I researched and learned that they put down #1 grade red oak. The house has select grade (higher) WHITE OAK. And the floor was poorly laid with H joints everywhere. The president John took no responsibility. He accused me of lying by way of wanting a free floor. He kept trying to convince me the entire house was red oak (I went the extra mile and had it chemically tested. It's white oak). John stated that it was "awfully funny that I suddenly knew so much about floors" (of course once I saw something was wrong I wanted to understand what that was). John proceeded to rip a chunk out the corner of the living room floor for testing, as opposed to the closet where I asked him to remove it. See photo. Outrageous (for photos see google review) We took a HUGE LOSS on this floor. John REFUSED to remove the floor they installed! We had to pay another company to clean up this mess. It set us behind by MONTHS as post-covid construction is booming and it was difficult to obtain the correct wood at that time. Summery: wrong species of wood, wrong grade floor, layed over my old subfloor but charged for removal and replacement of subfloor, poorly layed down. Refused to remove the floor. Accused me of laying despite all evidence presented to him. I regret not suing this company, something I have never done. But we just did not have the mental energy in the middle of this remodel to take on a court case. *Update through replacement process we discovered they did NOT take out and replace the existing subfloor - which they charged me for. They put the floor in over my old subfloor. See photos on my Google review.

Enter Jeff Mahedy and Affordable Floors in New Windsor, NY. Jeff came to the house, gave us a very reasonable price and assured us that it wouldn't be that bad...and he was right. On the day the work started, Marcio did a great job of taping up just about everything and putting up plastic that kept a great deal of the dust down and after the sanding and stripping, did a fantastic job of staining and putting polyurethane on the floors. The floors look better than new and we couldn't be happier. They are smooth, the finish is excellent and the value of our house just went up! I would highly recommend Affordable Floors, and they are family owned for over 30 years. Their service and quality of workmanship are excellent. If you have to do this messy job, let Affordable Floors do it for you!

Steve has gone out of his way to ensure that we have the materials and supplies we need, at times even sacrificing his personal time to meet our needs. Tanner's installation skills are terrific and even the third party installers Steve has recommended have been a joy to work with.

We went to Carpets Plus ColorTILE in Oneonta because I was referred to them by the Valinge company…read morewhich makes Woodura. That product was out of our budget, but we welcomed the opportunity to spend our money at a smaller business instead of Home Depot or online discounter. We were told to ask for Steve specifically, and he seemed to be the owner or manager. We went in to talk with him on Friday, and he was very eager to help us find something that would work for our entire home (new construction). I asked about engineered bamboo first (after the Woodura), but he told me it wasn't really "green" because of the glues. I replied that it was GreenGuard certified, and we didn't want vinyl because of the off-gassing. "Vinyl doesn't off-gas," he said, which is just a lie. Or maybe it's ignorance, I don't know. Anyway, I said NO, and that we were looking for something not petroleum-based. He shifted gears and started bringing out engineered woods, then some pressed-paper laminate (which, again, we did not want, just didn't look durable). Steve asked me about colors and materials, and our budget. I told him a figure actually more than we would spend at one of the big stores, but like I said, it's important to us that we support more local and family-owned businesses. We're trying to be good Americans, you know? It's hard making a living. He made some calls, trying to contact some distributors about specials he gets. Anyway, my spouse had an unexpected phone call come in, so while he stepped away, I tried talking baseball with Steve. He was wearing a Yankees shirt, but I asked if he'd seen Ohtani's big 50-50 game. "I hate him. I don't watch him." I asked why, but mostly the reply was that Steve just hated him. I took a guess and asked if it was because Ohtani was from another country. "No, I'm not a racist!" I clarified that I didn't mean because of race, because there are people of different races in THIS country, just that Ohtani is not from the U.S. "You know the have to send a big chunk of the money they make here back to Japan!" Well, yeah, but we have to pay income taxes, too, or we're supposed to, anyway. Finally, I said, "You gotta admit, the man has talent." Steve said, rather angrily, that Ohtani should have been thrown out of baseball for gambling. (FYI, Ohtani was cleared by multiple investigations; the money was stolen from him by his close associate & translator. Some of the evidence was phone calls to the bank, recorded by the bank, lying, saying he [the translator] was Ohtani and he wanted money transferred to a different account.) But Steve was not interested in evidence, because Pete Rose, who himself was caught red-handed gambling on *his own team while he was managing*, had been thrown out. "Pete Rose was the best player ever in the game." Okay. "Come on, I don't want to argue about baseball. I just wondered what you thought." I asked about tile for the bathroom, and Steve showed me some, but no talk of prices. I don't know how we got back to baseball, but I said that my spouse and I had chosen a team that we really liked, not either of the teams in our geographical area (Mets or Yankees). We have enjoyed watching the Cleveland Guardians for a few years now. "You mean the Indians...I believe that teams should keep the names they have." (I did not mention that most teams have gone through multiple name changes.) "Like the Redskins." "But that name is really racist." "No it's not, it's like the [he named local tribal nation]. Redskins and Indians isn't offensive." I didn't think fast enough to say that it's not Steve's skin that people named their sports team after, so he didn't get a say. But what I did say was, "Look, I'm really starting to change my mind about wanting to give you our business," AND HE KEPT GOING. We backed toward the door, and he seemed to take enjoyment out of kind of herding us out with his angry white-man spew. So I handed him back his business card and said, "Yeah, we're done here." And we left.

Seeing that float tanks were the way to clean these rugs, I finally found Jafri Rugs in Albany, about two hours away. The picked up my rugs, did their magic, and the suggested repairs of new side binding and fringe {the fringe on my 75 year old Oriental was like a bad comb-over, with some of the weaving coming apart} were worth it, the Oriental is luxurious and soft and gorgeous. I am seeing colors in it I never saw before. After getting them back and walking on them with bare feet - the wool braided rugs are SO soft and my feet love them. Even the dog has ceased to jump on the couch and now lies on the braided rug. Not scratchy and dried like how they were when I received them. I swear each rug was ten pounds lighter. I am indebted forever for these experts saving my grandmother's and mother's hand braided and cherished rugs. Even though I was far away, they picked them up and dropped them off. I did have to wait a bit, but realistically I had sat on these things for years trying to find a solution, so why get cranky asking someone for a two week turnaround? Besides, I had already tried getting one of the rungs cleaned by an "antique rug cleaners" expert and I still had dirty heavy scratchy rugs. It was the holidays and they wanted to make the trip back when they had a few more clients up my way. This made sense, and it was worth the wait. Don't hesitate calling them, forget the cost, fall in love with your treasured family rugs and consider the cost as you are working with rug artisans. Pay their worth and stop thinking in Walmart Rug mode. Recycle, and Re-use. Stop throwing good rugs away. An aside, Humza and the staff who picked up and delivered the rugs are pros at making you feel like you are their favorite customer, genuinely. Customer Service was beyond expectations wonderful. Thanks for giving me back my cherished family heirlooms, better than how I received them. Beautiful and talented work, they are the poets of fine rugs.
