I visited this restaurant with my family and we had a bad experience. My sister ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and the meat was horrible. It was hard and chewy and was almost like a muscle. I however got the chicken dinner and mine wasn't good either. I was supposed to get a salad with it and I never got that, my fries were really bland, and my chicken didn't have any seasoning as well as the fries. It was also very cramped in there and is not good for big parties. Even though the food wasn't great our waitress was really nice and did well with all of our orders. read more

A great place for a beer and burger. They are known for the size and variety of the burgers made here, with that said the fried asparagus is great and the fish and chips very good. The staff is always friendly and work at a frenetic pace keeping everyone in food and drink. Locals patronize this establishment so expect the staff and customers to engage in detail conversations. Pretty much the only place in the area that was open when we needed dinner. Staff was nice and food was average. I understand the place is old and might have some history.... but it didn't appear the building was being kept up properly. There was a large piece of decorative ceiling coverage about ready to fall from about 10 feet from where we were sitting. I really like the Brown Bear but not the one in Shelby, don't like the ambient. I like to go to the one in pent water. Which is about 10 min. North of Shelby. Unless I'm ordering to go, maybe. P.S. In Shelby, I find the meat of their so famous "Bear Burger" tasteless. No flavor. Just a pond of meat. read more

Few family went here from recommendations however as soon as I walked in, loud 1/2 drunk men sitting so close to door hard to get in. Waitress gets 1 of three drink orders wrong, my bacon cheeseburger is to be well done meat/bacon, w/ cheese, mustard and lettuce but comes with 1/2 cooked bacon, mayo and tomato (which I'm allergic to) so I send it back and comes back 1/2 correct because there's no lettuce so I let it go. Start eating burger and it has no taste to it, can't even tell if they put salt/pepper on it. Bun looks toasted on grill but no butter while grilling it to add to flavor. All around tasteless experience. Yuk!! Absolutely did not like this place and will not waste my money there again. read more

The Brown Bear has WAFFLE FRIES, people! That's reason enough to stop here. Their burgers are pretty great, too, though. If you're up for a challenge, order a Bear Burger. One whole pound of beef, with a specially made bun to fit the monstrous burger. I've ordered it once to share with the husband, just because I had to see this massive thing in person. Good service. People were friendly. Food was OK. Had the fish and chips. The fish was definitely out of a box. Not hand breaded. Coleslaw tasted a little gamy. French fries were from a bag. All and all it was OK. Drinks were good. I would go back, just order something different. read more

Spent the day at the state park and needed a decent meal on the way home. It was late almost ten o'clock. Stopped at this little bar and grill in the blink and you missed it town of Shelby, Michigan. I ordered the prime rib dip while my husband and daughter order the steak special (med rare and rare). All surpassed our expectations. The best steak we had in a long time. I tried my husband's steak and it says something for me when I didn't need any ketchup or steak sauce. My husband even tipped the cook, which I've never seen him do before. Stopped in after a girls soccer game and way more than I expected. Promise was a great server, burgers were up there with the best I've had and the crew acted like a team with food service and clean up! I have heard the burgers are good but I have to be 100% honest and say I have never tried one! I grew up in Shelby and have eaten at the Bear so many times that I couldn't begin to estimate the actual number. I have to put a pitch in for the gourmet subs. This is my go-to, hasn't changed in the 20+ years that I have been eating them. All of the appetizers are good too, especially when paired with the ranch for dipping. I have been a devoted fan of the food and people of the Brown Bear for many years. During vacation season the place is as busy as it can get. The off season is the best time to visit, it's more of a laid back home town bar with GREAT FOOD and GREAT PEOPLE! The service was great. The fried chicken was okay. The ladies bathroom was disgusting. My vantage point from our table was of the working kitchen...food all over the floor. When I mentioned it to our waitress she spoke to the cooks and then they closed the bottom of the Dutch door so you couldn't see the mess instead of cleaning it up. We will not be back. read more
