I previously complained that this joint didn't take plastic (that has since changed); I've complained that after three cars deep in the drive-thru, one is at risk of being rear-ended on the busy road. I have never given a bad mark to the food -- until now. Indeed, the prices here are higher than the world's most famous hamburger chain, which is located a couple blocks east. Yet, the dogs here are salty (non-beef) wursts that are packed in cheap buns. When a joint offers such cheap fare on the $1.99 specials menu on a Saturday (mustard or ketchup dogs), I feel a bit taken. The chili, on my recent visit, was not the same as I remember. Though they might be using the same recipe they bought from the former owners, it tasted sweeter. The kraut was the same. The Polish dog was nothing like it used to be (and not in a good way). It is truly my wish that Hot Dog Express continues to thrive. However, after a recent visit, I've decided to get my hot dog fix elsewhere.

I had plans on Frisco but then found out there was another Portillo's down the street from me. Walking in and looking at all of the decor and set up were reminiscent of Portillo's in Chicago but with a Texas spin. The order counter is still there but added a few self order kiosks. The pick up window is down from the order counter and you wait for your number to be called. The Chicago dog, Maxwell St. polish sausage and the Italian beef tasted exactly as I remembered: delicious, juicy meat, tasty sausage and dogs were all top notch. This is THE place in Dallas and Frisco for that authentic Chicago food made famous all over America.

Left to go pick more food up while they were making it. Picked the food up and brought it home when I discovered they gave me a regular brat in a bun with no sauce or anything else in the box. It looked exactly like the one that was on the grill when I opened the box, which isn't a big deal if it was prepared to the order as currywust. I get you prep for orders I guess when it's busy. I don't think that was the case for my visit. I can't say for certain it was the same food since I left, but based on how it was received, I'll lean towards it wasn't prepared to order. Your mileage may vary. This part is reviewing what I received. It was definitely nowhere as good as the last time I had their normal brat and was dry. They cut the brat a lot, which is fine if the brat stays juicy normally but they killed it with this one and cooked it too long I guess, but it was so dry. I don't remember any of the full brats that I've ordered in the past being prepared like this but I'm not the chef. I only ended up eating a couple bites before throwing it away. I should have checked the box, but I assumed with no other orders and lots of time standing around chit chatting that they would get the only order correct. I felt a little awkward walking up, waiting and waiting, and then having to try to get their attention to pick the order up after obviously being there 5 minutes before to place the order without anyone else waiting in line to get the food. I wish I had some of the curry sauce or onions or something to add some moisture. I think they just didn't care or wanted to mess with someone. I was super friendly and thankful for their help at the time. Disappointed to say the least as the currywurst is what I wanted. I definitely think something happened when they moved from the entrance on the first floor. This used to be a delicious, busy, and reliable favorite. Not so much anymore. What a shame.

It smelled good and it tasted good as well. The bratwurst was so juicy that I was kinda scared that the sauces were gonna go everywhere. The brat is actually longer/ more than I expected, so I'm kinda happy. One definitely won't make you full however - so prep for that. Food kinda made my coworker a little hungry as well haha. Maybe if I'm in the area next time, I'll try one of their other brats... I see a curry one haha. A good place to pick and try some of their foods as a snack.
