested the product. We asked if we could get any sort of discount towards a new one, or even just help us try to put the chain on the pendent. She said there was no possible way because we had already touched the chain and it couldn't be sanitized. We were very upset, and then to top it all of she slammed the door in our faces when we asked if there was anything she could possible do. I will not be retuning and I would never suggest this store to anyone because of the way we were treated. read more
