Many of my friends ask for some well kept secrets of cafes out in the suburbs. Sadly the Butchers Block is not a kept secret because it is always crowded, and you will be most certainly told to wait for a table. However, it is crowded for a reason. As this is one of the better cafes in the area. The coffee here is good and strong. They generally serve All press beans, but ask for the single origin it is better and worth the extra money. But the coffee is not the pull of this place but rather the food. The menu is small but good. There is the pulled pork burger, which is brilliant or the Peri Peri chicken wrap - with the freshest chicken I have ever had at a cafe. If you are going to eat here, please try the tiramisu! It comes in a cup and is more authentic then I have ever had. Yep, it is not supposed to be a cake, but rather more of a trifle. And this is fantastic. Also, if you are into pastries, then try to the almond croissant, heavy but good. Overall, this is a must stop if you are in the area. Not sure if I would travel out of my way, but if you are in the region, come on down! read more

A girlfriend suggested this place. And I invited another friend along. Thought I'd better check with Yelpers. Wow, they gave it quite a bouquet of compliments. Let's hope that it lives up to expectation! We arrived 10.30 & needed to wait for a table to become available. I'd flagged with the others that we should have brunch here & not just a coffee, so we were seated accordingly. We were led to an airy table in the back area which was bordered on 2 sides with brick walls that housed a lush herb garden and I think some lemon trees. The service was fabulous. Rocco and his team were friendly, helpful & let you feel that they were there to make your dining experience as wonderful as they could. When the tea, latte & coffee came to the table we discovered there had been a minor mixup with my coffee order & that was swiftly fixed. And then a tasting plate of beetroot salad appeared as a way of 'apologizing for the coffee mixup' Where on this planet does that happen? Usually there's a sigh, a tolling of eyes & even a challenge to take a polygraph test if an order doesn't match what the waiter has brought!!! I'm as happy as, & we haven't even got to our food! The menu was a delight! What to choose, caus they all sound great???? One omelette, one Benedict with bacon, & my Pulled Pork Benedict. Everything looked great, but mine was Heavenly!!! I chose the best!!! I'm the winner!!!! One friend is going back for lunch tomorrow with her loved ones. That's what she said. I really enjoyed the food on offer, particularly the burger and the fatoush salad. The food is reasonably priced in terms of portion sizes. Most of the waitstaff are attentive and helpful, without being too overbearing. I'd probably recommend to one of your waiters that calling women "hun" repeatedly (when they've physically baulked at your use of the term) is probably not a well considered choice. I'm sure repeat customers love a bit of over familiarity, but you need to get people back into the restaurant in order to achieve this feat. read more

i have been to this place three times now and each time has been underwhelming, considering the great reviews it has. although the service was good and the staff were friendly, we waited a really long time for the waitstaff to come over to see if we were ready to order, so we eventually had to call someone over (was about 15 minutes). the food was really nice but really was not worth the price. the eggs benedict was $23 and was a very small portion and only had 1 piece of bread. i finished the meal unsatisfied. overall, butchers block has a nice ambience and seating areas, the staff are friendly, but is ultimately quite underwhelming. read more

Wahroonga. Truly one of the most beautiful suburbs in Sydney, but its not really on the cutting edge of the food scene. Speaking of cutting edge, we went to this place for lunch. Its not cutting edge, but it is great, its a superb renovation of an old butchery with selectively retained treasures like...I'll give you one guess. The space is amazing, super slick. The Wahroonga matrons look a bit out of place, but it doesn't stop them from getting at least 50% of the seats. It should be full of younger people - its that kind of place. The food is very good, burgers, sliders, pasta. The servings are huge, consider sharing plates if you don't have the whole afternoon spare because your body will shut down for at least two hours to direct all its energy to digestion. Hopefully this place will shake the other places round here out of their complacency. The other places are just plain normal, and ordinary. This is a very welcome "cut above". We got told "the Block" (wanted to be the first to nickname it, maybe "Butchers"?) are waiting for a licence and will then open as a bar/ tapas joint - if so we will go as soon as we can. Check it out, its a very cool spot and its in a beautiful part of Sydney. read more

I am honestly astounded by this place. The food might be slightly pricey but it will be the best cafe fare you've ever had. I had their amazing Caesar Salad, but I hear the pie is killer and the specials including steak sandwich and risotto are great. The decor is flawless and there is a great courtyard space out the back which is bright and airy. But more than anything else, I was impressed by the staff at the Butcher's Block. Every single member of their teal was amazing, courteous and obliging. Service was quick, and not a sign of stress despite a packed restaurant and a line out the door of patiently waiting (and hungry) customers. If you're up North go here. If you're not up North, make the trip! read more

I've been coming to The Butcher's Block regularly since they opened. I can safely say this place has it nailed! Their food is exceptional every time, personal favourites are the one pan bacon/eggs and the ricotta hotcakes, if you're up for something a bit sweeter. Pricey but easily worth it. The fit out of the place is gorgeous, I love to sit out the back surrounded by their herb garden. But the real clincher is the staff - the service is phenomenal! I've yet to experience a place that's as welcoming as this, but without crowding your space while you enjoy your meal. Only potential con is that the coffee can be hit and miss... but they will happily make it again if it's not quite right, and it's easily the best in Wahroonga anyway! read more

The food here is delicious. Delightful ambiance and great decor. Would recommend the pancakes for breakfast or any of the burgers for lunch. Extremely disappointing. We are regulars, went for dinner tonight, 10 January. Meals took over an hour to be served. The burgers were soggy and disgusting, the spaghetti was $35 for a lousy bowl, it did not have any Balmian bugs but only 5 pippis. The maitre de was defensive and would not accept feedback. Promised a complimentary dessert platter, never turned up. When I went to pay the bill, she then offered one free dessert only. The waiters were understanding and helpful. The Butchers Block makes living on the north shore bearable for the under-40s. It is the most glam cafe north of Neutral Bay and the coffee is as good as any in the city. The staff are energetic and delightful and the service they provide is faultless. In terms of food, I have tried the truffle scrambled eggs, the ricotta hotcakes with banana and orange glaze, the lemon curd muffin and the quinoa toast - all were delicious...my favourite being the hotcakes. I will be back to sample more of the menu and the lush desserts ASAP. It can be hard to get a table amongst the locals as this cafe is consistently buzzing, but it's well worth the short wait. I will definitely miss this gem when I return home to Amsterdam. read more

I've been regularly coming here with friends over the past year. Ever since it's opened, it's always been constantly busy, and there's no wonder as to why. The place has great service and amazing food! It's a bit on the pricey side when considering the normal price of cafe food, but the service is super polite and efficient, especially considering the place is ALWAYS full. And the food is exceptional so there's nothing I can complain about! You need to try the chicken burgers! Oh and their sweet potato chips - I'm in love. read more

Dropped in midweek and the place was packed! If I'm in the area, I'll usually go to Danes or Kokoh. However, butcher's has been on my to visit list for awhile... Ambience: Very trendy, intercity feel. Big fan of the wooden tables and butcher shop features around the walls. Nice low hanging lights too. It was a shame the herb garden courtyard was full as I would have liked to sit there. Food: Shared the meatball sliders with a friend. Excellent presentation but more attention should have been paid to the flavour. It was by no means terrible, just less than what I expected. The chips were odd. Drinks: The waitress asked me how my meal was and I honestly told her it looked nice but was a little ordinary. Yet somehow she convinced me to try a pear and cinnamon smoothie, that it was her favourite and there was nothing ordinary about that! It was DELICIOUS and I'm glad she took the time to ensure we were having fun. My friend tried the snickers shake and loved that too. Service: Excellent service. From the moment I was seated to the moment I left with my takeaway coffee. The team are extremely friendly and attentive and each member looks like they walked out of a magazine. Hiring policy definitely has a looks bias. My friend was quite taken with the Italian guy who seated her and I was equally as impressed with the brunette girl who served me. Not worthy it. Went tonight to The Butcher Block (11/23/13) with a great friend because we always like Groupons to wonder how great restaurants are. Not a great experience. When we entered, the bartender told us the "host will be with you". Did not offer us a drink. When we were seated, the server did not acknowledge us until he took the other table next to us their order. Luckily, we were not looking for great service (which never happened). We ordered and asked for bread. I think that is the way they trap you. 1. Ordered a salad which had to much lemon dressing on it. 2. Ordered the special spaghetti and meatball entrée and tasted bland. No distinct flavor or special ingredients. Just meatballs spaghetti with a sauce. ($14.00) 3. Ordered Ravioli entrée ($16.00) Was chewing and dry. I returned the my entrée because I was dissatisfied. Never got a apology from the Manager. Not a great place to eat. You can make your food at home for the prices that they charge and have a better meal that is tasty with great company and pay less. read more

I came here to meet some girlfriends for coffee and it seems that because all we ordered was coffee and some toast we weren't able to stay longer than an hour. The manager had an eye on us the whole time and gave us our bill before we'd asked. Then had the cheek to get one of the young waitresses to ask us to leave. We ended up standing on the street outside to continue our conversation because we were rushed! So rude and very unprofessional! Won't go back there. read more
