Ok, so I admit I've been sleeping on the Burger Joint for the past few years. I'm apt to flinch at paying over $10 for a burger, but today I decided to treat myself. I decided on The Backwood burger from their Signature Burgers menu with a side of curly fries. After taking the first bite, I instantly knew this was something I'd be more than willing to throw my money at again and again. Welcome to the world of gourmet, locally-sourced burgers. "Wow" is truly an understatement. My burger was packed with so much flavor - the burger patty felt luxurious, almost like I was eating a steak. The onion rings and bacon in the burger had a satisfying crunchiness and sweetness that was accompanied by an amazing BBQ sauce. I have absolutely no complaints about the burger - eating it was a delightful experience. The curly fries were also good - a steady, basic accompaniment to the burger without too much flavor on their own. However, what the curly fries lacked in flavor they made up for in bulk. And honestly, I don't know what I would have done if the curly fries were as dressed up as my burger anyways...I probably would have lost my mind completely. I ordered my burger for takeout, so I can't speak to the indoor vibe of the restaurant. With the new normal in 2020 we are all finding ourselves living in - so got it to go - called in our order and the friendly order taker said it'll be ready in about 25 minutes, so I took a slow roll over to Arcata to grab our burgers to go... the togo box itself was almost worth the drive Fresh ingredients and produce are obvious when you take a look at your burger. My classic bacon cheeseburger was quite tasty and for a third pound burger was very filling. Fresh made in house buns with fresh lettuce, tomato and onions with a generous portion of bacon strips and then all covered in cheese. it was a very good burger. Ordered both styles of fries offered; the traditional hand cut fries and also curly fries - both are good and again generous portions, of the two the curly fries in my book edged out the hand cuts in flavor alone, both were crunchy golden brown with soft pillowy interiors and both again obviously made fresh. Lastly, this place offers Chaco Tacos as a dessert option these little fudge covered ice cream tacos are so good and cheap that its a shame not to grab yourself one or two while you're there. Definitely worth it. A good choice for burgers in Arcata thats a step above several burger joints in the area. Extremely expensive garbage. We used to go here per-pandemic, and this was our first visit in a few years. Sad to say the quality has take a steep decline while the prices had a huge increase. My husband's ($21!!!!) burger was wildly over-cooked; he ordered a fried egg to go on top, and the egg was hard cooked through - no runny yoke. He said McDonald's makes a better burger. The "onion ring" on top was an uncooked-looking onion with a separate ring of soggy breading. I had a veggie corn dog, which arrived burnt, and a Cesar side salad. The salad was made entirely of the wasted white ends of romaine -- not even a green piece to be found! And the lettuce had "rust" all over it. They're not even using fresh produce. The only good points were the milkshake and the curly fries; everything else was cooked poorly and/or contained shady ingredients. Do yourself a favor -- go literally anywhere else. Other reviews had me hyped about this place but it turned out to be disappointing. I ordered the Juicy Lucy and my husband ordered the the Backwoods burger. Ordered an extra side of curly fries. We showed up around 5:25 or so and the place wasn't busy at all. Waited 30 minutes for the burgers and they came out cold/barely warm. Seems like they sat around in the back for quite a while before they made it out to us (which at 30 minutes we were already feeling perturbed about service). If the food had come out hot I would feel better. The burgers themselves both were burnt on the bottom and my burger was more of a ball than a burger. The buns LOOK good but are nearly impossible to eat and have a meh taste about them. Flavor was underwhelming. I hope this place takes constructive criticism and puts it to work because it could be a great spot otherwise. read more

If you are a fan of a spicy fried chicken sando like I am, then you have to try their Red Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich. I've had at least 10 and every single time, they are on point. A lot of places give you a thin piece of chicken. Not these folks. The piece is like an inch thick. Perfectly fried. Soft perfect pretzel-style bun. Blue cheese dressing. Franks Red Hot and lettuce, tomato, and red onion. yum. I got mine with a generous portion of sweet potato fries-thick cut. Oh so good. Highly recommend. 5 stars. Don't eat this burger!....if you're wearing all white, on a first date, trying to impress someone with your elegant table manner. Otherwise, dig in! They offer the best burger in the county and every food item is either made on site or sourced locally. I haven't had a decent experience in years. Today, we ordered onion rings. It took about a 1/2 hour for 7 rings for $8. Yeah, read that again. Also extra ketchup costs extra... why? Before this, many months back I ordered a hamburger and fries and got a raw hamburger and cold fries. I only realized when I got home, which took 5 minutes, that I received substandard food. I called, the server provided a refund, and I accepted. This was the worst experience I've had here ... I've been here before and it was actually pretty good ... prices were a little high but not unreasonable for the quality of food that I had gotten previous times here , service was better previous times as well... I've worked in the food industry a lot before , and I've never seen a kitchen close down before closing time ... but hey , whatever‍ then after I paid for my food , the cashier tells me that there was a technical issue and my ticket never printed in the kitchen so they never made my food but they're making it right now .. okay cool, I get it , that's happened to me before ... now as I'm sitting there with my friend waiting for our food , we can see in the kitchen and we see them making our food with no gloves on while they're handling dishes they had just dropped on the floor etc , we see the floor is filthy and covered in food and other debris , it honestly just looked a complete mess. Then when we finally got our food , my friend suggested we check to make sure we have everything , I ordered 2 kids meals ,that are supposed to come with a slider and a small fry each,and 2 orders of like loaded fries ... we only got 2 sliders and the 2 loaded fries ... when I asked for my order to be fixed , the cashier told me their fryers are already off(mind you , it's not 8 yet) and that she'll just give me a refund ... whatever at least I got my money back , so we take it and go ... now 50$ is what I paid ... getting refunded 16$ for the two kids meals I didn't get . Our loaded fries were so over cooked they were literally inedible .. the cheese had those thick slimy chunks that processed nacho cheese gets when it's been sitting for a minute and you scrape the bits off the sides ... for food that was literally just made , it was cold so fast ... the only reason I'm giving any stars at all is kuzz they gave me a refund and the burgers we did get for the kids meals were actually pretty good in taste . Android pay works here. Nice vibe, very instagramy/ hipster trendy on the inside. Place was clean, and you can see them making your food. Both indoor and outdoor eating. I appreciated the hot sauce collection they had tucked into the hallway wall on our way out to the patio area. The meat burger was good but the veggie (fun guy) was disgusting. It was a sloppy, soggy, double onion mess. Do NOT order the fun guy unless you like a mess. The pups REALLY like it here. They have water bowls and a patio for them. The backwoods was good, thick and flavorful but also messy and difficult to eat. Once you picked it up you could not put it down. They cleared the table before I was done, which isn't a plus especially when it was completely over priced. I make a much better meat and mushroom burger at home. I very rarely write bad reviews- I've worked in the food service world for over 10 years and it truly takes a lot to bother me. But the other day, a friend and I popped in to The Burger Joint after being intoxicated by the wonderful smell wafting down the street from its doors. When we got there, it was pretty empty, and our hopes were high. I placed my order of a large waffle fry and a small onion ring- I was pleased that the cashier even went to ask the kitchen if their onion rings are vegan for me. He was very nice overall! But that's when things started going downhill. Our fries sat out on the counter for over 25 minutes. It was the only order up and there's a sign that says not to touch food up there but to ask the cashier to get it for you. But the cashier was busy taking an order and talking to a small group and I didn't want to interrupt (that's on me I know but I have trouble interjecting and asking for service). We patiently waited and hoped that the rest of our order was coming and maybe that's why they didn't bring us our food. What came out was just a small fry. Not the large fry and small onion ring I ordered... at this point we had been there for 35 minutes and I honestly didn't have it in me to ask for the rest of my order and have to wait an equal amount of time. 35 minutes for a small fry that was cold af? I was confused. The cashier didn't seem to notice... we were one of only two groups in the restaurant at the time and we watched the two cooks in the back take their break while our fries sat on that dang counter. So we couldn't ask them for the fries either. We had to sit there watching the cooks enjoy their delicious meal while our fries got colder and colder. It was agony! Haha Anyway, i must say the fries were definitely delicious! I think most things here are, but I don't think they're worth the enormous price and sub par customer service. Absolute garbage. I ordered their loaded fries based on the picture and description on their Facebook page. Apparently I accidentally ordered my loaded fries from Wish because the sad, burnt, stale, anemic fries in the bottom picture are what I received. A sprinkling of burnt cheese, barely any sour cream, the equivalent of maybe one strip of bacon, and not a single green onion in sight. I also waited 45 minutes for this half-assed abomination. My sister worked here for a short time and ultimately quit because of how shady the owners are. They never had her formally fill out paperwork when she was hired . She quit because she felt that something was off . They did not pay her for the time she worked there . And when she tried to collect her check they pretended they didn't know who she was. They think they can get away with this because there is no paper trail. I can imagine that they treat all their employees this way. There's no way that this is a one time thing. I've been trying this spot for years, time and time again when I attempt to call my order in on Fridays there is no answer. I'll try 3 times to call with no answer and then when I go there to order the place is literally empty. There should be no reason for them to not answer their phone during lunch time on Fridays. Man, I've had the Juicy Lucy, the Classic and their Fried Chicken sandwich, nothing compares to the Backwood Burger. That burger is heaven in a bun. I had that and their curly fries, one word, AMAZING. No joke. The patty is local and cooked to ultimate perfection, the onion ring is big and crispy, the bacon is perfect and the bbq sauce they use is sweet and adds a perfect symmetry to the smoky savory accents. It's delicious and I highly recommend to anyone that likes these kind of burgers. It's been in my head since I ate it the other night. I'll definitely be getting another one. He had Mind Haze (hazy beer) with The Backwood burger and I had Maid Marion (marion berry cider) with The Fun Guy portobello mushroom "burger". We sat out front since we had our pooch. There's a fair amount of seating for small groups. You order inside, then seat yourselves in/outside; they'll bring your food to you. That is the only accommodation. When you're finished, there's a small bussing station just to the side of the patio entrance. Nice staff, very good food, and luckily for us, good drinks (limited selection). Pricing is alright. For a party of three ( with above mentioned items plus a kids slider and small fries) it was $48 before a tip. read more

This is my first ever review. I am so sad. All I wanted was a burger. That was my only requirement. What they gave me was the saddest lump of coal Santa ever shit out of his ass. The atmosphere was fine. The service was fine, except they forgot my drink. When I got the lemonade, it was amazing! I think after this I will go across the street to the grocery store and pay the same price for an entire jug. These people should be ashamed. It was as if they drained the cow of all its bodily fluids before plopping it on the grill. There was no juice, no moisture. I felt like I was eating a sponge. The fries were subpar. Not the worst fries I've ever had, but then again, the day my dog died wasn't the worst day of my entire life. That is to say, the fries were like the day my dog died. Casually strolled in at lunchtime. We we're greeted by a super friendly staff member who was quick to help us out with recommendations. I got the veggie burger with lettuce wrap (more on that later) and the classic burger for the bf. We both loved the hand cut fries. The BUNS ARE HAND ROLLED AND BAKED IN HOUSE! So disappointed that my Google search sent looking for this off the beaten path, for a fancy Burger joint. After finally located it , in a Warehouse area of town, it had a all metal storefront. I was surprised food was being sold there. My husband noticed the patio was open and a couple of tables had people eating there meal. We waited outside at the table set up to order. Fries were burnt, cool and unedible--can't believe any decent cook would put those on a plate. Burger patty was small and too thick, sandwich about 3-4 inches stacked and small around and messy to eat. Ate about 1/2 the sandwich and threw the rest away. Paid $13 + $1 tip, what a rip off. These places think they can serve this crap and you just pay for it to keep them going during COVID. I won't be returning.
