I stayed for a few days with friends at Broadkill Beach. What a special place, nestled along the bay off Route 16 in Milton, DE! While there, my friends and I walked along the beach, marveled at the horseshoe crabs, and enjoyed the cactus gardens and sweet honeysuckle-lined road. During our walks, we would stop by the Broadkill Store for coffee, soda, facial wipes, and to satisfy my Necco candy wafers "fix." While it's a typical combined bait/tackle and convenience store (i.e. it's got an eclectic mix of emergency household items, snacks, beach toys, Broadkill Beach branded merch, etc.), it also has a kitchen and griddle where delicious breakfast foods, sandwiches and fries are served up. They open early - perfect for the early riser and angler setting off for high tide. The staff are friendly and conversational. They were excited about the busy Memorial Day weekend they experienced and the forthcoming summer season where customers from nationwide come to Broadkill Beach. Love the small neighborhood store vibe with the variety of merch for many needs!

Great donuts, and deli style food. Funky place-but good, it sure beat some of those places along the road before you reach the beach.

But I was able to find an entree here that was delicious, filling and fairly (depending on your choice of sides) healthful. First, the crabs. The place is crowded. We waited about 30 minutes outside (alternative is the inside bar) and got a table. We ordered our meals and within three minutes, my partner had a tray of 6 nice-size blue crabs in front of them. The sides (the AYCE comes with fries, hush puppies and cole slaw) came a few minutes later. My entree - grilled chicken breast with 2 sides - came a few minutes later. Two large moist breasts, fries, veggies (veggies add $2) and I ordered a third side - cole slaw for extra $2.95. If you are a non AYCE crab person like me, you understand the need to pace yourself during your meal - hence, the extra side. : ) I really enjoyed my meal and my partner the crabs. The service was exceptional - both water glasses and refilling those crab orders. My partner didn't have to ask for crab refills. Before they were done with one order, the server was ready with more to add to the platter. The server was very pleasant and seemed to know most of the customers in the place. There's an enthusiasm and positive vibe here that is really great. An excellent meal and overall good experience. And that's speaking as a non-crab person!

It took a few for minutes for our server to come to the table. She was not overly friendly but seemed to be okay. We ordered a Bacon Omelette with potatoes and wheat toast and a BLT breakfast sandwich. Food was out in a reasonable amount of time, brought by someone from the kitchen. The food was good, nothing great but decent. We did have a cinnamon roll and it was absolutely delicious. We never saw our server again, she never checked on us, and I would have liked some more tea and some more jelly. We waited about 2o minutes to get our bill after we were done, our plates neatly put together and sitting on the table and she never came to our table. We went up other her ask for our check and she told us to just pay at the cash register. So, all in all, not a great experience. I saw other waitresses who were attentive to their tables so I think it was just our waitress. I didn't see her around much so maybe she was doing something else, making coffee's or something. I think the fact that she did not want to bring our bill was the worst. With all the good options around I am not sure I will be retuning but it is worth a try to make your opinion.

This quickly became one of our fave dinner spots! They are middle of the road with gluten free options. It was very busy and loud, not something they can do much about. The servers are super busy but always attentive and that plus the food made us want to come back. Plus the decor is kind of fun to look at. They have both indoor and outdoor, it's too cold for outdoor right now but will try closer to Spring. Ordering Out/Experience 2 and 3: The few times I ordered out, my pizza was wrong and the "grilled onions" in my cheesesteak were actually just raw strips of onion. I hate raw onions so it was just gross for me. I would normally say it was a bad day but it happened twice in a row around the same time of day. I'm assuming the cook earlier in the day doesn't know what grilled means or doesn't care. In the evening it's always spot on! Experience 4: We're not needy customers and usually prefer to be left alone while we chat and enjoy our food. I think that's what made this visit beyond frustrating for us. We really liked this place and it was just a very chaotic experience. It just so happened that this experience occurred the day I was catching up on reviews. Our server was a mess. We were patient and kind assuring her that it was okay. They made my husband's order gluten free which we only ordered mine as such. Brought it back correct. No big deal. Then she tried to accuse us of being wrong, now that was annoying. After that, she did not bring our pizza even after we confirmed with her, because she asked, that it was NOT to go. She asked, we said no and stated that we wanted to eat our pizza there. Next thing we know, she boxed it up to go and dropped it off, with the check, after we mentioned we were still waiting to eat it. We left a $12 tip (a dollar less than 20% of our bill) because the waitress got multiple things wrong and blatantly ignored what we asked in a very simple order. Today we see she made the tip $30. We called, it's handled, it has kind of tainted this place for us though..

The cashier seemed a little frustrated, though it looked more like the stress of a long day than poor customer service. I placed a to go order, left a tip, and waited outside. My food was ready in about 20 to 25 minutes. I ordered the blackened scallops and the crawfish étouffée. The scallops were $13 and the portion was much smaller than I expected. More concerning, they had a strong ammonia smell and taste, which is a common sign of spoiled seafood. I ended up throwing them away. The crawfish étouffée looked promising at first. The roux had good color and a nice thick consistency. Unfortunately, after a few bites, I noticed the same ammonia taste in the crawfish. (Portion for this was a good amount) seems wasteful due to the ammonia taste. It is a shame because I wanted to like this place, and the étouffée showed some potential. Based on my experience, the quality of the seafood was a serious issue and made the meal disappointing. I hope the restaurant addresses its seafood handling and freshness.
