The Canvas Cafe, Virginia City NV
Bruce K.

Breakfast choices in Virginia City on an early weekday morning were limited but the Canvas Cafe got 'er done. I was not the only person in here but it didn't get very busy during my time. The same young lady was making coffee, taking orders, cooking and running food. She also ran the register. Not a problem as it didn't really get too busy. I had an omelet which was a little over done. Not great but good enough. This isn't a fancy restaurant and I didn't need fancy today. After clearing plates, I sat with laptops for an hour or so while Virginia City woke up so I could look around. My waitress kept coffee refilled and didn't mind me sitting in the corner and using their Internet for a while. [Round number review 17700 overall - 46 in Nevada - 1221 of 2022.]

Biscuts and gravy were the best I have ever had!

Brats & Eggs at The Canvas Cafe

We were meeting out-of-town family in VC on Friday, and we arrived early. Hungry. We stumbled upon The Canvas Cafe. Open tables were available, despite an event going on in the city, so we stopped in for breakfast. OMG I'm So glad we did! The food was absolutely DELICIOUS! Look at the pics. This may well be one of the best spinach (veggie) Benedict's that I've ever had. The English muffin was perfect (not soggy) and the hollandaise sauce was homemade, light and just amazingly tasty. Seriously, check out the pics. It all tasted just as good as it looks. The restaurant is cute and vc funky. Definitely worth a trip up the hill, from wherever you're coming from.

Quirky little local spot..... Food is good but not great. Atmosphere is nutty as nutty can be, but I love that type of thing. Have to say I became obsessed with their little piggy salt and petter shaker. The food.... Less obsessed not still filled my belly. Services was good. Being new to this town, o can't wait to checked out all the local spots.

Ordered the blank canvas and wish I had gotten an empty canvas. Cooked grapes, undercooked potatoes and extremely tough beef with arugula... I'm not sure what the idea was but this was a fail. Positive notes... the server was kind and the atmosphere is fun and quirky

As far as esthetics and atmosphere... I love this place! It's got a fun and funky vibe. The service is friendly but not very attentive. I ordered eggs Benedict with my eggs over hard... the whole meal was barely cooked. It had soft English muffins, running eggs and barely cooked bacon instead of ham! My husband ordered an omelet and it somehow got missed on the order, so it came out appropriately 30 min later! The waitress only offered 10% off the bill which was basically nothing for the bad meal and the other meal being so much later! On a positive note a band was playing which helped the overall experience.

Classic Benedict

Beware!!!! We went for breakfast on Sunday. The Server that we had was very nice, they didn't have a table when we walked in so she took our number, and said it would be about 40 min and she'd text when the table was ready. She did send a text, and it was much sooner than she had said. This part was lovely. We ordered the Classic Benedict's, Bloody Mary, and Corned beef Hash and Eggs. The food was mediocre at best, the Hollandaise sauce was really thin almost translucent and not creamy looking, the eggs were hard, and potatoes on the side were under cooked. But this was not the alarming part..., it was the fact that someone came out of the back... maybe a cook not really sure. She had a jar of Mayonnaise that she was dipping a spoon into eating spoon fulls and re-dipping that spoon in the jar! Do they use this for food they prepare for guests? And the other server that was there, had a bottle of vodka and she was drinking it straight from the bottle, again do they use this to make drinks for guests.. literally made my stomach turn.. since we had already eaten. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

It was on the opposite side of town but worth the walk . Seating inside was small & busy so we sat outside - picnic tables were set up. Greeted by our sever - who was wearing a cameo (red) onesie (should have taken a picture)...She took our drink & breakfast order. Drinks & food arrived timely. Super impressed with glassware & drinks were tasty. Steak Eggs Benedict was yummy, well priced and a great choice. The normal Eggs Benedict (bacon) was also tasty. We will be heading back to Virginia City with family & friends & will definitely be stopping by

Awful food! It came out cold. Wait staff have an attitude beyond belief. Keep your hard earned dollar and go eat up the street.

Its a big event so we understood that a server couldnt seat us or take our order at the table. My other half and daughter had a seat in the room beside the balcony and I went to the bar to order. They bartender wasnt busy with customers but was talking with another staff member. I sat at the bar for 10 min when another customer walked up. I thought it was strange how he was helped immediately. I sat there for another minute confused. Then I decided it would be better not to use my money at this establishment. I want to mention that one of the staff members that was wiping tables and setting out condiments was very nice but at the bar for some reason I was invisible. Side note: I was reluctant to visit Virginia city because of recent events that happened there to another person of my skin tone. I try to give places a benefit of a doubt and not judge a whole place from one incident. I can say not feeling welcome does contribute to my concern as a mother and a person of color. I want to caution others to make your own judgements but please stay safe. If you dont feel welcome please do not cause a scene the best you can do is not use your money at places like this one and write a review. Eventually people will see the truth and hopefully the establishment and associates will reevaluate how they choose to do business. Just my suggestion. Take care and stay safe

We started with the sage and cheddar biscuits, which were wonderful, and the glazed pork belly with chili crunch with toasted cashews - the combo of the nuts and pork was really delicious. We then had the Niman Ranch pork chop and grilled steak frites. Pork chop came with creamy polenta, mushrooms, and a blueberry glaze - I'm hungry just writing about all this. The chop was grilled to perfection - moist (no pink meat) and nicely charred for the flavor. The glaze is a hint of sweetness and the creamy polenta is a winner. The mushrooms are an excellent compliment. The grilled steak was also cooked to perfection - medium rare. The flat iron steak is such a great cut of meat. The fries in duck fat were very good. For dessert, we had a chocolate masterpiece. The meal was well priced considering the location and the time of year. And while the meal was special, it was the service that really made the experience special. While being utterly professional, the staff is also friendly and on top of it. I regret I didn't ask the hostess her name, but she was excellent - filled our water glasses without being asked once, and asked if we would like clean utensils after our appetizers. Our server was also excellent. I'd have more pictures usually, but we were so hungry after a LONG day at Sand Harbor, we forgot!

There was some confusion about the heat lamps apparently, we were told they would not be turning them on for us, we said that was fine, we hadn't asked for them to be on. Then the server dnd her trainee came over and asked if we wanted the heat lamps on. Um, ok, so they do work? They had signs up saying no dogs as well which we were wondering about since it seemed like it would be a nice outdoor area to have a well behaved fur companion. We started with the cheddar biscuits- we felt they were average at best. Wish we had skipped them, not worth the calories for sure. My hubby loved his angus burger and his duck fat steak fries with truffle aioli. Hubby asked if they had any hot sauce- we were told they made it in house. He liked it enough to ask if they sell it. They do/ we bought a small bottle for $7.50 I had the conchiglie which I also really enjoyed. Our favorite part of the meal was dessert- we shared a scoop of the salted caramel gelato. We sat outdoors on a moderately cool evening, but the heaters kept us comfortable enough. We even had a view of the lake, although it was across a bustling RT 28. We started with a couple of IPAs and "Yes Chef" spritzes, accompanied by some wonderful focaccia ($14). The food arrived somewhat randomly, but we didn't mind since we were all sharing. One of our group, a vegetarian, started with a delicious and substantial Little Gem salad, followed quickly by the pimento croquettes. They were delicious, although a little confusing because there were two different versions: one filled with pimento chili sauce and the other with fried green tomatoes, a little frisée, and chili sauce. Both were very good, but I wasn't quite sure why they weren't all the same. The vegetarian in our party also ordered the charred stone fruit and generously shared it with the rest of us. Delicious. The hit of the evening was the wild boar ragout with gigante beans, tomatoes, leeks, and roasted focaccia toast. It was beautifully seasoned and wonderfully tender--perfect for dipping that delicious bread. My wife loved her pork belly over mac 'n' cheese. Last was my "Royal with Cheese" burger, made with Wagyu beef and a "perfect egg" on a brioche bun. Since I'm not a fan of runny eggs, I asked if the egg could be fried hard. Our waiter--who, by the way, was a foodie and an absolute delight--said he'd see what he could do. Well, while I respect a chef who sticks to a recipe he considers unique, I was a little unprepared for the compromise: a cup on the side containing a near-raw egg! He could have simply given me a fried egg on the side instead. Minus that quibble, the hamburger was very good, although I'm not convinced Wagyu beef adds much to a hamburger. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will definitely return on our next visit.ur next visit.
