Needed a place to eat and found the Broken Spoke! The place next door had an hour wait, so we checked out the Broken Spoke. The wait was about 15-20 minutes - so much better of a wait time! I like the theme and vibe of the place - the play on bikes and name of the restaurant is perfect. Decor is bike themed but not overly done. Rustic and laid back. Our waitress was excellent - very friendly and attentive. All staff were wearing masks. Good drink menu in addition to food. A lot of small plate options but the portion sizes of the small plates could feed at least 2-4 people. I went with sweet potato fries and steak tender bites - delicious! The dipping sauces for the fries had three different options - sweet/savory, loved trying each one. The sweet potato fries were not mushy and had a good crunch. The steak was cooked to perfection - I asked for medium and I got medium! Everyone seemed happy with their food. Restrooms were downstairs. Nice dining option in the city - only con there was no outdoor seating. Picking up on social media - looks like this place used to be Huron St. Pub & Grill not sure if it was a re-branding or new owners. Went for dinner and the place had a great vibe, chill music, good food, and amazing service. Our waitress was super nice, helpful, and attentive. The Po' Boy was our favorite, definitely would go back again. Update: Went for dinner, still a great atmosphere and great service. You know whwn you're in a tourist town and you eat at a restaurant right in the main downtown area amd afterwards you think, "that place must only stay in business because of its location"? Well, that is not the case with this place. We stopped in for a late lunch after a 3-mile kayak tour and we somehow managed to get a table immediately. They were extremely busy, but our server was efficient and attentive. Everything was clean and our drinks and food were excellent. I had the bruschetta checken and i was sorely tempted to lick my plate to get every bit of it. We also bought a souvenir for my brother: a shirt that says, "we support pour decisions". read more

I am giving an extra half star for our attentive server, that would have been taken away for other reasons. The table was sticky, which I hate. Spouse didn't care, and I was boxed in, sitting between him and the wall. My beer, on tap, seemed somewhat flat, as did spouse's cider. The interior of the place is too dark for my tastes, I wonder just how clean a place is when I can't see inside well. On to the food, which was tasty. Spouse had a cheeseburger with fixings that was done but still juicy. On the server's recommendation I had the shaved beef with cheese and onions. I don't think the menu mentioned au jus, but she brought it and it made for an excellent sandwich. Both my sweet potato fries and husband's tater tots were good. Still, given my reservations about the table and dark atmosphere, I don't think we'll return. read more

I was with two coworkers on a day trip to the island. We got to the island around 1230 so we decided to grab something to eat before we rented a couple bicycles. We landed here for no special reason. The server tried to sit us at a table 5ft from the front door when there were plenty of other open tables. That seemed silly so I asked to sit at a high top up against the wall. She kind of huffed and puffed at me but she gave in. I must have upset her because she didn't bring us menus for about 10 min. I got the whitefish poboy with fries as did one other in the group. The third guy got a burger. My sandwich didn't stand out but it wasn't bad. There didn't seem to be much fish on it but it was loaded with onions and lettuce. The other guy that ordered it felt the same way. The guy that got the burger said "it's a burger". I'm not sure when I'll be back on the island. I'll probably give a different place a try if I do make it back. read more

We must've arrived on Memorial Day before anyone on the island really got going, so there was no wait and the service was really fast. It got busier as we ate, but our service remained quick. My boyfriend and I ordered the breakfast sandwich with house potatoes and the "famous" tater bowl. Both were good, but really nothing special or particularly memorable. The tater bowl was rich but well seasoned and the bread on the sandwich was really good and tasted fresh. Wouldn't be our first choice to revisit on the island, but overall a decent breakfast when you want to get your day started. read more

Crowded & busy day. Everyone was friendly and efficient. All wait times were very reasonable. We have 2 special dietary boys (PKU) and they adjusted like rock stars. The boys hounded me to make sure I have a good review so all thumbs up from the 15 & 14 yr olds. The owner came by and was terrific. Mood of the place is recently updated friendly, industrial. Very cool. Small but not cramped. I'm a beer snob from Rochester Hills, the beers were excellent. My wife & I were pleasantly surprised. Food was solid. Choose this place! read more

This place is so cute inside and the food was delicious! I ordered the famous tater bowl and it didn't disappoint! Although it's very heavy (tots, gravy, biscuits, eggs, etc) it filled me up for a good bike ride around the island. They followed all the Covid precautions and I felt safe eating there. The place is clean and cute and high quality service and food! Highly recommend and great for breakfast when we got there on the 9:30 ferry ride :) ENJOY! read more

It's my birthday!! We decided to take a quick trip to Macinac Island since I have never been! Yes. I know, it's crazy. I have lived in Michigan my entire life and have yet to see so much of this beautiful state. This will not stand! So we hopped in the car and drove on up! What a great place. I wish he had longer to explore! This was the first spot we came across when we got off the boat. Now there one thing to know about Macinaw this time of year.... Midge swarms!!! Omg it was awful! The flying insects do not bite but they get all over you!! We had to keep sunglasses on and our masks because they would get in your eyes and mouth. They were THAT bad. I am guessing this is like our fish fly season in south eastern Michigan. Anyway, we were so stressed out that we stopped at the first place we saw and ordered a beer. It was actually a perfect choice. This was more of a dive bar, but the locals seemed to enjoy it and the bartender was very helpful. She suggested many places to try, and where we should eat dinner. This is a sister bar to the brewery on the mainland. The beer was cold and the bartender was warm and friendly. We took her advice, made a list, and off we went. read more

Not to much open so we decided to try this pub. We ordered grill cheese with tomato soup. It was a sandwich with three thin slices of cheese there were not melted on white toasted bread. The tomato should was supposed to have fete and basil. It just had chunks of canned tomatoes. Go the Sea biscuit way better. read more

During the current Covid environment, we have to be understanding of the difficulties food establishments are having . That, in conjunction with the island costs were taken into consideration but this meal was just not acceptable. I asked the waitress nicely about the hush puppies, which were obviously burnt, hoping she we notice the fish was also burnt. She said sometimes they look like that, "did you try them"? Yes, as a matter of fact I did and they are burnt. She brought me some fresh ones; freshly burnt! Hard to believe they left the kitchen never mind making it to our table. For $18.00, no one should have to eat burnt fish that wasn't even on par with a McDonalds Filet-o-Fish. 3 stars? Well my fiancée got the fish tacos and she said they were good. read more

We ended up at this restaurant because all of the other restaurants were full. For those who have been to the island, it's tough to find a table anywhere on a busy day without a wait. We got the whitefish dip for an appetizer. Good flavor and portion. Split a chicken sandwich for entree. Kids meals were both really good. Waitress was friendly. Owner came over and had a really nice conversation with me. If you see this place on the island, definitely stop. Really good! read more

Extremely disappointing. Five people for breakfast and my wife and I had the pancakes w/out bacon. Three small, flat, rubbery, obviously frozen pancakes and a plastic cup of watered down syrup. $12. And they didn't adjust the price for 'no meat'. Come on guys, I know it's been a tough 14 months, but no one likes to feel taken advantage of. How hard is this? What do a couple of fresh flapjacks on the griddle cost you... $.50? Too bad. We would have all gone back several times if it had been different. The food was good, but the way they decide their gratuity was awful!! We split into teams of 3 but they still considered us a group of 9. Any group of 6 or more they aut add gratuity, 20% actually. Not only did they add gratuity to every bill of ours, they decided that people pay 20%??? not a good way to decide people's tip for them, but if it was supposed to be 6 or more, why would you add it to all of our bills? I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. My husband, two young toddlers, and I were able to find a table at this restaurant during the busy lunch hour. We were placed at the back near the kitchen door because of our kids. Upon sitting at the table, I noted that all employees had poor attitudes as no one was as smiling, they quickly rushed from one table to another, were not checking on their customers during meals, and basically rolled their eyes at any inconvenience. My husband and I were having difficulties with our toddlers. It was close to their nap times and we had just completed a very long bike ride, so they were exhausted and hungry. Our youngest kept letting out a loud shriek here and there. We tried to control it as best we could and apologized to those around us, but were shocked when a waitress, who wasn't even waiting on us, approached our table and yelled at my husband and I. While rolling her eyes, she told us to take our kids outside the next time they screamed and quickly walked away before we could say anything. We were completely shocked as this has never happened to us before. Anyone who has ever had children this young would understand how difficult it is to control them in a restaurant environment especially when they are tired and hungry. In addition to the poor service, the food was terrible. My husband ordered the fish and chips while I ordered the chicken caprese salad sandwich. His fish was dry and flavorless, and my chicken was also very dry. I ended up only taking two bites out of it. At the end of our visit, my husband asked to speak with the manager, who was not available, so we spoke with the next person in charge. We apologized for our children's behavior, but also voiced how we found the waitress' attitude to be very disrespectful. He apologized, but defended the waitress by saying he could hear the baby in the back (mind you we were sitting next to the kitchen). Overall, it was a horrible restaurant experience and we will not be returning. read more

This experience was a disappointment. My husband ordered the chicken pot pie. When it arrived, it was unlike any pot pie we had seen before. It had the usual filling on the plate, topped with 3 biscuits. He said it was ok, nothing special. I had ordered a Caesar salad and my fault I had not asked for the dressing on the side as it came soaked in dressing. The real negative, though, was the waitress, who looked like she wanted to be anywhere but The Broken Spoke. Never a smile or pleasant greeting, nor was she even the most efficient. This, combined with the very average food, made it a place that we won't likely visit again. There are too many other great places to eat on the island. read more

Food was good but pricey. Customer service and treatment by manager was horrible. We were rushed through our meal on New Years Eve and after 1 hour while we were eating our desert, we were told by the host/manager that they would be turning over our table in 10 minutes. Large selection of craft beer, they offered flights, we were able to sample several. All the beers were good, stout, lager, ale, IPA. Everything was very good. Environment was uniquely decorated in an industrial vibe, and was very clean. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable of the brews. Wonderful place to visit. read more
