I visited The Witch's Cottage, also known as the Gallows Hill Museum & Theatre, for a show in October and enjoyed every minute of my experience. The staff knows exactly how to run its shows, with large crowds trembling over the cobblestone steps outside this charming Salem edifice. The show was just perfect in length, especially for kids, and gave its viewers interesting facts about Salem's history, including the witch trials. The Witch's Cottage is perfect not only because it has a great staff and a fun show, but also because it is nicely and conveniently located within walking distance of a lot of attractions in Salem. Following the show, my family and I purchased t-shirts in the Museum and headed out onto the old and classic streets of Salem. It made our venture to this Museum even more worthwhile as we were able to know exactly what occurred centuries before in the streets we padded down. If you are in for a good show--put on by an outstanding cast and staff--and want to learn about an interesting, old town in New England, then you definitely have to visit The Witch's Cottage!!

With all things COVID we need activities which we can socially distance from each other. It's…read moredifficult finding things to do, and fortunately there are some pastimes which had gone by the wayside, making a return because of COVID. We've been coming to the Topsfield Drive-in for the past couple of weeks now, and it's been a great option for going out. There are concession stands set up, masks are required when you are outside your vehicle. It's been nice to go out for a movie. This week was Beetlejuice. For some reason I'm watching it now, and it's a really weird plot line for a movie, but I remember not questioning it as a kid. I remember the gags and the running jokes with Delia's sculptures, Barbara having a literal zipper on her mouth. Holy crap that is young Alec Baldwin and I didn't recognize him. Beetlejuice needs to marry Lydia, an adolescent for whatever reason? It just struck me last night that this movie probably wouldn't be made in today's day and age. I still love it though, however I'm starting to notice that I question more things as I get older. So, last week was actually Jumanji: The Next Level. So it's nice because there is a nice spread of movies to watch. The concession stand is fairgrounds prices, which is okay but who can be mad over $7 deep fried oreos, they're delicious and where else you gonna get this? They do offer radios for rent at $5 a pop, or to jump your car for $5 if your car dies while listening to the radio for the movie. We've run off the battery for a movie and have been fine. I would caution not to rely on your battery unless it was replaced recently, and just buy a cheap radio to watch the film.

They work hard at making sure that there are programs for everyone, young and old. Our family has participated in so many---Girl Scouts, Caroling & Cocoa, Middle School Dances, Ski Bradford, the Santa Breakfast, yoga, sewing classes and dance. That is just some of what we have had a chance to do. There are so many more great programs offered. I give the CH of HW and everyone that works there 5 stars!

So it was exciting to have a recent and currently rare chance to return to the venue for the first time in at least 10 years, if not more. I do follow their social media programming in the interim and am pleased that the cinema has managed to soldier on through the more challenging recent years. The triplex layout was exactly the same as I remember, though it was a surprise that the bathrooms did not seem to have been updated. The more personal, less chain-like touch is evident throughout the space with handwritten film titles and a general welcome to linger vibe. The film I saw featured in the "screening room" which I had not visited before. Seating was OK with the look up at a slightly sharper angle than I would have liked. Sound and picture quality was excellent. The trailers before the film were individually cultivated (a welcome additional more "personal" touch) and highlighted upcoming one-off programming the cinema will be offering. Keep going strong, Cinema Salem!
