Walking in, the atmosphere has great potential and the server was A+ and so sweet to us. It's a nice quiet intimate place for a couple to come in on a date, maybe have a drink and talk. I believe one of the owners, or a manager was checking on guests randomly, which is always a nice thing to see however... The food is EXPENSIVE. 1/3 pound burger for $18?? Seriously? That's barely over the size of a McDonalds hamburger. A few items for $40ish and I couldn't justify spending it, if I was still going to be hungry. We kept looking around at what others were eating, and nothing appeared to be much food in front of others at all. Most of the items shown on their menu through Google, are not on their limited menu either. We were looking forward to trying it for someplace different, but it wasn't worth the money to us. We were hungry, and realized this wasn't the place to go if you were, so we nicely paid for our drinks, tipped our sweet server and quietly left. We ended up going next door to Mulligans. Again -it has a great atmosphere, the service seems to be excellent, and is a very nice place, but not for dinner unfortunately. read more

Bad start from when we entered the restaurant. Staff seemed irritated we were there which may have been because there were multiple dirty tables she didn't feel like cleaning. We sat on folding chairs at the table. Our waitress carried our drinks by the rim of the glass. We asked for a straw so our mouth wasn't where the drinks were carried and we were brought unwrapped straws that were too short for the glass and carried in the waitresses hand. Out of the taco Tuesday special by 7:00. They were out of iced tea as well. There's also a very odd long mirror in the women's bathroom giving you a unique view of yourself while using the restroom. We did not have the 4.7 star experience that we expected from other reviews. I will say the flat iron steak and the shrimp pasta was good. Our other items were just okay. read more

However, it wasn't really warm and was probably because it took over an hour after we ordered to get us our meals. I get really hangry so this was frustrating and bummed me out. We were looking for something light so we ordered a half Michigan salad, Brussels sprouts, a wedge salad and some bread. Stopped in for a quick dinner. It's fairly small inside. They have three meals with whitefish available. I got the whitefish tacos and enjoyed them. Everything was fresh. Not a great experience here. We had high hopes but 3 out of the 6 of us were disappointed in our meals. The service was excellent and the ambience was great but the food needs improvement. Two of us ordered meals that the spice level was unbearable yet nothing in the menu description indicated it would be spicy. If you order the sausage and pepper entree or the beef braciole be very aware they are very spicy dishes. We were also excited to try the mushroom risotto but it was not good, it was very dry and the rice was undercooked. Gordon Ramsey would be yelling profanities at that risotto. Based on all the positive reviews I am hoping this was maybe an off night. Perhaps if we come back we will have a better experience and I can give them a better review. read more

We went for a quiet dinner looking for great food. After we were seated we weren't sure if we were in a bar or a restaurant. Very drunk and very loud patrons yelling between tables. It looked like one of the employees was involved going back and forth to tables. Our waiter was great in attention and explanation. We ordered several small plates. One was the portobello mushrooms. They were deep fried and just pretty much tasteless. We had Brussels sprouts which were great. But we also had the mushroom Rissota which was very good but looked like they were running out because it was served on a small plate completely flat as if spread on with a butter knife. Owners are nice, I happened to meet them at the bar. Bartender was very knowledgeable and nice. He took time to recommend what wine to have that paired well with my meal and it was great. Hands-down favorite restaurant in Cheboygan! They are CLOSED from Jan 1 through Mid/late April 2022 for the season. But, we went Dec 30, 2021 and had an amazing time. Thirtsy Thrusday meant half-off bottles of wine. All of them. Even the expensive ones! I could not believe we got a such an awesome bottle of wine for less than I have seen at the big stores. But the food... WOWZERS. They have it figured out. It's a small place with a small kitchen, but a HUGE flavor profile. - Mushrooms Roja? Menu doesn't describe it like it really is, but it is amazing! - Steak came with just a little rub and some sauce on the side under the fingerling potatoes and perfectly cooked carrots - Squash soup. This surprised me. A lot of times it's all cream and sugar at other places, but this is actually squash-y. SO GOOD - they do have homemade desserts most of the time, but since this was the second to last night of the year before they close for four months, they were out. I have some respect for that, too. Don't just serve me anything you can whip up, stick to your guns. We are semi-locals and we've been here a few times. It's always great to be in here. The staff and the patrons are all friendly: No making fun of or ignoring those they don't recognize as we have found in a few of the small places around the area. Live music consisted of a really good solo cover artist (a few different guitars, yuke, and some cut background tracks) and the sound level was prefect. you could still hold a conversation even though the place is tiny. I wish I could give this place 1 million stars! The food is always always always phenomenal. The waitstaff always very friendly. The drinks are always perfect. I love that they change the menu up. The atmosphere is just awesome. We are locals so we have the opportunity to eat here often. While they serve Tapas, my husband and I never leave feeling like we're hungry or didn't get enough. It's always the perfect amount. And at times, they have the option to upsize the steak if you wish. Now about the steak- You will not find a better steak anywhere in the county, maybe even state. I have brought several friends and family members here and each had the steak and every time has said that was the best steak they have ever had. Fabulous new dining option in Northern Michigan! Creative menu. Nice atmosphere and style, not the overly cute nautical decor you sometimes see. The bisque was great. Visiting from Los Angeles to see my mother, this was an excellent representation of Cheboygan's dining scene. Our server, Mike, was attentive, friendly, and charming, and the food was satisfying across the board. The sautéed shrimp were the standout of the evening, perfectly cooked, garlicky, and with a delicious jus to mop up with the provided bread. All four small plates we had were great: Caesar Salad, Shrimp, Pan Seared Trout, and Arancini. One note of constructive criticism: although the Pan Seared Trout was perfectly cooked and tasty, it was over-salted, obscuring the yuzu and citrus. Still enjoyable though, with tender flesh and crispy skin. Dessert, a wild blueberry crisp with ice cream, was delicious, and extremely generously portioned. Not too sweet (my number one complaint with desserts is excessive, cloying sweetness), the wild blueberries were nicely tart and flavorful. The next time I am visiting Cheboygan (likely this summer) I will be sure to return. read more

This little "barstro" (a portmanteau of bar/bistro) is my new favorite spot in Cheboygan. FOOD The big three favorites, for me, right now are the Shrimp Tacos, Red Sea Salad, and a glass of their Pinotage (yet another portmanteau: Pinot noir/Hermitage). That said, the whole menu is fantastic. STAFF The chef and sous chef put great thought and care into their recipes, and into the preparation and presentation of everything I order. It's not uncommon for them to come to the front of the house and ask me about the meal. The bartender is friendly, helpful, funny, ebullient, and efficient. I usually pop in for lunch and eat at the bar, so I'm on her territory. Her conversation elevates the experience. The hostess and servers are all friendly and energetic. It's a refreshing sight, considering the battalions of cocky, jaded, lazy and generally clueless waitstaff who erode the dining experience for thousands of regular restaurant-goers throughout America. (Sorry for the rant, but it has to be said.) I am very glad their food is excellent, but I'd continue eating there just for the great people. Every visit and every meal have been a joy. ATMOSPHERE This spring and summer, I watched this humble little building transform into something very special. The outside dining is a big plus when the weather is good. Inside, the theme is nautical ... hence the name. Great music plays at a comfortable level. It's warm and cozy. The bar itself is stunning. It depicts the inland waterway and the islands of the Straits of Mackinac. It was created by a Michigan craftsman who used copper, heat, and other treatments to develop an artistic representation of northern Michigan's watery parts. We absolutely loved the charm of the Tappas stile meal. The Mushroom dish was amazing. We ordered one just to go. The drink pours were generous and the service was outstanding. Mike, our waiter was attentive but not overly so. My wife is very health conscious, so the farm to table stile meal was perfect. Definitely an A for effort and friendly service. Honestly if this were in a big city I'd give it 1 star but for Cheboygan it's fine. The meatballs appeared to be frozen based on the texture, oh and maybe because of the ice cold center. The shrimp just had a light dusting and then fried. Nothing really complex or creative in any of the dishes. It's like they had an idea for a tapas restaurant but then decided to only source their food from a Sysco truck. I suggest everyone try it when in town. Just keep your expectations reasonable and drink heavily. You'll have a great time! read more
